And per NBC Sports, "it's real bad", with an Atlanta-area friend reporting (via Twitter) that Hanson is having some kind of organ failure of unknown origin. If you followed prospects in the late 2000s, you'll probably remember Hanson from his epic stint in the AFL in 2008 (28.2 IP, 49 Ks, 0.63 ERA) that helped lead him to the #4 overall slot on Baseball America's Top 100 prospects entering 2009. I really thought he had the chance to be a Cy Young caliber pitcher if his arm didn't fall off, but injuries took a toll really fast and he'd spent the past two years back in the minors. He's not even 30, so here's hoping he bounces back.

Fuck. That really sucks. I liked him a lot as a player. T&P to his family.

His only season with Los Angeles was difficult for Hanson off the field as well. Early in the year, Hanson's younger stepbrother died. Hanson spent three weeks away from the club mourning his death. He told Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times he had a tough time dealing with the loss.

“I was having mental issues with the death of my younger brother,” said Hanson, 26, two years older than his deceased brother. “I was just trying to get through it. I didn’t know how to handle it.

“That was the first time anything like that had ever happened to me. I didn’t know how to cope with it.”
