There is also a 1st going to Memphis, but Lowe says it's a heavily protected pick in 2019, not like the potentially UNPROTECTED pick the C's got from the Grizz.
Most firsts are potentially unprotected after a certain point, because you can only protect so far. (The alternatives are vanishing picks, like the protection on our 2017 2nd if we swap, or conversions to 2nds, like the Minnesota pick this year.) The odds of the Memphis pick being unprotected are vanishingly small given the nature of the protection on it.

Sure, but in this case there's a pretty big difference between the vanishing/conversion 1st rounder and the lotto pick Boston will be getting from a Memphis team that appears to be on the cusp of a rapid downward spiral.

I imagine part of the reason the deadline was so boring was because the cap is going to jump up so much. So many teams are going to have cap space at the end of the season that they don't feel that much pressure to improve their team right now, because they have convinced themselves that they can get better by luring a free agent. That created a belief that you didn't have to really make a move unless you got a top level offer. I think it is telling that only a couple teams (Orlando, Phoenix, Detroit) were really active over the last few days, everyone else was content to stay put.

I don't think this is accurate at all. Charlotte was very active as was Houston looking to move Howard, Beverly and Jones, Atlanta was fielding calls on Horford and Teague, the Knicks were looking for backcourt help, Toronto was after frontcourt help, the Clippers were working Stephenson deals for three days, Chicago with Gasol and getting under the tax, and I'm sure I'm missing others. There was a ton of activity but like most deadline years not a whole lot of big deals going down. It sure wasn't from lack of trying or teams not looking to make changes......it's hard to find two parties (sometimes three) to agree on a deal where they both feel they are getting the best of it based on their goal.

Expiring contracts have value in a cap-space-poor environment. These are also the grease on the wheels of trade deadline moves. It is entirely reasonable to say lack of deals is related to cap mechanics.

yup pretty ridiculous, I bet they look into that, and allow a provisional waive or something.Love Jakarr's effort and personality but am pretty shocked the guy at the bottom of the sixers bench got a multiyear deal.

I think this is going to be more of the trend moving forward with the escalating salary cap and now 15-man rosters. You can sign an athletic upside guy dirt cheap for multiple guaranteed year with a small sunk cost.......with the benefit of that player developing into a Will Barton-type who you now have in your rotation for multiple years at or near a minimum salary. It's a win for the unproven player who receives multiple years of guaranteed salary and NBA life while being a win for the team if/when that player progresses to his potential with very low downside of a tiny salary at the end of the roster. Kinda similar to the contracts going out to the 2nd round picks these days.

Second year is non-guaranteed it's basically a free look for Denver (who is terrible too) with upside if he develops.
