Not that I want to defend Farrell, but to be fair this year they had the luxury of the best record in team history (credit to Cora and the current staff for getting the team to that point) that made it easy to be overly cautious.
Last year the team clinched the division on September 30th. We can speculate, but we don’t really know if it would have been as easy a decision to shut Sale down if things were closer with the Yankees.
Like most everyone else, i’m concerned but hopeful it will work out. No matter what there is going to be a lot of angst for that first start, and even with the recent mixed results, I’m glad they were able to allow him to dial it back and at least attempt to get himself healthy for this postseason.
