Hometown: Venice, FL

Ranked #296 in Baseball America's Top 500 he signed with the Red Sox instead of heading off to LSU. Longhi who was born in Massachussets, grew up a Red Sox fan.

For pro scouts, he's a corner bat prospect as the rare righthanded-hitting, lefthanded-throwing corner outfielder. Longhi has good raw power from the right side, but scouts debate his knack for hitting and ability to catch up to good velocity. He frequently hit in the lower half of a stacked Venice lineup. He's a below-average runner who could be limited to left field or first base down the line in spite of his strong arm. Scouts who believe in Longhi's bat see him as a potential top-five-rounds pick

Outfielder that projects to hit for average as well as power. Nice swing with good bat speed. Good arm. Likely to end up in left field. Will also see time at first base. On the young side for a 2013 draftee.

A relatively recent update on Nick Longhi (3/14).

Sleeper: Nick Longhi, Projection: Lowell – Though he slipped to the 30th round in the 2013 draft due to signability concerns, Longhi still received the fourth highest bonus of any 2013 Red Sox draftee. Longhi is a below-average runner and profiles best at first base or left field, both positions where his bat will have to carry him. Reports on his bat coming out of his senior year of high school were mixed, however, as he struggled, especially against solid velocity. He did show raw power potential and a strong arm—he also pitched. If Longhi can show that he can handle professional pitching and his hit tool takes a step forward during spring training, he should have a chance to break camp with Greenville and rise up the prospect ranks.    Source: SoxProspects

Played on my brothers HS team and I've seen him play 100 times! Stud hitter, no doubt. As mentioned, though, his future position will be his biggest question mark

Very promising 18-yr-old season comes to early end MT @nicklonghi25327: Surgery tomorrow. Out for the season. Not best news I've ever gotten

Longhi had reached all 4x on Monday when he suffered hand injury on bases. Hit .330/.388/.440 for Lowell Spinners.

Crap.

Regarding his positions, he'd played both OF corners this season along, and in RF over his last 7 games in the field. Also played 2 G at 1B.

Crap, this isn't good. Supposedly he replied to someone with: "ligament detached from the bone in my thumb and pulled a piece of the bone off with it…". Hopefully he can get better and have another strong year in 2015.

Longhi has since deleted all tweets referencing the injury, presumably at the behest of the Sox front office. Can't have any info floating around out there that might damage the potential trade value of damaged goods, after all.

Promising 18-year-old prospect Nick Longhi underwent season-ending surgery to repair a torn UCL on his thumb on Thursday morning as a result of an injury incurred on a slide on Monday. Longhi was hitting .330/.388/.440 with 11 extra-base hits, 11 walks and 22 strikeouts in 30 games with Lowell before suffering his injury. It remains to be seen whether his recovery will permit him to take part in fall instruction league.

It's been a month since his thumb surgery, and while his recovery is reportedly going just fine he isn't quite able to lift a liquid-filled 10-gallon cooler over his head. So today his Spinners teammates went to great heights to help him complete the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

He struggled to start the year but since the beginning of May he is slashing .285/.348/.417 in 159 PA. In the month of June, including his 1/2 today, he is slashing .288/.345/.547 in 59 PA with 8 doubles, 2 HRs. It's easy to overlook he is still 21 years old and in AA. Even more so since he got off to a terrible start. If he develops any type of power, he could actually be a decent prospect.

April .182/.194/.288 67 PA, 1 double, 2 HR
May .290/.353/.376 102 PA, 5 double, 1 HR
June .288/.345/.547 59 PA, 8 doubles 2 HR

I know I just updated this one but he had another HR the other day.

Since May 1st, his line is now .297/.355/.462 on a .336 BAbip. 173 PA, 12bb/26k, 14 doubles, 4 HRs.
His last 14 games and 60 PA: .352/.407/.685 with a .356 BAbip. 4bb/6k, 3 HRs, 9 doubles.

Again, he doesn't turn 22 until August. While he wasn't special last year, he did have 40 doubles, 3 triples and 2 HRs last year as a 20 year old in 535 PA. The 40 doubles suggests he could grow into some HR power and given he's hit 3 HRs in the last 11 games and is only one short of his career high in 249 less PA, it might have started to happen.

Traded to the Reds for International signing pool space, per the Red Sox official twitter.
