Josh McCown’s head coaching odds just plummeted.

"Easterby shoved a few in his time; now he appears to have been shoved in his turn by GM Nick Caserio, the latest fruit of Bill Belichick’s generally rotten tree to catch a McNair’s wandering eye."

Oof. "Generally rotten tree.." That is not high praise.

Glancing at that very tree, and considering only NFL head coaches with whom he directly worked (e.g. not counting Saban's tree as his), it's mixed.

Successes:
- Flores (Miami)
- Vrabel (Tennessee; only played, not coached, under Belichick)
- Daboll (Giants), so far

Fine, I guess:
- Crennel (Cleveland, Kansas City)
- O'Brien (Houston), from whom the Easterby business springs

Busts:
- Mangini (Jets, Cleveland)
- Schwartz (Detroit)
- Patricia (Detroit)
- Judge (Giants)

Arguable both ways:
- Saban (Miami)
- McDaniels (Denver, Las Vegas so far)

I think the worst thing you could say is that Belichick mentees have done well in the NFL at about the same rate as everyone else has done well in the NFL, which is not very high.

This guy seems like a TV evangelist who uses his force of personality and others' faith to rise to a level of authority and power he didn't remotely deserve. Imagine if Kraft had some unqualified Jewish guy making football decisions because of their shared faith?

Mangini is a bust? He was good with the Jets and undermined by an idiot owner in Cleveland. Yet Flores is a success. Ok.

That's some pretty good message boarding right there

Same with me and Steve Nash. I suspect I am higher ranked comparatively in the "Canadian basketball guys" vs "Born again Football guys" lists than Easterby.

I could get some of Steve's culture through.

'Like Kyrie, it buggers up the O, you dribble tooo much , eh."
"Sorry there KD, but since ya hurt yer leg 'gainst Tronna, far be it from me, you know, but maybe yuur days of guardin' the best wing, are you, know in the past eh. Just let that idea thaw out, eh?"
"Jeez, Ben yer backs not loose? the arena's too cold? Good thing yer not from Saskatoon, or you'd would even get the car going six months o' the year. When weather's like this we drink outside, there."
"Hey there fellas, when it gets chippy, we gotta meet chippy with chippy!"

This post brings great joy.

Aside from perhaps the word "dribble", you could more or less deliver any of those lines in skates to a junior team. Of course all Americans think that anyone with a Canadian accent has a decent wrist shot, so grain of salt...

So.. Flores wasn't undermined in Miami?
Mangini 33 and 47
Flores 24 and 25

Mangini had two over .500 seasons in five years.. Flores two in three. And it doesn't seem like he was going to be worse if he'd been allowed a next year.

edit: Mangini with the jets: 10-6, 4-12, 9-7.. it is pretty close to Flors with Miami 5-11, 10-6, 9-8.. but the order of records makes more sense with Flores if you're improving. Mangini 5-11 twice with the browns hurts him a lot.

No Tim Horton’s reference ? Or is that mostly the Hockey / Tronna crowd?
loved the Saskatoon reference… Whenever I stumble over something, I note that my feet go halfway to Saskatoon (from central MA).
But we’ll done… I spent a few years working with folks based out Maple Laff he’ll, and I read it in their voice

Edit -
Would Ben be better as Simzy?

Pennington was hurt in year 2. Then the owner insisted on dick pics Favre who was 8-3 before getting hurt.

Cleveland was a disaster situation Mangini should have passed on. The owner made it worse by bringing in Holmgren in some form of advisory role and then selling the team

Mangini had Brian Daboll as his OC, and the rest of the staff was pretty good.

Simzy would be good
I am in Saskatoon, and I just took what I would maybe say as a nets coach and said it like I was back on the farm, omitting the f words though. I will see some guys from my hometown at Candian Tire to the Bay, and I fall right back into it. This is pretty much what I said to a guy at the mall a week ago. After he walked away my daughter said "Who are you?"

"Hey, lookie here, takes all kinds, eh?"
"Why you ol bugger whatya up too?'
"Same ol' earnin' my GST rebate, eh."
"Still drivin' fords or have ya wised up there?"
"Oh, jeez, I sawaguy (one word) by side otharoad, (also one word) on way over, thought for sure was you and your Chev!"

He was under .500 with the Jets, and 5-11 in each of two seasons in Cleveland, idiot owner or no. And then never had a job in the NFL again.

And yeah, Flores was clearly building a strong program that had Patriots fans more than a little scared, with back-to-back winning seasons and the first division sweep of the Patriots since 2000, until he too was undermined by an idiot owner. There are lots of teams that would probably be hiring Flores were it not for the lawsuit right now. I guess the overall W-L is comparable to Mangini at the Jets.

Feel free to put either or both in the "Fine, I guess?" category if you want, it doesn't change the story.
