Much more importantly, the Rays get a bonus 3 games at home this weekend. I eagerly await the gnashing of teeth after the Rays sweep that series and then go on to edge out the Sox for the playoffs by one game.

Has this ever happened before?

Charleston River Dogs, 2002 is one example (done on purpose).

I seem to remember longer ago there was a MLB game that was suspended and resumed a day or two later without any fans in attendance, which is different tho....

I still don't know why they didn't just move it to WSH. It's going to be weird playing in front of nobody

Surreal. I can't remember the last time this has happened. Wonder what adjustments they'll make inside the park (e.g. public address announcer, in-game entertainment, etc).

I think it will be weirder playing with the sirens, the helicopters and the smoke from burned out cars and buildings in the air

Happens fairly often in Russia and its former Soviet states.

Playing in Washington is a non-starter I'm sure for Angelos.

it would be cool if ESPN or MLBN simulcast the local broadcast of the game

I am never in favor of taking way home games during the regular season...don't Rays-O's play a few more series at Camden?  why not schedule more double headers

The White Sox-Orioles game will be played at 2 p.m. with no fans in attendance. An MLB spokesman told ESPN's Outside the Lines the league is not aware of any other time a regular-season MLB game has taken place, on purpose, without spectators allowed. http://es.pn/1DINKVW

I cant imagine Lerner would have been much more open to it unless he got a good financial deal.  Not much love lost between Lerner and Angelos

I would think they are swapping this series and moving a later series at the Trop to Camden to balance out home games. Is that not the case?

This happened before - in 1978, on that masterpiece of a TV show called "Fantasy Island" (80s thread trigger warning!).

I think the episode in question was about a dude's fantasy to play professional baseball, and so they recruited a team of nobodies to face a team of real MLB All Stars (like Steve Garvey, who just happened to also be on the Island) and of course started beating them in a series of games.  So they show up to play the final game against the MLB All Stars, but because the owners don't want to be embarrassed by the team of nobodies beating their guys, they buy up all the tickets to the game so that it is played in an empty stadium.

Anyone else remember this episode?

If you strain your ears, you can hear a clap or two from those outside the stadium.

mlbtv still has me blacked out - wtf?  I literally couldn't attend the game if I wanted to, shouldn't the blackout be lifted?

don't mlb.tv blackouts have more to do with watching the local stations than attending the games?

Lots of free souvenirs in the stands, foul ball, HR balls and no one to cheer!  Been a tough day for the vendors too...

It's like golf, except golf crowds still clap when someone makes a shot.
Don't they have to in the event of a pinch hitter or pitching change and whether or not the batter was announced?

#Orioles PR just announced in press box, "For record keeping purposes, today's official paid attendance is zero."

I'm currently unsuccessful in figuring out how to post a video clip from mlb.com, but the clip labeled, "Thorne's Masters Voice" is good fun.

How the hell does no crowd = fast game?

The O's batters saw 112 pitchers, the White Sox saw 115 pitches. Maybe there was a gentleman's agreement that everybody swings if it's close. In the last week the O's haven't seen fewer pitches, but I was too lazy to look further back.

edit: also only 2 walks between the teams, and 16 Ks.

I don't know but obviously MLB has taken the wrong route in trying to speed up games. Just ban fans.

How much time is given between each inning for promos and shit for the fans at the park? 15 minutes?

I would think the teams just want to get out of that entire situation.
I've been thinking about the old baseball saying that "you will see something new every time you go to the ballpark." I have not been disappointed this year. And this game is about the strangest one since disco demolition night.

That stuff is all during the commercial breaks, which they had anyway, as the game was on TV.

And getaway day is an idea, but not in April between teams not eliminated.  And less likely with a day game that was originally scheduled as a night game.

Maybe they all had tickets for the Aquarium?

There have been MLB games without spectators where it wasn't done on purpose?

(Just an unnecessary extra qualifier, I know...at least I think.)
