Apparently there's a (funny) rumor having Hoyer going to Texans for Andre Johnson. LOL.

Are we really doing this again? RT @FFB_Commish: @AlbertBreer Any legs to a rumored trade of Brian Hoyer to Texans for Andre Johnson?

Apparently BB sought out Cary Williams after the game and they "hashed" it out. I thought why would BB do that, who'd most likely just ignore opposing players who mouthed off.

Then I looked up Williams' contract. Next year (last year of his contract), he carries a $8.2m cap hit but only $1.6m in dead money in 2015, making him a likely cap casualty:

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/cary-williams/

I wouldn't be surprised if BB is already doing his advanced scouting work by 1) seeking Williams out and 2) telling him that he had "respect" for the CB.

Next year BB will be looking for quarters in the couch cushions to pay Revis--and he has so many corners (with Butler) that he's thinking about making Arrington a safety.

I'm also in the Team Pay Revis*, but ironically if Butler, Ryan, Dennard all continue to make progress, the blow of not having Revis would be cushioned somewhat.

* As it'll leave the team w/o a true #1 corner despite the depth.

How much would you give for a ProBowl right guard? 6'8" 300 Alex Boone may be available. Still holding out, and all are getting irritable.. Second-round pick? Plus you have to pay him. Probably wants Mankins money but would take less (no leverage).
I'd do it.  That interior would all of a sudden be shored up.  Solder-Mankins-Connolly-Boone-Vollmer would be a very solid OL with Cannon as your swing tackle and either Devey or Kline as your guard/center backup on game days.

I think we've learned that Mankins' contract for Guards is not a smart move, especially if you're also giving up a premium pick to do so. I'll pass.

Boone can play tackle, too - he filled in for Joe Staley a game or two last year. Some team that needs help at OT is probably going to value him highly.

EDIT: Just 1 game, a 23-13 win over St. Louis. PFF graded him poorly as a run blocker (-1.6) but +1.3 pass-blocking, as he held Robert Quinn sackless.

Any extra money we have is best spent on making Revis a Patriot for the next four years. If we dedicated a single dollar to upgrading at a position of relative strength, as opposed to backing up the Brinks truck for #24 I suspect I wouldn't be the only pissed off Pats fan.

Colt Lyerla, on whether he regrets trying to  hurdle a CB during a non-contact drill Aug 2, blowing out his MCL/PCL:
"No, because I know I can make that play 9 times out of 10. I had to prove a point."
OK, point taken.

On the plus side,  I am sure he gets some really high quality drugs to take the edge off, and for Lyerla that is a big win

Yeah, I think it is best if Johnny sits for a bit.  Cleveland starts with:

@ Pittsburgh
New Orleans
Baltimore
Bye
@ Tennessee

It would not surprise me to see Manziel start against the Titans.  He avoids three pretty tough games and then will have extra time with the bye week to prepare.

Pettine gets MAD respect from me for naming Hoyer as Week 1 starter despite sucking as bad as a QB can suck in the first two pre-season games. Aside from Manziel's off field antics after the draft he's reportedly been late for FOUR meeting during camp which is unacceptable for any player....much less for any rookie....and ridiculously outrageous for the QB who has to be the leader of your offense if not your team.

Pettine said it best at his presser, "Johnny has some things he needs to work on." It is a little comical hearing Hoyer answer questions about how he "earned" the job. What did he do have his buddies take Manziel out at night?

Pettine to player late for meeting: "If I was my father you'd be standing there explaining what was so much more important than your teammates."
Player (horrified): "But coach, that would be humiliating!"
Pettine: "Now you know why I'm so twisted."

I'm fascinated to wait and see how the Cleveland fan base would react. I can't project what things will be like for JF if he is mediocre or worse, but if/when the train wreck commences it'll be a jolly good show.

Another injury to a player thought to make an impact for Denver.

For the second consecutive week, the Broncos likely lost a key player. Jordan Norwood, who appeared to have the team made as the sixth receiver and starting punt returner, injured his left knee on a passing play while covered by Houston's Brandon Harris. Norwood walked into the Broncos' facility on crutches and sporting a heavy brace. There's concern that he tore his anterior cruciate ligament, which would sideline him indefinitely.

Mike Klis confirms that Norwood tore his ACL.

Jordan Norwood has torn ACL. Ends what would have been one of NFL's best comeback stories of preseason.

So nice of Blount to hold off until signing with another team.

Tomlin can be amusing in his own right, but it's at times like this that I really miss Cowher as HC.

On this one, I suspect, we'll be spared our blizzard of posts on the stupidity of the NFL punishing weed transgressions. This is too delicious.

The DUI makes it different, otherwise any suspension for more than two games is really not defensible.

From what I've heard, hope our offensive weapons are a bit more discreet with their after hour usage.

It wasn't even an ounce. And where's the exception if you're name sounds so close to blunt, if you happen to be in a state stuck in the past.

Hope the Steelers drop Blount because of this and we sign him back LOL.  I hated to see him go, and am still surprised we didn't sign him considering how little he got from Pittsburgh

I don't know what's surprising about this team churning over talent at RB--Blount, Woodhead, Law Firm, they're all the same....

They would have been better off beating their wives/girlfriends. Only would have missed two games....

I'm still horrified by the Rice suspension and the reaction he got on the practice field. Both guys probably miss the first month and come back. If you know that your company doesn't allow you to smoke then why do it? Yes it's stupid that in the eyes of the NFL it seems that if you're caught using adderall or pot that it's an automatic 4 games but beating up your wife is a minor offense. But the rules are the rules. If you're making millions why risk losing it over pot?

Of course it's still stupid for players to get caught with pot given the stakes.

Its amazing he went as high as he did.  There are the off the field concerns (rolled up bill), the leadership concerns and then the concerns on how his game will translate to the NFL given his smaller stature.  But he goes 22 and the Browns actually trade up to get him.

I can understand what they see in the 'best case scenario', assuming all those concerns are addressed in the Shanahan offense he could be a great fit because his speed can be utilized with their bootleg / misdirection system.  But even then, I think the number of hits this guy can absorb in his NFL career is pretty low, the guys not even 6 feet and weighed 207 at the combine.  I cant think of many running QBs that were able to last that long who were around that size.

Edit: I guess there are a few comps that weighed right around 200.  Steve Young was 6 2, Vick was 6 and Fran Tarkenton was 6 feet as well.  I have no clue how Tarkenton lasted until he was 38 and was a starter the whole time.  There is no chance that Manziel will be anywhere close to what Young was as a passer which give Young a lot of space to run and not get demolished, although his running style was pretty risky at times.  Manziel also doesnt have anything close to the speed and agility that Vick has/had.

Based on looks only he also seems a bit soft and judging only from the game vs Detroit he sure wasn't outrunning the defense. I'm on phone right now, but did he have combine numbers to justify the Fran Tarkenton comparisons?

What #s?  I was looking at height and weight.  Pro football reference has Tarkenton has 6ft 190lbs and at the combine Manziel was 5 11 and 3/4s and 207lbs

I was wondering about his speed/3 cone/shuttle scores. Now back on computer I see he has good speed for a QB, though not great. He did have the best 3 cone score among QBs at the combine, though, which I presume maybe speaks to a "Tarkenton-like" escapability.

Trouble in BillsTown: http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/11388146/doug-marrone-upset-buffalo-bills-lack-discipline

Bills coach Doug Marrone blew up at his players on Thursday, sending a message that he's fed up with too many fights and post-whistle shoving matches during practice.

Following an intense fight near the end of Wednesday's practice, a few small scuffles broke out early in the Bills' morning practice Thursday. Marrone quickly put an end to it.

Marrone lined players up on one sideline and ripped into them for fighting. At one point, defensive end Jerry Hughes talked back to Marrone, leading to more shouting from Marrone in Hughes' direction, questioning him about whether he wanted to stay on the team.

I can't imagine someone talking back to BB, Harbaugh, etc.

Marrone should spend less time yelling at players (seriously, isn't that what an ex-player assistant coach like Pepper Johnson is for?!) and more time trying to get EJ Manuel's head out of his ass because if Manuel doesn't, Marrone is going to be out of a job at the end of the season.

Jerry Hughes isn't the worst of it. An undrafted DL started the fight with the Bills starting center - after starting one earlier in camp with the backup center.

So, he's going to get cut soon. Is there any way we can send him and Pollard to hang out with the J-E-T-S through the final cutdown?

The biggest difference is Tarkenton was intelligent.  Manziel is a total cement head.
