I would never Ina million years hire Dan Quinn. Never. I especially wouldn’t do it if the goal were to win back a disgusted fan base. Kind of a stunning misfire by the Commies committee.

Hiring Dan Quinn and Raheem Morris over Belichick or Carroll or even Vrabel because of control or staffing differences of opinion kind of feels like using an easy bake over instead of a convection oven to bake a cake because the Easy Bake Oven is easier to fit in the house.

Besides Pete Carroll, Mike Vrabel, and BB?
Yes, because they did not interview those guys at all. To go back to them after the 6-8 other guys they interviewed either took jobs or stayed put would look incredibly desperate. Let's see who is on his staff, should be interesting.

Chiefs, if Reid decides to retire
I had that but must have deleted it before posting. I think it matters if he has someone in-house. If he wins and retires, who is taking over? The Bears guy or Spags?

I'd add Bills and Raiders. And probably remove the NYJ given Rodger's return.
Raiders just hired Pierce who seemed to do well and is highly respected by some key players. Would be surprised if they dump him after 1 year

Salah, if the Jets don’t make the playoffs with Rodgers has to be on the hot seat.

Spags was awful in his previous go around as HC. I would think they’d want an offensive guru to continue their current structure or (if looking to maximize the Mahomes window) bring in one of the proven unemployed veterans

It would be an ideal situation for Carroll/Belichick/Vrabel to step into and they could keep competing for and winning super bowls for another 5 years or so with any of those guys.

I bet it's Nagy. Also poor in his previous HC gig but you keep continuity with Mahomes and Spags stays where he excels. I also doubt Reid really goes away. He'd be an advisor or something. Bringing in an outsider really isn't necessary for them, unless Plan A (above) fails badly.

If Reid does retire, seems like the Chiefs would go internal, they sure as heck aren’t going to hire Belichick.

So, any word on how much Kraft still owes Bill next year?

Don’t think so - I also think more people know the nuclear launch codes than know Bill’s salary, and it doesn’t benefit them to leak it so not holding my breath that we find out how much Bill made annually.

Omg Reid has Mahomes in his prime for the next decade, why on earth would her retire?????
I don't get it either, but he'll be 66 next month. There have only been 5 coaches in history that have coached past 70.

I think this is where the rumors are coming from as I haven't read anything from him suggesting it at all. "Going out on top" if he wins the SB.

They are going to have to cart Reid's dead body out of Arrowhead when he's dead. The dude loves coaching more than anything except maybe cheeseburgers. He doesn't want to do anything else.

That's a good list of potential open jobs next season, but I'd add in Pittsburgh and Buffalo. Short of a good playoff run for either I can't see them just doing the same thing over and over again. And Buffalo may need a reboot due to cap issues and I could see them wanting someone other than nimrod at the helm for that.

He's not exactly a paradigm of health and he may be very happy to sit in a booth on Sundays and celebrate his creation from afar. But who knows. I don't think Reid has said anything about any of this. There's a bit of wishcasting from some becuase it would be an obstacle for Mahomes to overcome and Reid wouldn't surpass BB in wins.

This is what Reid said about retirement prior to their playoff game vs Miami:

“I haven’t even thought about that,” Reid said. “I’m thinking about one thing. I figured that would come up when you guys were asking these questions, because I’m old. But not that old.”

Ravens promote linebackers coach Zach Orr to DC / nfl.com
Allegedly to keep him from following Macdonald to Seattle.

So Seattle hires Leslie Frazier as Assistant Head Coach. Smart hire, gives Macdonald some experience to work with.

Word on Kliff is he's going to WAS.
Speculation that WAS is going to be very aggressive trying to get to 1 for the hometown kid Caleb Williams

Interesting. I wonder if this makes it more likely Chicago takes MHJ if they are picking #2. That would obviously benefit NE.

If the Bears are not taking a QB at 2, they are trading the pick. MHJ would have to be the second coming of Jerry Rice to be worth the haul they would be forfeiting for not trading the pick if they're keeping Fields as their QB.

they going to trade the one for 2 and then trade the 2 again when they could get MHJ? Why? They already have the 9.

Probably. I could see Minnesota trading up. Or maybe the NYG. But I don't think it's crazy that they would stay either if they think they'll miss out on their preferred WR and they look at next year's draft and don't see the same skill position talent.

Yes, there are a number of WRs in the draft, and you can be as wrong about who the best one will be as you can be right. The Pats have certainly proved that over the years.

For sure. There may be a question if Daniels is actually a top three pick, but there seems to be broad consensus that Williams and Maye are top of the draft talents. If the Bears are not taking a QB in this draft, they are most certainly going to extract as much as possible from the teams trying to go up to take one of those two guys. The Vikings, Giants, Raiders, Broncos, Falcons, Titans (the new people might not be fans of Levis) are among the teams that might be looking to move up to take one of these guys, especially since the QB class in next year's draft is supposed to be thin.

Honestly, if the Bears are dealing and the Pats aren't sold on Daniels, I hope the Pats would look at what it might cost to go to one (or two if the Bears go down one).

If Kliff gets this job, the likelihood of Maye falling to should go up. If I understand correctly, Drake Maye is not really a good scheme fit for what Kliff likes to do.
FWIW, on Patriots Unfiltered Emergency podcast yesterday, Evan Lazar suggested that, of the three top QBs in this draft, Drake Maye is the one that best fits what AVP ran with Stefanski in Cleveland the last few years. Which is not to say Daniels couldn't, or that AVP will look to run a scheme identical to the one he ran in Cleveland, just that Maye is an ideal "run the pick up to the podium" fit for that scheme.

And the previous iteration of the team went down that route when they hired Lombardi. Would only have to cycle through a few head coaches after that to end up with the next Joe Gibbs.
Does that make BB George Allen?
So the majority of HC hires had defensive backgrounds. Just like nobody thought would be the case.

Was the story about Williams’ team telling the Bears not to draft him true? I try not to follow that drama but this makes me think it might matter

University of Washington to be DC had to be read three times by me and I already knew this news. My brain went haywire with District of Columbia. The “to be” is not enough verbal distance to clear those cobwebs

Whether or not we think Steve brought something good to the table defensively--and we don't really know--it's probably a good thing overall for Mayo to have a clean break from Bill even if it means we stand a greater chance of taking a step backwards defensively.

(note: I haven't heard anything about Brian Belichick and have even less of an idea what he does/did)

I think we know. He was the playcaller, that alone tells you a ton. Also ex-players like McCourty have talked about his role during the week. To be honest it sounds like he was more important than Mayo to that defense (playcaller, scheme implementation guy, etc.).

What has McCourty said about Steve other than that story about how "I don't know what the fuck I'm doing"? I'm not finding anything online.

Beyond that, I hear what you're saying about the playcaller piece and agree in the abstract -- Steve always seemed to be more the face of the defense than Mayo, whose role wasn't particularly defined to the outside world. But I'm still not sure we know how much of Steve's coaching is Steve versus his father. Or, how much of the respect that Steve commanded in the room was due to the fact that the players just assumed whatever he was saying was effectively coming from Bill. I have to also think that dynamic was something Mayo et al were considering this season were they to retain Steve going forward.

No, he talked about how Mayo would get up and give an overview of the plan, but Steve was the guy who would break out assignments, execution etc.

LAzar mentions it here, though no link to the piece, I think I also heard him talk about it on a podcast I think. View: https://twitter.com/ezlazar/status/1754515974085021898

No there was a story about how at the very beginning of Steve’s career he admitted to not really know what he was doing.
