The Oakland Ballers won’t even open their first training camp for another three weeks, but they’ve already lost a player to a big-league team.
The Boston Red Sox swiped hard-throwing reliever Danny Kirwin from the independent team on Tuesday after the Ballers posted video of Kirwin throwing 98 mph.
It might sound strange, but this is all part of the Ballers’ plan: They want to sign the best and brightest undrafted players and provide them a showcase to get a shot with a major-league organization.
“This is exactly what we wanted to happen,” said assistant general manager Tyler Petersen. “In fact, we sort of had an idea that we might lose one or two guys before camp even started, and Danny’s been working so hard for this opportunity that I’m not surprised that happened.”
Kirwin, like several other players on the Ballers’ roster, played in the Draft League after his final season at Rider University; that split-season league is operated by MLB for undrafted players, but his 3.68 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 14⅔ innings didn’t translate to a minor-league spot, with his 13 walks potentially a factor. According to Petersen, Kirwin spent the offseason working out diligently at Tread Athletics, a baseball performance company, and that paid off with more consistent upper-90s velocity.
Tread sent the Red Sox Kirwin's Trackman information from his bullpen session Friday, and Boston texted him the next day. Kirwin will get a physical Wednesday.
"I wasn't expecting this," Kirwin said, "I thought I would sign with a team this year, but I thought it would be during the season in Oakland."
Kirwin throws an upper-90s four-seamer, a mid-90s sinker and a cutter, slider and changeup.

All this data and video is encouraging. Is there a reason that this guy went undrafted out of college, or is this Tread Athletics place a source of miracles?

Love him already. An uncompelling anamorph who needed a bit more time to develop. Put him into the Rube Bailey and see what comes out.

First off, the video of the kid is terrific…I think? Honestly, no idea but it looks good and is already a great story.

Second, I’ve just learned more about Fleetwood Mac than I ever thought possible (deep googling). Many kudos all around.
Very good. Early Fleetwood Mac.

No doubt he looks like Mr. Wonderful in some of these videos. And I barely know what I’m taking about, but watching the video of his throwing session… I worry he’s a bit of a mirage.

Pro scouting is over my head, but I used to be a catcher into college and… kid has incredible stuff but his pitches kinda go their own way. He misses the catcher completely and hits the net on a few of his throws, all of which look like max effort throwing as much as pitching.

Still, pitching heroes are hard to find, I’m happy for the kid, there’s no risk, and even after a few short months, the way I feel is if they see something, in Bailey & Breslow I trust.

Early Fleetwood Mac recorded a concert in Boston in 1970 that wasn't released until 1985 (and there were subsequent later releases). It's sometimes called "Live in Boston." It's amazing. Highly recommend. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_in_Boston_(Fleetwood_Mac_album)

/hijack.
It was released earlier than that, as a “bootleg” record. Of course it later turned out to be a case of the record company screwing over the band. But Live At The Boston Tea Party is seriously one of the great live albums ever recorded. That version of Jumping At Shadows is hauntingly beautiful.
