Jaylon Johnson & the Bears agree to a new deal. Johnson was tagged 2 days ago, but rumor was that negotiations were going well. And they were.

Johnson gets 4 years/$76m with $43.8m fully guaranteed, $28m of that in the first year.

It's the 3rd highest guarantee for a cornerback: 1. Ward $44.5m, 2. Lattimore $44.3m, 3. Johnson $43.8, 4. Ramsey $43.7m.

The construction is very team friendly. The Bears have the space this year & will still have ~$49m after this deal. The lower cap numbers over the remainder provide room to maneuver or more readily cut him. (The exact annual breakdown isn't public yet.)

Big congrats to Johnson. Dude placed a huge bet on himself and it has paid off. He's also still just 24 and might have a shot at another big contract.

Bears sign Kevin Byard for 2yrs/$15m. No breakdown of the deal report but some make it sound like it’s largely guaranteed money with some significant bonuses built in.

The Bears cut Eddie Jackson last month and saved $13m ($5m in dead cap). Byard had a better statical season some advanced measures and comes in at about half the Jackson savings.

Chicago with another ~$42m in room (that accounts for draft picks). Watch for them to run at Ridley and be engaged with several of the edge rushers.

didn't see him on TEN this year, but Byard really slipped this year for PHI, age 30. A better value than Jackson, but might not be the solution they expect at FS (especially in year 2)

The fact that Russ will be the best QB on the team says more about the Steelers' QB room than it does Russ.

The Steelers drafted Pickett with the 20th overall pick. There were plenty of dummies - on this site included - that used 20/20 to shit on the Pats for drafting Mac 15th overall. I'll be waiting for that same vitriol towards the Steelers.

The Fields market is shrinking, unless teams already know he's headed to ATL.

Kind of feel for Pickett. He seems much less insufferable than Mac.

Rumors are that the Falcons prefer Cousins & Fields is their plan b.

I just think Fields is not that exciting to teams & they know they can wait on Chicago to drop the asking price as the draft approaches.

If Chicago would take a 4th or 5th rounder for Fields, which allowed us to trade back and load up on 1st and 2nd round 2024/2025 picks, which would then allow us to draft a Nix/Penix type along with a stud WR and some high OL prospects this year, while building draft depth for 2025, I’d do it.

Why bother with Fields in this scenario and not just go with a Brissett?

Potential.

Edit: This is Fields’ age 25 season, Brissett’s age 32. And Fields would be cheaper this year, and if he’s more expensive next year, it’s because he earned it.

That’s not a knock against Brissett, which is the direction I think they will move.

I can’t think of too many worse allocation of resource scenarios than to trade picks for Fields and then draft Nix

You’ll head into 2025 draft having spent a 4th (Fields), 2nd (Nix) and whatever kings random you need to maneuver up in the 2025 class for an actual franchise QB prospect

If you’re trading for Fields, it makes no sense to draft a QB. He’s your guy for 2024. And you hope he takes a massive step forward and you pay him 35M a year moving forward. But counting on him to realize that potential seems like a fool’s errand given he’s been mostly terrible. They may as well have kept Mac if they wanted to pin their QB hopes on a 4th year bust who has flashed a tiny bit.

Really odd figuring out what MN is doing. They have a ridiculous amount of receiving talent and won't have a QB in about an hour? Russel Wilson would have made a lot of sense as a plan B but that is out the window.

Probably nothing but Fields started following DK and the Seahawks on Intsta and SEA HC refused to say Geno would be the starter in 24 when asked this weekend.
Wonder if we see some QB musical chairs once the Cousins domino drops.

At least Cousins knows he should continue to play in a dome (plus another dome in New Orleans and good weather in Tampa and Carolina).

Cousins will be 36, just had a major injury, has never won anything and will likely get a 4-year deal. I think it's defensible to walk away from that. But I agree, you need an immediate plan to address QB. If it's a trade up, that seems like a shakey plan.

That is..... a lot of money for a guard. continues the trend of guards getting RT money (can see why Onwenu allegedly wants to be a guard, he's better at it and the money for a very good guard will be better than for an acceptable T)

This.

All of this.

Cousins will be good in Atlanta. He would be nowhere near as good on a team like New England, Pittsburgh, Denver, etc.

Also, he lives in GA, no way he was turning down, the dome team, where he lives, and who has a much better O-line than any of those teams.

Not to mention Bijan, Pitts and London.

if he comes back well from his injury, Atlanta should win that division. They have the Steelers, Seahawks and VIKINGS on their schedule, besides the NFC East and AFC West.

I know the cap is going up but I can't imagine I would ever have a positive reaction to my team signing a free agent RB to this type of deal.
Especially one like Pollard who took a step back last year as a lead guy. But they have Spears as well so should be a decent rotation.

I don't think 8 mil a year in the new cap world is horrible for an RB with relatively few career miles on his legs, but nothing I saw last year with Dallas indicates to me Pollard is one you'd wanna spend that on.

I am fascinated by the Saquon and Derrick Henry free agencies, especially with both Philly and Dallas needing RBs.
