Wheatley Jr is a backup at best IMO. Converted TE who went from Michigan to Stony Brook and went undrafted and has been bouncing around training camps the past couple of seasons.

Looks like he can be a good blocking TE at least given his background.

Not a lot of info out there, but this write up from Jacob Roach, BrownsWire (USA Today affiliated) indicates Tyronne is worth a look in this write up where he advocates for 5 players who earned a roster spot on the Browns with their summer camp and preseason play:

"There is no such thing as too many quality offensive linemen in the NFL especially when one of your tackles has missed significant time in recent years. Tyrone Wheatley Jr. has dominated in the preseason so far and obviously, it’s against lesser competition but it is promising to see.

Wheatley Jr. is a big powerful tackle that has no issues moving defensive linemen in the run game. PFF has given Wheatley Jr. a 95.6 run-blocking grade which is insanely good.

In 66 pass-blocking snaps he has allowed only three total pressures and letting Bill Callahan work with Wheatley he could provide solid depth on the offensive line."

I like the thinking, at least. Pats are trying to get away with converted Guards playing RT (Sow, Mafi, Onwenu?); at worst they’re bringing in a (more athletic) TE who’s converted to Tackle. Per @ReggiesRacquet, I too believe this must mean Rieff is not in the picture anytime soon.

Surprising move to me.

I guess JJ Taylor is making the team as the third RB

I think the pick up a new running back off waivers because why not. You can always go back to Harris if newbie doesn’t work out

I'm not sure it has much to do with Reiff's injury. He didn't look like he was cutting it at tackle (too slow) and has been playing guard for most of camp. McDermott looked bad as well and Anderson is still out with an illness. They simply lacked competent bodies. Now they have one.

This seems like a great move to me. They get a tackle who hasn't done much yet but has upside for a running back who has mostly disappointed. At this point, Taylor seems to offer as much as Strong and, in general, running backs are relatively easy to come by compared to tackles.

Lazar on Strong after Friday's game:

Strong's skillset is the most intriguing blend of speed and elusiveness out of the "other" backs on the roster. Harris has managed only 46 yards after contact and three missed tackles forced on 25 attempts this preseason. He's a straight-line power back and nothing extraordinary as a ball carrier.
As for Strong, the home run speed and elusiveness flash in the open field, like when he weaved through the defense for a positive play on a screen pass in Friday night's loss. However, other than when he's schemed into space on screens or tosses, Strong doesn't seem to find open space often enough, leaving yards on the field.

Strong certainly flashed the explosiveness, but I'm guessing that he just hasn't picked up the system as well as they would like. Wheatley sounds like he might have upside. Good upgrade at the margins.

When Strong and Tyquan Thornton were picked, I remember reading the Pats has drafted the fastest guy in the draft at each of two positions.

It would be really nice if TT somehow pans out.
