Smashmouth football is back in Foxboro!!

When you also consider we have Jakob Johnson at FB, this could be a great year for the running game. Maybe that's the plan with QB so unsettled

It was the plan last season too.

Between pass attempts (440) and sacks (37), the Pats had 477 pass plays. They had 502 rush attempts. That's 51% of their plays were runs. Now to be fair, some of those runs were scrambles, and I can't tease out how many of those there were. So it's probably about 50-50 mix, which in today's NFL is a very run-heavy attack.

I honestly think it was the plan in 2019, too, then they had the OL/FB injuries and the running game was awful. But they've been investing heavily in being able to run the ball, often at the expense of the passing attack, since 2018.

The o-line, however it shakes out, should be pretty filthy, and with Jakob at fb, I’m hyped for Damien Harris in 2021 regardless of how the rest of the offseason goes

Harris and Sony should have huge years with this offensive line.
Yup. Harris was very good but Sony really was a bright spot last year as well. 5.7 YPC without the threat of a passing game at all. Both of those guys will benefit if we can find someone who can make defenses pay out of play action over the middle of the field. Henry would be great but probably not happening. Rudolph would be another solid option. Hopefully, we get something out of Asiasi/Keene as well but not exactly banking on that.

He looked healthy, and had more of that college explosion. But what really excited me about him was how much better he looked catching the ball, looked like a different guy.

What fantastic news. Now they just need to re-sign Andrews, add a backup center and maybe another OG backup and they are set.

One thing I love about the Patriots is they have invested as a franchise in the OL. The Patriots are the Steeler's Wide Receivers of offensive line. Trent Brown playing next to Onwenu if Onwenu is an LG? LOL say hello to 5 yards a carry.

Or if Onwenu slots in at LG and Brown is RT... Onwenu pulls to the right side with Trent Brown setting one side of the hole and Onwenu the other. This is fucking glorious.

Imagine being a linebacker and an edge and you are assigned to go against a pulling Onwenu and Trent Brown? Good luck. Bring icepacks.

And another thing I would tease out: if the Pats want to draft a QB early it would behoove them to give him the most protection possible his first year. Guys like Watson, Wilson, Lance, and even... McCorkle Jones would benefit from as much time as possible to throw as adjusting to the speed of the NFL will be an issue for all of them. Duh - normal. If they get just two more good receivers with this OL I think they are cooking with gas. They have the money to do it.

Related to the running game - What is the status of Danny Vitale for the upcoming season? I know he signed a one-year deal but then opted out. Does that contract carry over to next season or is he a FA?

I agree across the board on this post. I would add that I hope that their #1 priority (non-QB division) is a WR1, but #2 priority should be TE1, especially a true dual-threat TE. Then maybe they can find a WR2.

I'm no draft expert, but considering the amount of draft capital they spent last year -- to little effect -- perhaps TE1 is a free agent target, while WR1 might be draft pick. Then again, knowing the Pats' track record on WR drafting since 2003, we might be better served with making both positions vet free agents (or trades).

I think thats the the way to go. Personally Id do my best to get Jimmy G, build your offense with established Free Agents and draft defense.

I’d also re-sign Guy and try to get Van Noy inexpensively if possible. Getting Hightower and Chung back alone will help the D. Not in the long term but for 2021.

we can have a great running game but it doesn't help when you are behind high octane offenses and need to score twice fast. Granted I think our D can keep things close but with no real TE, WRs other team defenses will key in on our running

I think we can comfortably say that WR/TE will be addressed in some form before the season starts. We're not going to enter the season with an Old Jules, Jakobi, Harry, Asiasi, and Keene, that's for sure.

He’s frigging GIGANTIC. There was a great photo posted of him and Aaron Donald during the super bowl and Donald literally looks like a child next to him.

Trying to get under 380?

Holy smokes, that's a man right there.
That is one of the best news post the FA period. A healthy & motivated Trent Brown is what, a top-5 tackle in the league?

Whoa! That's not 'shopped?
It's an incredible photo. Then again, Brown looks big and stands out even from all-22 tapes. Check out 2:16 from this clip where he just throws around Dante Fowler like a rag doll:
