Kickers and punters occupy a unique niche on a football team. They are typically off the field and out of sight for the vast majority of practices and games. And yet they are depended on not only to score points, but to win the battle of field position throughout a game, often with only a handful of chances. It is this mixture of isolation and importance that often leaves coaches with little to say regarding how they really feel about their kickers. Fortunately, I don’t have to say anything. The film of the play we’ll be looking at speaks loudly enough on its own.

Glad you're getting something out of them.  It may actually be some of the most fun I have in any given week, so good to see that other people like it too.

On a related note to this article, I mentioned earlier in the year that punt blocks appeared to be happening at a higher rate than previous years.  That has continued to this point, with 12 blocks through the first 6+ weeks of the season.  The previous five years saw an average of only 10.6 punts blocked for the entire season.  Clearly there is something happening here, and it's going to be something that I'm going to start looking into over the next couple of weeks.

So true story.

I was at a party my junior year of college at the football house.  I was talking to a couple girls for awhile, and finally one of them asked what position I played.  I told them I was a kicker.  The girl who asked scrunched up her face like I had just told her I had AIDS, shook her head, and said, "Oh my god I can't believe I've been talking to the kicker for the last ten minutes" before she walked off.  The other one kind of eyed me up and down in a way that seemed like she was still interested, so I asked her what she was thinking about.  Her response?  "I don't really know much about football, so I don't know what that means."

"Well let me tell you about how kickers are the most important player on the football field..."
