Non-tenders-- any of interest to the Red Sox?

The deadline to tender contracts is a half hour away, but already a lot of players have been set free. Might be some that the Sox are interested in.

MLB Trade Rumors has a Non-Tender Tracker with all the names.

Cishek might be a good option for a 7th-inning power arm, and is from Falmouth, so maybe he'd choose to come here if the money was the same as elsewhere. He wasn't looking good with the Marlins, but like every pitcher ever, he got better with the Cardinals. Maybe they fixed him. He surely will try to get a job as a closer, but might not find anyone willing to give him that role and pay him more money than the $6.65 million he got last year. We could give him the money, but not the role.

Greg Holland is free now but won't pitch until 2017.

Henderson Alvarez is also hurt, but he is also only 25. He likely won't end up in Boston though, as he would want a rotation spot as soon as he is able to pitch.

Yusmeiro Petit and Juan Nicasio are other bullpen arms that are now available. As is Al Albuquerque, who has a great name and who our GM should know very well.

None of the hitters who were nontendered seems like a good fit for Boston. Chris Carter and Pedro Alvarez hit homers, but we are full up with DHs right now. Ike Davis used to be a pretty good hitter, but again, we don't really have a role for him.

Craig Stammen from the Nats is expected to be healthy after missing last year with a torn flexor tendon. He might be worth considering as a bullpen arm.

I really like Petit as a long man/spot-starter type, but I'm wary of guys who've pitched well in the cavernous parks of the NL West coming to the AL East and he may be looking for a chance to start.

Nicasio had a big velocity bump last year and K'd 10/9 but his control was terrible. Missed some time, but it was only an abdominal strain. Looks like a pretty decent reliever but I'm not sure who we would be willing to bump.

Too bad there isn't a worthwhile lefty in the bunch.

Why exactly would we need a lefty with Ross & Layne on the roster? Koji kills them, too.

I'd love to give Cishek a shot, but not at a 6m commitment. I wonder what it'd take to reel him in on a reclamation contract.

Petit or Stammen would be good gets for their spot start and multiple inning capabilities.

Petit got John McNamara level-usage last year. He would go 6 days or more in between appearances regularly (happened 12 times last year).
I wouldn't say he was buried due to ineffectiveness necessarily, but he really seemed like a break glass kind of guy who is the rare breed of someone who pitches in a remote NL pitchers park. Most relievers get cranky if they don't get action for 4 days.

Steve Cishek. Cape Cod native, throws gas, not too far removed from being a pretty dominant closer. Since we are well past the discussion of the luxury tax, give him $2 or $3 million and see if he can get healthy.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Sox sign Henderson Alvarez to a 2-year guaranteed deal at low money plus a club option for a third year at decent money. He would make a pretty good successor to Buchholz, if his shoulder recovers.
