Mariners just traded Robbie Ray to the Giants for Mitch Haniger and Anthony DeSclafani, plus cash.

This has to clear the way for Seattle to sign Snell.

Sure, but what impact bats are even available? Of course, this could just be another salary dump in light of all of the shortfalls in money made off of their regional sports network.
They currently have a very strong rotation, probably the best in the American League with Castillo, Kirby, Gilbert, Miller and Woo. And now Descalfani too.

If they are short on financial resources, they shouldn't spend it on any more pitching.

Well, trading some of that young pitching could go a long way toward finding a good bat.

Also, as posted above, I didn't realize this is basically a wash money wise. So, good on DiPoto for getting out of the Ray contract, I guess.

Cash-neutral for 2024, but the M's do get out of paying Ray the $50M (real cash) due in 2025 and 2026. Haniger is owed $15.5M in 2025 so that's still a net savings of almost $35M going forward.
Both of them have player optouts after 2024, making this trade even more confusing.

Dumping Ray, a lefty with control problems who had a few great years, to make room for Snell seems kind wild to me.
I don't Snell is or has ever been The Plan for Seattle. I have no doubt his interest in playing there has been genuine, and I think it was a pretty solid gamble on his part for someone associated with him to pass that interest along to Mike Tirico - someone who (I don't know about the rest of you) I don't even really associate with baseball - instead of the usual Rosenthal/Heyman suspects in hopes of putting pressure on ownership to open the vault. But I don't think it was ever happening. Even now, after the trade, they go seven deep in starters, so I imagine they're done in that regard, even if they trade away someone like Woo or Hancock.

Really, the Ray contract was one of the worst things that could have happened to them since they so rarely indulge in that type of big deal. It was one of the few ones like that they gave out since Cano, and I'm sure the fact that he was such a disappointment isn't a strong point in favor of giving out another in the future. I'm pretty sure the Garver deal is the first multi-year FA contract Jerry D has given to a position player as the Seattle GM/PBOps. And it's only two years!

Cano was a disappointment in Seattle? He raked for them.

But yeah, the more I read about this trade it sounds like their offseason is basically over.

He had 4.5 good years in Seattle.
Problem was it was a 10 year deal. They were fortunate the Mets bailed them out of the last half.

Cano had a much better career than people give him credit for, of course the suspension and terrible years at the end pretty much ruined his reputation and HOF chances by close to 70 career bWAR, 2600+ career hits, 8x all star, 335 homers, .301 career average…wow. Were it not for COViD and his suspension, he probably gets to 3000.

And he made $260M+
