White has the power to stack offensive tackles and overpower tight ends. He locates the ball, gets off blocks, chases with good effort and is an effective tackler. He relies on power too much but has a high ceiling -- he's scratching the surface in terms of his ability to get to the quarterback. He's a good player, I saw him play some at ODU before transferring, but man, offense has to be addressed at some point.

Well, hopefully they'll tap in the depth on WR and TE in the 3rd and 4th rounds.

I can also see them using the 4th rounders to move up. At least 2 more trades today by BB, I bet.

With the high-powered offenses we're surrounded by in the AFC, I'm good with loading up on Defenders to slow them down.

This. How the hell are we going to score? We're not shutting teams out. I love both of their picks, but this feels like a full reset building the defense and then finding a QB down the road. This team cannot compete offensively. I guess JuJu could turn into Justin Jefferson, but I'm not betting on it.

He's obviously bigger than LT and you never compare to the GOAT, but, knowing absolutely nothing about this kid other than what I've read here and based mostly on his reaction to being drafted while on live camera, he's giving me LT vibes.

What's the prime age for football? 26-28?

If anything, I wonder if a slightly older player is actually preferable. Most careers in the NFL are short, maybe it's better when the 5 year rookie deal takes a player in to 29.

This is what I was talking about with a friend earlier today. It was in reference to an older QB but still.

If you assume you are doing great if you get 10 years out of a player (the average is about 3, but it's fair to expect a good player to last a little longer), then what's better - getting a player's age 22-32 or 24-34 seasons?

I would guess that a 22 year old player would need 2-3 years before reaching his best seasons. I would also guess that a 24 year old comes in better prepared, if for no other reason, he's more mature personally. Not in every case of course, but in general.

And only if you're talking about speed positions (WR, CB), then yeah, I'd rather have age 22-32 seasons. But otherwise, I do think it makes some sense to draft an older player - better chance he can play right away, and you're getting his prime while under his rookie deal.

JJ was what, the 5th WR taken in 2020? 22nd overall. He wasn't "JJ" until he was. There were zero wide receivers taken when the Pats picked at 14. They traded down and still had options. JSN, Flowers, etc might all suck or go Henry Ruggs or sonething, but I guess hanging your young QB out to dry is the route. Like I said, hopefully that's part of the plan because I don't see any other explanation.

I think that’s exactly what it is. If BB was bullish on Mac as his future QB, he’d prioritize getting him some help.

It sucks in a way but I’m ultimately fine with it. We’re miles off competing and need to add talent all over the roster. Build the talent base, let Mac sink or swim (probably the former), and see what we can do next offseason with more draft capital and a strong cap position.

White said he’d had no contact with the Pats-that kind of suggest to me that they had just decided he was pretty much absolutely a fit but didn’t want to tip anyone off more to their interest (and perhaps didn’t really see themselves having a shot because they assumed he was a first). Interestingly some internet sleuths have noticed the clip BB was watching might have been UNC-Tech so perhaps the Pats were toying with White when they did take Gonzalez.

I think the difference is that apart from the very top talents who could play earlier but are forced to wait a couple of years, players will declare for the draft not at fixed age or fixed place in their development curve, but at a fixed skill level -- when they first reach a high enough level to play in the NFL. So the player who reaches that level at 22 projects to have a much better age 24-32 than one who reaches that level at 24, meaning the total value over 22-32 ends up being far higher. The age 33-34 seasons might rate to be better than 22-23, but the total value is much higher assuming a typical growth curve.

As you point out, this gets more complicated because of rookie contracts, since the most valuable players are those where the rookie scale keeps them underpaid. Further, for players available with the same pick, the current skill of the 24 year old is likely to be a bit higher since they're less projectable. So the value over the first four years ends up being a bit closer, and if you extend them, you're now paying market rate. So I'd expect the value over four years to be similar but if you could really lock up 10 years, you'd much rather have the 22 year old.

I think you’d also want to know if there’s a meaningful difference in career length among players who are rookies at 24 vs. 22. Wouldn’t you also want to compare the first 4/5 years since that’s what you are found to get on a rookie deal? Any years after that will come via FA / extension.

It seems folks don't want to at least entertain the idea that BB feels that BoB, a real OL coach, and guys like JuJu and Gesicki are going to be a help for Mac.

I am not saying it's the right call, but that's at least a discussion.
