* No corresponding move yet, but it could be Mookie Betts going back to Pawtucket for more regular playing time, or Allen Craig to the DL if his ankle doesn't test well.

* This might be a temporary assignment, with Kelly Johnson due to come off the 15-day DL as early as Tuesday.

* The Sox entered today with 37 players on the 40-man, so there's plenty of space to add Brown.

* Brown's spot on the 40-man will likely be vacated at season's end when the Sox DFA him in order to protect prospects for the Rule 5 draft. Were he to go unclaimed he'd likely become a minor league free agent and could re-sign with the club.

I was just reading the Rusney Castillo thread and someone said we won't sign him because we have too many good OFs.  Then we call up Corey Brown.  :\

I'd like to sign Rusney and stock up on talent and use some of the excess OFs to trade for pitching.  I had high hopes for Corey Brown as a smart deep-depth signing this year as a nice back-up bat vs. Rs but he's been bad this year.  Nice for him to make some extra money for the few days that he's up here, must be a nice bonus if you're a long-suffering minor leaguer to get some extra $.

He's still in line for some extra money once he heads back down to Pawtucket. For players on the 40-man the minimum minor league salary is $82,000/year, which I suspect will be a pretty nice raise for him on a prorated basis ($455.56 per day, since ballplayers are paid on a 180-day season calendar). Not nearly as nice as the $2,777.78 he'll make daily while in the majors, but still.

For those too lazy to look it up, Corey Brown is a 28 year old lefty outfielder who has posted a .226/.294/.452 line in Pawtucket.  Pretty much the definition of AAA filler, having been at that level every year since 2010 (nearly 2,000 PAs across three organizations).

Sound defense at all 3 OF spots is his hallmark. Excellent range, gets Drew-like reads off the bat, and a decent-enough arm. A great athlete and a former 1st-round pick, but he was never able to put it together at the plate.

Well, that sure didn't last long. He struck out in his only AB on Wednesday in Cincinnati, spent the 9th inning in RF on Thursday vs Houston, and pinch-ran for Ortiz in the 8th yesterday.

Steven Wright called up for bullpen depth. Corey Brown designated for assignment.

Well, the Sox needed to make a move to purge some of the excess of players whose last name begins with B, which before today made up 25% of the 40-man roster.

Yes but the upgrade he provided on the base paths in that 8th inning cannot be understated.

True. Then again, a two-toed sloth with partial paralysis would have been an upgrade over Ortiz.

A minor league note worthy of a main board mention...

Brown cleared waivers and rejoined the PawSox tonight for Henry Owens' start. It was knotted at 2-2 until Corey went deep with 1 out in the b-9th for the walk-off win. It's his team-leading 17th HR of the year.

Credit to Jillian Souza for the killer pic.
