The new bullpen ace.Probably not a great sign for Hanigan.
Holaday's pitching line so far this year: 1.1 innings, zero runs, zero hits, 0.00 WHIP.
BRyan HRyan Hanigan
Bryan Holaday
They'll almost be able to just cross out his name plate instead of replacing it.
Pretty sure that once the waiver claim is announced, it's a done deal. If it were a revocable waivers thing (Holaday was DFA so I don't believe that's the case), I think the waiving team would have to pull him back immediately and from an announcement standpoint there'd be nothing to report at all.So if he was claimed today, that means the roster move needs to be made by Sunday, I think.
I can't actually remember a situation like this before where the Sox claimed someone who was very unlikely to be called back by the waiving team, but essentially made someone on the 25 redundant.
I guess it happens, but it's going to be weird having Hanigan on the team and around the clubhouse for the next two days, knowing he's moving on. I don't know why the would, but can the Rangers waive their 48-hour call back period?
Oh, interesting. So we'll probably see a roster move today if he can get to L.A. in time to be the back up catcher.Pretty sure that once the waiver claim is announced, it's a done deal. When a player's contract is designated for assignment -- often abbreviated "DFA" -- that player is immediately removed from his club's 40-man roster. Within 10 days of the transaction, the player can either be traded, claimed off irrevocable outright waivers, assigned to the Minor Leagues or released -- though he must pass through waivers in order to be eligible for the latter two moves.
Says here he's still recovering with a thumb:Oh, interesting. So we'll probably see a roster move today if he can get to L.A. in time to be the back up catcher.
http://www.cbssports.com/fantasy/baseball/news/red-soxs-bryan-holaday-claimed-by-red-sox/Holaday was DFA'd by the Rangers on Monday in order to make room for the recently acquired Jonathan Lucroy and Jeremy Jeffress. The catcher has been recovering from a bruised thumb and should be activated by the Red Sox shortly after playing a couple more minor league games. Holaday has posted a .238 batting average with two home runs and 13 RBI over the course of 84 at-bats this season, but could wind up with the big league club down the stretch, especially if Ryan Hanigan or Sandy Leon go down with an injury.
Yep - that's what I thought as well. The original excuse for sending him down was they didn't want to lose Sandy or Hannigan - but are now jettisoning Hannigan for someone else's backup catcher.but could wind up with the big league club down the stretch, especially if Ryan Hanigan or Sandy Leon go down with an injury.
How big is the doghouse Vasquez occupies?
According to Ian York, a couple inches wider and taller than the typical doghouse.but could wind up with the big league club down the stretch, especially if Ryan Hanigan or Sandy Leon go down with an injury.

This is it. Vaz was supposed to be "The Guy". Swihart and Hanigan were just holding the spot down for him. Then Sandy Leon happened. I understand the injuries and the options game but wow, has Vaz fallen that far? AND Holaday will play a few games in front of Vaz first before joining the big club. So awkward for all.but could wind up with the big league club down the stretch, especially if Ryan Hanigan or Sandy Leon go down with an injury.

That is just speculation at this point, isn't it? His rehab in Texas was done, which is why he got DFA'd rather than rejoined the big club. This is it. Vaz was supposed to be "The Guy". It's getting harder to see, though it might be a bit soon to give up entirely. I think the hope was that his minor league walk rates would translate, and allow him to put up a .250/.320/.350 kind of line, which would be enough to get by with for a good defensive C. In 2014 that looked possible, but this year the discipline mysteriously disappeared. It's not that pitchers have been throwing him more strikes, it's that he's been chasing a whole lot more (O-Swing 25% in 2014, 35% this year).Does anyone think Vaz will ever hit in the majors? I just don't see it.
How does Vazquez not have an option after this year?Seven years later, the Sox finally get Holaday.
Seriously, though, it looks like the Sox are setting up an interesting situation in Spring Training next season.
Leon - 0 options, bad history
Holaday - 0 options, bad glove
Vazquez - 0 options, bad bat
Swihart - 2 options, bad ankle
Hanigan - kitchen options
Because he had one to start the year, got called up before burning it, and then get set down for being a noodle bat.How does Vazquez not have an option after this year?
Which he is currently burning.soxprospects.com shows Vazquez with 1 option left.
Ah, didn't realize he was on in 2013, thanks.Because he had one to start the year, got called up before burning it, and then get set down for being a noodle bat.
Don't forget, he was actually added to the 40-man only having reached AA, in the offseason before the 2013 season. And then he repeated it.
2013 - option 1
2014 - option 2
2015 - MLB DL so burned service time instead
2016 - option 3
As far as I know, with 8-9 pro ball season under his belt, he doesn't qualify for the 4th option year.
The stairs strike again?
Well .. Not really .. Why not just bring up Vazquez?
Ryan, you have a left ankle injury.Pete Abraham @PeteAbe
Sox saying Hanigan has a left ankle injury.
Why won't Holaday be on the bench tonight?I'm sure DD did put his hat in, but look what MIL got for him and Jeffress - two top pitching prospects. Too steep a price for a secondary need.
So are we playing on one catcher tonight? That's not good
I believe he has a thumb injury. The initial report said he would be available in a couple of days. Why won't Holaday be on the bench tonight?
Thanks, but I will refer you to Post #20 above.I believe he has a thumb injury. The initial report said he would be available in a couple of days.
I agree, but not everyone does. For example, forum member Bob Montgomery's Hat believes that the Red Sox are "fine at catcher." Catcher is the weakest offensive position in the Red Sox lineup, a trend that will likely continue for the next several seasons. Obviously, Lucroy would have solved the problem, but the asking price was pretty high, I presume, based on the players the Brewers obtained from the Rangers. This catching situation screamed for a foray into the Lucroy Sweepstakes if not for just a stopgap until Swihart is ready to take the reigns. He could have played in AAA for all of next year to recoup his lost ABs from this years injury. Next year's catching depth looks very weak.
Ortiz (pitching prospect) and Brinson (OF prospect) and a player to be named later. That's comparable to Devers and Kopech. Even though I wanted Lucroy, I don't make that deal if I'm the Red Sox. If you take out the relief pitcher, the price goes down, but the Brewers were probably thrilled to include the relief pitcher in order to obtain two excellent prospects.I'm sure DD did put his hat in, but look what MIL got for him and Jeffress - two top pitching prospects. Yeah, they're fine at catcher. Yeah, the worst offensive position in an excellent offensive lineup, isn't necessarily bad.I agree, but not everyone does. Leon: a good glove but hasn't hit throughout most of his career.
Hanigan: a washed up player, the Red Sox will likely decline his option.
Vazquez: a good glove but can he hit?
Swihart: a bit of a mystery. According to the most optimistic assessments, Swihart profiles as an above average bat with better than average defense. However, he didn't produce offensively this year prior to getting hurt and there are reasons to question his defense behind the plate. Thus, we might be looking at player with a mediocre bat together with below average defense behind the plate.
Holaday: a perennial back-up.
The Red Sox have a strong lineup going forward and so can arguably carry a weak hitting/strong fielding catcher. I think Vazquez will be that guy.
It's a safe bet, yeah. He's not going to quite get to 3 full years of service time (started at 2 years, 29 days and was inactive for ~60 days to start the year), but should get close enough to qualify as a Super-2.Leon is Arb eligible next year, right?
