Here, let's separate this, and use them both. The coverage is brutal, Mayock is giving away the picks anyway, and the NFL is fucking everyone over by forcing commercial after commercial on people rather than announcing the picks. Sorry about the other thread. I didn't really think anyone would care about a trade announcement, guess that was wrong.

Some picks will look good in 5 years.  Some won't.

Goodell said today on ESPN that the TV Networks (this could be their own, but may be ESPN) told them to slow down on at least one occasion and hold up. Then Berman then proceeded to make fun of Goodell for being slow.

Which is ridiculous since it was a solid 20 minutes from when Eisen said "The Pats pick is in" until they actually announced it.

Wouldn't everyone be happier if the picks just appeared on a big screen?  The1) deciding the pick, 2)announcing it in the team "war room" 3) calling it to the draft table, 4)writing it down, 5)walking it to someone who 6) gives it to the commisioner who then 7)waits for a cue from the TV cameras and then 8)walks over and 9) reads it dramatically is a bit antiquted since the twittervers has the info at step 2 at the latest.

Until 1,3,4&5 happen, it's not an official pick. But yes, 7-9 could certainly be eliminated. They never would, because $$$, but there wouldn't be any negative downside I could see.

Or just have the gaggle of analyst cut themselves short whenever a pick is in and immediately have the commish announce them.  It might feel disjointed at times and the fan of a particular team might be disappointed to not immediately hear the "insight" but there are now approximately 80 billion places to get instance information about the guys being picked, how they fit with their new team, their background, etc...

Fans will be ok, if we don't get the 4 minutes of post pick discussion and the 4 minutes of pre-pick discussion for each and every draft pick.  There will always need to be commericals obviously and the human interest pieces to "sell" the high profile guys to the public, but the analysis is often trite or misleading and generally pointless.

They actually kind of stopped all this late in the first round on NFLN when the picks started coming in rapid fire. They sat there not really knowing what to do, since they were aware of who the pick was, but didn't want to start giving it away. Well, everyone except Mayock, who would give his thoughts on who would be drafted, and nailed them all! We basically just got commercial, pick...a few minutes of "uhhhs," "ummms," and Mayocks picks, then another commercial, followed by Roger sauntering out and announcing a pick. Rinse and repeat, until we were about 30 minutes behind.

I don't know it still felt like they were just talking for the sake of talking late into the draft.  I remember going off in the game thread somewhere about pick 26 when they were super backed up and Rich Eisen basically gave us a 3-4 minute verbal recap of the top 10 picks, the two trades and the general lack of trades.  I was guessing that maybe ESPN was doing an interview or a human interest piece during that time, but it was just a pointless 3-4 minutes on NFLN that just further delayed getting to the picks.

I remember a stretch where they talked on the main NFLN set about the picks then sent it outside to Chris Rose et al to do the exact same thing while the picks were coming in.  It was so frustrating.

#1 - Ban calling players in the first round (later round if you want to get an idea of a player etc. fine)
#2 - Stop dicking around, pick is in, walk to the podium
#3 - Announce Pick.
#4 - Profit?

The biggest problem with this is it doesn't allow the TV crews to dictate commercials and the draft will be shorter.

The biggest benefit is the TV show's aren't a joke and the draft will be shorter.

It was rather obvious they were stretching out the last pick until 11:30 come hell or high water.  The NFL Network draft show was scheduled 8-11:30 and of course the Pats pick was announced at approx 11:26.  I wonder what would have happened if all 32 teams picked one after another with no time between.  Would have left the NFL in an awkward position.

There's only one solution to all of this, and that's going to be that teams will have to take at least 5 minutes per pick from here on out. It's such an NFL thing I almost can't see it not happening.

Edit - In future first rounds, obviously, not today.

The NFL will shout it doesn't give teams time to trade picks. The real reason is they can't have a 3.5 hour show.

That's the issue. This is half-draft, half-TV show. Those who want it to run more smoothly have to look at it both ways. If the Saints make the 31st pick, the Pats are notified they are on the clock and they could send their card up immediately.

But TV needs to spend some time discussing picks 27-30, if not then what's the point of telecasting this at all?

Cutting the 10 minute time limit in half could only make this problem worse, as the talking heads attempt to give each player and team a shout-out.

The problem isn't really Twitter. The issue is those who leak picks. Regardless of how you structure the mechanics of the draft/TV show, there will be those who leak the details ahead of time and those who will post/publish what they find out.

They can work on making it a better TV experience for those who would rather find out w/o spoilers; but I don't think this is a problem that can be solved -- even if they were to go to the Oscars concept of placing the card into a sealed envelope.

The following team is notified immediately and they're on the clock. That's why it backs up 10-15 minutes when there's a quick pick and the pick is in forever

Do we really need 10 minutes on a guard just to do it? It's not like there isn't a ton of dead air, time filling as it is.

They can always go back and give time to a guy who deserves more love. A rapid fire of 3-4 picks is great tv. Think back to when the Vikings passed. It gives the show some pace and excitement.

The NFL wouldn't know anything about that though based on their constant commercial breaks, replays etc.

It was egregious last night with the video, to the point they were showing video clips of NFL players the draftee was being compared to. "This guy reminds me of Jeremy Maclin. Let's stop taking about the rookie and look at some clips of Maclin now."
