The deadline to tender contracts is a half hour away, but already a lot of players have been set free. Might be some that the Sox are interested in.
MLB Trade Rumors has a Non-Tender Tracker with all the names.
Cishek might be a good option for a 7th-inning power arm, and is from Falmouth, so maybe he'd choose to come here if the money was the same as elsewhere. He wasn't looking good with the Marlins, but like every pitcher ever, he got better with the Cardinals. Maybe they fixed him. He surely will try to get a job as a closer, but might not find anyone willing to give him that role and pay him more money than the $6.65 million he got last year. We could give him the money, but not the role.
Greg Holland is free now but won't pitch until 2017.
Henderson Alvarez is also hurt, but he is also only 25. He likely won't end up in Boston though, as he would want a rotation spot as soon as he is able to pitch.
Yusmeiro Petit and Juan Nicasio are other bullpen arms that are now available. As is Al Albuquerque, who has a great name and who our GM should know very well.
None of the hitters who were nontendered seems like a good fit for Boston. Chris Carter and Pedro Alvarez hit homers, but we are full up with DHs right now. Ike Davis used to be a pretty good hitter, but again, we don't really have a role for him.
