So Bloom was supposed to project that X was a $200m player & sign him for a discount prior to X hitting free agency but Boras was going to...not realize that?

X having full no trade would have complicated the hell out of trying to trade him & so it just kind of is what it is.
Especially when X publicly stated that he had no desire to go anywhere around the trade deadline. Trying to trade him would just have created more bad pr and more bad blood when he refused the trade anyway.

I didn't see the Martin signing coming at all.....FO is keeping stuff under wraps.... I would not be surprised to see a signing or a trade that comes completely our of left field (figuratively speaking).

In theory they had their shot because he was still with the team, but it was widely reported that Bogaerts had intended to opt out at the end of the season. So with that in mind what do you do to keep him? Breaking the bank is likely what it would have taken to prevent the opt out.
The Red Sox should not be setting the market for Xander. Let the other interested teams do that and then decide it you're willing to match the best offer. Maybe it's naive, but I think Boston will have a chance to keep him if it wants to.

Rumor has it that the Red Sox should not have allowed Bogaerts to test the market.

Good morning my people!
Happy Monday!

Xander Bogaerts has been the most acclaimed of the four star SS in free agency. His durability, consistent hitting and improved defense are factors in his favor.

#RedSox should not have allowed him to test the market...

We continue, Positive and OK.

This. If you hire Boras, you're testing the market. And frankly speaking, if my union could afford to hire Boras for our next contract negotiation? I would support it.

The time to try to lock him up was last off-season; perhaps had they approached him with an offer equal to or better than Semien’s, he would have accepted. I’m sure the signing of Story and the subsequent 4/80 offer solidified his intent to test the market.

In this day and age, a player of Xander's caliber not choosing to test the market would be foolish.

Is this guy a reporter or Xander's publicist?

Unless someone else is actually close to signing him, this is a lot of noise.
Exactly. I imagine one could tweet that any of the other 29 MLB teams is "not close" to bringing in Bogaerts and it would be just as true and meaningful as Jon Morosi's "news".

Maybe they should've given Wacha a QO. This market is nuts.
The market does look nuts. But on the other hand, the only nutty contracts (imo) given out so far this year have been from the Mets and Rangers, who were exactly the two ownership groups that set the market way above what it ended up being last year. So IDK.

(But I agree that they should have QO'd Wacha)

Big difference between DeGrom, Verlander, and Wacha. I'll still take the under on Wacha getting something resembling the QO.

On the bright side, Paxton at 1/$4.2 million is looking pretty good. On paper anyway.

What also looks pretty good are homegrown starting pitchers, and guys like Whitlock and Pivetta. But if Bello has a good '23, really smart would be trying to figure out long term deals then.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this Xander's first go at free agency because he already signed a fairly team-friendly deal that bought out some arb years? Also, did Jason Varitek- a Boras client- ever get to FA? There are at least a few examples of Boras clients not heading to FA and squeezing every last dollar out of the market.

This looks promising. I still don't know who it is, but if I recall correctly you said you've seen good information from him in the past, so fingers crossed
Just scanned through this anonymous tweet creature's feed, and all it is is throwing shit at the wall. Throw enough and something will stick and, presto, he's an insider. I only scrolled back a week and it seems like he's linked Rodon with half the league.

I get that it's just the rumors thread, but holy shit is that well below board standards for a "source".

Eh, I disagree and I don't think the known beat reporters are any better, but it is a rumor thread. I kind of disagree with this thread existing on the main board at all, but since it does, it is for rumors. That doesn't mean anyone has to take any of them seriously.

We went down this road the last time that Twitter feed was posted. We're just going to have to live with it. Best we can do is continue to post what utter crap it is.

Yeah, I just did the same ... 15 minutes or so before saying the Sox he had the Yankees in on Rodon. Oh well.

It reads like a terminally online person trying to gain clout as a supposed insider.

The beat guys at least have opportunities and the connections to talk to front office folks, players, and agents. Some of what they report might be bullshit that's being fed to them for the purposes of disinformation, but they're still getting it from the right places. Anonymous twitter trolls are just that, trolls.

This thread generally sucks, but why make it worse with below standard "sourcing"? I mean, other than to troll the thread. If the thread shouldn't exist, then just fucking lock it.

I mean, he did just say that Verlander would be wrapped up today and then like a half hour later the deal was announced.

But the point with this one specifically, everyone already knew the Yankees are in on Rodon. This is potentially new info, I hadn't seen anyone mention Rodon connected to BOS before. He doesn't say they're going to get him, just that they are at the 'forefront of negotiations'. Again, it's the rumors thread, shit changes fast and of course most of them will end up wrong.

I simply don't agree that this is the way things work now. Beat reporters generally don't leak advance info, they post what they're told to and what they're allowed to, usually once things have actually happened. Have we all forgotten about KatyPerrysBootyHole and wetbutt23?

Oh, well if a couple anonymous tweeters got something right five years ago, then we should just trust them all as worthy of our attention. Like I said, this guy you keep quoting throws a ton of shit out there and every once in a while something he "reports" turns out to happen. Doesn't make him right or well connected. It just makes him lucky. It's not as though he was the only one who suggested or thought the Mets would be in on Verlander.

SAN DIEGO — While the Red Sox saw first baseman/designated hitter José Abreu as a great fit — a righthanded run producer in the middle of their order — they didn’t come close to the offer for which he ultimately signed with the Astros.
According to major league sources, the Red Sox did make a three-year offer to Abreu, but their offer was in the low- to mid-$40 million range. Abreu went to the Astros on a three-year, $59.5 million deal.
In 2022, despite a career-low 15 home runs, Abreu remained productive, hitting .304/.378/.446 with 40 doubles for the White Sox in his age-35 season. With that performance — and a career .292/.354/.506 line — Abreu represented one of the top bats available on the free agent market, and likely the best who will not receive a nine-figure deal, in an offseason where position players Aaron Judge, Carlos Correa, Trea Turner, Xander Bogaerts, Dansby Swanson, and Brandon Nimmo are expected to command massive long-term contracts.
With Abreu off the market, the Red Sox are expected to continue to look for corner/DH bats, with righthanded hitters such as Mitch Haniger, Justin Turner, and Trey Mancini available, and veteran lefthanded bats Michael Conforto and Michael Brantley likewise up for bidding.
https://www.bostonglobe.com/2022/12/05/sports/red-sox-made-three-year-offer-jos-abreu-it-didnt-come-close-what-he-signed-with-astros/

Feel like if the reports that Abreu was our # 1 target were true, our offer would have been higher than what is reported above..

. And multiple sources have said the Red Sox are not going after a bunch of No. 4s and 5s this offseason. They want a couple of No. 2s — give or take — who push their existing starters into more appropriate roles (Chris Sale at No. 3, Garrett Whitlock at No. 4, Brayan Bello or James Paxton or Nick Pivetta at No. 5 — something like that). To make it happen, the Red Sox don’t need a Cy Young winner, but they don’t need Garrett Richards, either.

We know they nearly signed Zach Eflin — is he a top-half-of-the-rotation starter? — and made a qualifying offer to Nathan Eovaldi. Multiple sources have said they are eyeing Kodai Senga, but apparently that applies to everyone. Chris Bassitt is also out there. Trade speculation has swirled around Shane Bieber and Corbin Burnes.

So they were off by 33% on an offer to their top target? That’s pretty alarming. Have they just completely misjudged the market?

Passan is tweeting something similar...
Jeff Passan ⑦
@jeefpasssan

#RedSox hoping to add at least 1 Starting Pitcher by the end of the day whether that’s a top of the line starter or depth starter. They are at the front of the line for Carlos Rodon and have also talked to the #Marines for Marco Gonzales which could be done by tonight.
I deleted this once already, fake account.

Note that the real Passan only tweets actual news, he doesn’t do the “hearing [Team X] might be in on [Player Y]” type of rumormongering.
