He will be.  Can't wait to hear Minihane go off on him.
Is there any chance that Mort knows he was absolutely played by the NFL front office, made him look like a fool, and he's prepared to go ballistic tomorrow as a preemptive defense from Minihane's attack?  Or is that too short sighted because he makes his meal on NFL sources?

No, but I'd loved to see him pressed on his not really retracting or amending anything, and basically diasppearing.

IIRC, Mort was right about the Colts raising ball inflation as an issue leading up to the game, which means Blandino lied about that.

My money is on Kensil. Isray leaked the initial story to Kravitz but Kensil probably leaked the 11 of 12 balls are 2 PSI under the limit to make the Patriots look bad.

Well no Mortensen on WEEI.

Hey folks. It's 4am. Just found word that "somebody" has backed out of his appearance on the @DandCShow . We will call him anyway at 7:45.
Least shocking thing ever, I was amazed ESPN would ever let him discuss this publicly.

And I believe that Kensil pressured Mort to keep that tweet up to embarrass the Patriots.

Not a fan of D&C but good radio this morning with them just killing the league, Kensil, and Mort.

Edit: Mort emails D&C and said he does not endorse misreporting and will not appear on the show today because WEEI drummed up is appearance and will not address this until its over.  Even says do not call at 7:45.  Will not be allow himself to be the center piece of this story.  Wow does he look like petulant little girl.

No surprise there. ESPN isn't in the business of editorial accountability. They're into turning a buck, truth be damned. Even if they were going to reveal who the source was (which Mortensen wouldn't even do), they would setup some 30 minute TV show special named "Leaked".

In this case, I imagine their puppeteers at the NFL HQ got wind of the appearance. "Hey ESPN, how would you like some more Jaguars-Texans Monday night football games?"
No surprise Mortensen continues to lick the corporate boots.

As if we needed another reason to never set eyes/ears on an ESPN program again..

Why does he want to wait until this is over and not now? Is he afraid that saying he was duped by the league would help Brady's case? This is obviously rhetorical, but I think still worth asking.

I love the "I refuse to be put at the center of this story." You know the easy way to fix that? Out your source. I hope this is pressure from the NFL/ESPN because no reporter should act like this.

He can't out the source, but he should have walked back his report months ago and now he's in an untenable position. And we can tell from the ridiculously defensive tone of his email that he has been dreading his accountability moment for a long, long time.

The truth really is a disinfectant.

Yes Dennis just said he was told that Kensil was the source of Mort's story. They called Mort but it went right to voicemail. They also got a number for Kensil and called him. His wife picked up and laughed at the producer and told him he won't be talking to you.

Yea probably unrealistic. But if I got played like Mort I'd be beyond pissed.

D&C beating the Kensil drum still.

Love that they are pounding on how Mort and Kensil have to start sweating because their roles are starting to come to light to more and more people.  I'd have to imagine Mort will not be welcome at Patriot Place this season.  Do the Patriots start putting more heat on Mort and Kensil in public?

They absolutely should put the heat on them. If this ever comes out that Kensil was a behind this (which I believe to be the case) and dropped this info to Mort, then Kraft could be cashing in big time from ESPN.

I must have listened at precisely the wrong time in the 7:00 hour. When I turned it on, they were going over the Jayson Whitlock " This is a make-up call on a white player" angle. An angle where I have no interest in hearing their take - so - click.

Cashing in, how, precisely? Mort's reporting may have been (was) shitty, but it's no basis for a lawsuit. If that's what you're implying.

I can just see her going into the bedroom and saying, "Honey, WEEI Boston is on the phone, would you like to speak to them?"  Kensil" Umm no.  Aww shit I'm in big f*****g trouble."

WEEI a Boston based sports radio show isn't exactly the New York Times, I'm sure he's not sweating any more than he may have been before just because a guy named Lumpy from WEEI called.

This is infuriating. He is basically only willing to address it AFTER the damage of his inaccurate reporting is done. What's the point? Might as well just stand by the lie in perpetuity.

I don't want to muck up the great legal thread with Mort crap but what possible reason would he have to say that but stay quiet now? He's not involved in the lawsuit at all. It would look terrible for the NFL case but Mort shouldn't care. Is it a career move in him not wanting to screw any NFL sources even if he didn't out this particular source? But then why would he say he hopes Brady wins and he'll talk AFTER the suit? Doesn't make sense to me

Two career moves:
1. Wants sources to keep telling him things in the future
2. Wants ESPN to not fire him for angering a profitable partner (the NFL)

Gotta love Mort acting like he's beholden to some kind of moratorium on investigating during an ongoing case. Given his position and supposed sources, the 11 of 12 tweet didn't have to be the end of it for him. Keep doing your job instead of turtling while your colleague runs circles around you simply by reporting in a careful and conscientious manner. I'm sure it bugs him that he can't post a single random tweet without a dozen pats fans making an 11 of 12 joke but playing the innocent bystander card is a bad look here.

You're assuming ESPN and the NFL are two separate entities with arms length separation. They are not. ESPN is the NFL's 3rd party public relations arm. Would a public relations firm reveal damaging information about its own client? The notion that Mortensen is an independent journalist is incorrect.

In short, Finkle is Einhorn, Einhorn is Finkle. They're the same people.

I don't expect him to out his source nor do I care. He just needs to acknowledged that he was clearly given false information. That in itself would get some headlines and shift the PR needle a bit.

All this D&C stuff is great.

If I were on Brady's PR team, I'd see Mort and his tweet as key to Brady's reputation about cheating. Most people believe that Brady and the Patriots have cheated many times (largely due to the sustained press attention received by Spygate/Camerapositioninggate).

But if you can communicate that the NFL is out to get Brady and the Patriots, people will look at all claims with a more skeptical eye. The hard part is reaching people- everyone assumes by default the NFL is generally honest.

D&C took the first step. In a fair world, the Globe and Herald would then write stories titled "Was the NFL the source of false claims about Brady?". Felger and other radio hosts would ask why Mort lied about Brady, etc.

We won't get that from the Globe, but if we are lucky, this issue of the NFL being out to get Brady will blow up. Cross your finger, maybe we can get Simmons to do a few podcasts on it.
