PHOENIX ‘ According to a major league source, the Red Sox are open to the idea of engaging manager John Farrell in talks regarding a contract extension prior to the beginning of the 2015 season.
Farrell is headed into the last guaranteed year of a three-year deal he signed with the Red Sox following the ‘12 season. The Red Sox hold a team option on the deal for ‘16.
The 52-year-old Farrell, who is currently managing a group of Major League All-Stars during an exhibition tournament in Tokyo, has a 168-156 regular season record with the Red Sox. He finished second in the ‘13 American League Manager of the Year voting after guiding his team to a world championship.

I'd like them to see how he does this season before extending him. We've had two pretty extreme seasons from him and I think it makes a little hard to figure out how good at the job he is.

That being said, he does seem to be a good clubhouse manager and there's certainly value in that.

I'd hate to see an extension because of his in-game tactics. Perhaps I was spoiled by Francona, but I find myself often wondering what the hell Farrell is thinking while a game is in progress, especially for decisions that should be simple and straightforward (like taking advantage of platoon splits.)

After Valentine I don't think any of us are ever going to underestimate the value of having the locker room under control, but I still want a manager that gets the most out of the product on the field and after a fairly sizable sample I'm not sure Farrell is that guy.

You mean two pretty extreme seasons from the roster.

Barring a complete change of character from Farrell and how he handles the clubhouse, he'll be a Red Sox for a long time. I've said it before but it bears repeating: he is their guy. He is on the same wave length as the FO and Ownership. A few mis-timed bunt plays during a down year isn't going to change anything.

We got a World Series championship and a top 10 pick with Johnny. So far, so good!

I wouldn't be surprised to find out that the Front Office believes the value in a manager is overwhelmingly focused in that aspect. If you can keep the team focused and not make Grady Little-level boneheaded decisions, then you're what they want.

If the FO was wondering about John Farrell, we'd have read about it by now.  Just get the extension done and nip any lame-duck talk in the bud.
