Will Henry allow cameras into his office when he fires Cora this summer? That’d be a weird watch.
They will use Steve Buscemi as a Cora stand in

Edit - Imagine how amazing it would be if we found out everyone, including myself, bemoaning the ownership lack of spending this offseason was wrong. Instead every free agent that heard about the Netflix show just choose another team. Yamamato turns down an extra 30 million because he didn't want to deal with the cameras in the locker room. Man the world would burn.

Double Edit - It would be even better if the name of the series was "Full Throttle: A Red Sox Season". Nips would have set the servers on fire.

If they spent less time worrying about Netflix and more time singing free agents, Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts, and Jon Lester would still be on the team.

An objection to Fan Fiction from a guy who has a somewhat creepy pre-teen avatar of a iconic detective. . .and sees mysterious conspiracies everywhere?
You haven't been around long? For some reason I thought you were here longer. That went up when I was called Nancy Drew for my unrequited love of JD Drew.

I have yet to see rage or even curmudgeonly takes.
Some of us are just a bit skeptical of the whole project for a variety of reasons ranging from the 2025 release date - as others have noted many of the subjects may well have moved on to new teams or may lose their roster spot next spring - to the thought that the source material itself may not be all that compelling.

However nobody said this is absolutely going to be a failure. Given all the other questions about the team's current approach, its feels reasonable to question their motivations (obviously money and marketing to start) for agreeing to participate.

Maybe it will be compelling regardless of how the team does but when I look at that Coach Prime series after this past college football season being long over, I have to wonder who will watch that going forward. This sort of content just feels like it gets stale very quickly.

Didn't make much of an impression on me.
Of course you didn't like JD Drew, you hate good baseball and winning.

Let's talk about all American Hero JD Drew

JD Drew was a winner. JD Drew was one of the best college baseball players of all time. He literally had a 30-30 season in college playing less than 70 games. Did he go play for the Phillies when they offered a paltry 3 million dollars? No, he bravely said, I am going to St Paul. There JD Drew smashed baseballs and personally played with first female athlete to play professionally integrated baseball, Ila Borders (also the first woman to get men's baseball collegiate scholarship).

When JD Drew graced major league baseball with his presence he went on to have the most beautiful left handed swing most people saw. I saw @AlNipper49 cry while watching it once. And while JD Drew was winning World Series Rings and All Star MVPs, did he once care? No. He didn't need to. He was a hero. In fact in 2011, he felt disgust over how the team's season went, so he retired. JD Drew realized the game had passed him by when he cared.

The Red Sox could desperately use a hero like JD Drew today.

Edit - If a dope wants to break this out, I think a good JD Drew thread would be great to break the tension and negativity on the main board.

JD Drew doesn't actually have a brother named Stephen. Stephen is just a failed experiment by our government to perfect JD Drew's genes after they improved Tim's genes to make JD.

Maybe Netflix overestimated their value and were surprised to find a soft free agency market. Then they panicked and settled for a pillow deal to avoid sitting out spring training. They're probably hoping that if they put in the work for four months, they can get traded to a more interesting team at the deadline.

This video of Story mentoring Grissom, Casas, Hamilton, and Yorke at a little mini-camp Story put together just popped up on Youtube and it's honestly pretty cool. I have no idea if I'll watch the Netflix show (likely will) but these little insider peeks at the players are fun. Not as fun as having days long internet fights about Sam Kennedy quotes, but fun none-the-less.

In his newsletter today Craig Calcaterra mentioned this series and talked about how baseball players are notoriously boring, or tow the same line. I think that the Sox have a lot of guys who do that, but one that seems to march to his own drum beat is Triston Casas. If this series gets any traction, I would expect that Casas is going to be the star of it. He doesn't seem to be like a dude that seeks out attention, but he's quirky enough that the camera will find him (which will piss the red asses off, but screw them) and I think that folks will like what they see.

He could be the Sox' version of Joey Votto.

J. D. was a fun guy to watch. He oozed talent.

Am I correct in inferring you're not a big fan of brother Stephen though?

Personally I think it's kind of cool that the two brothers both won a ring with us.

No, Stephen is just not our lord and savior JD Drew. They both have rings

I preferred Tim, who was once traded for Cliff Lee and Grady Sizemore... well, sorta.

Both Stephen and J.D. Drew wore number 7 on the Red Sox if I remember correctly. Small world!

Man did you see Casas and his beard? I'm pretty sure I saw him sing with Tracy Chapman at the Grammys the other night.

Somewhere
Baseball as a national pastime is dying, so anything that moves the game in the other direction is a good thing as far as I’m concerned. If that means more Netflix, promotional TikToks, whatever. Let a thousand pink hats bloom.

It only improves the brand and merch sales if the team wins and is successful. I'm not sure Franz in Munich is going to buy a City Connect jersey if the team struggles or is even just mediocre next year. It's a little shocking that they would open up access to the team in what's at best a state of transition, which makes me think that FSG is foolishly optimistic about how this year is going to go.
Where are you seeing the rage? No one seems angry at all to me. I think that there are people wondering why if the Sox are going to be on a TV show they wouldn't sign some people with star power rather than trot out a milquetoast squad that's probably destined for fourth or fifth in the division. I think that's a reasonable question.

But I guess that's this is this year's offseason, nothing but mixed messages.
Netflix intends to produce a series of documentaries giving the viewers an inside look at a MLB team. They began with the Red because as we all know, it’s the 20th anniversary of the 2004 comeback.

MLB’s vision is to show the human side of a professional athlete. They’re not interested in the games, so if the team sucks I doubt that will play a role. They’re already filming at JetBlue Park.

This production is between MLB and Netflix. All the Red are giving is access. They have no say in the finished product.

honest question... if you knew this was happening wouldn't you want somebody like at least Justin Turner? An amazing personality, loves the city, leader... meant for a staring role in something like this.
You could say the same thing about Sale. Not only is he in an interesting personality and would make for a good character in the Netflix series but he has an interesting story too. The old grizzled vet saddled with injuries in recent years trying to make a comeback. Would have been fascinating to watch.

This documentary already has a pretty solid underlying theme in place - they have a team with players, former players, manager, media and fans generally disenchanted with ownership's investment in the team.

That was really cool. However, wasn't that the Netflix cameraman in the shot at one point? So it isn't exactly a preview -- though Netflix obviously covering that moment.

I've been really interested to see the Netflix cameraman popping up here and there throughout the game broadcasts this year. It keeps me wondering about what exactly they are going to do in this documentary. They are getting tons and tons of footage, but I don't exactly know what their angle is going to be. All in all, I will be very interested to see. Let's hope they do a good job capturing priceless footage of this team's improbably playoff run this year.

Is this a teaser for how the Netflix series is being shot?
Awesome stuff. So, so happy for all 3 of them, especially Duran who forced his way onto the All Star team over the past few weeks. Jansen should also be going instead of Holmes, but I'm mostly just happy for the 3 who made it.

And to the question re Netflix, I assume this is Sox social media/video production. Most teams posted almost identical videos of their players being announced to the ASG (I assume the league requested that the team social media shops make these videos or it's just standard practice), but ~ 1 minute when Cora's hugging Houck there's a cameraman who gets in the way of the shot for a few seconds that I assume is a Netflix camera guy.

It will probably be a lot like the All or Nothing team-season documentaries Netflix has made for various sports. Check out one or two of those if you want to get a feel for what it will be like. I'm partial to the Arsenal one, but I root for that team.

Their Tour de France stuff is heavy on bullshit narrative drama for the casuals rather than the more boring realities, but it's really good anyway.

True story. There has been a ton of radio silence for all the naysayers and haters who couldn't stop posting their vitriol just a few short months ago.
Hate and vitriol aside, very few of us thought that the Sox had much of a chance to finish the season 9 games over .500 and sitting in the 3rd wildcard spot, let alone find themselves in that position a week before the ASB. I think most of us are quite pleased with the way the season has gone to date, especially when you consider the poor play and mountain of injuries that the team was saddled with early on. We asked for the kids to play, we asked for a competing team and we wanted something to cheer about. The finish line is still far from sight, but ATM we're getting much of what we wanted.

LOL, the back of Duran's t-shirt reads something like: "It's only delusional until it works."

I agree with most of this. I picked them to go 85-77 and battle for a wild card but fall just short. But i also did say that that had the chance to be athletic and fun to watch, and with the new rules with bigger bases and less throws to 1st by pitchers, this team was better equipped than past ones. I also stated that a young team that gets hot and plays hard can snowball and that's pretty much what is happening.

If this is as good as Full Swing, the Netflix series on golf, I’ll be happy. Actually, the parts of Full Swing not about LIV were the best to me. Great human interest stuff.
