We have a trade. RT @nickeatman: Cowboys add CB Justin Green from Patriots by trading DT Ben Bass http://bit.ly/1szJrv5

OXNARD, Calif. – The Cowboys have already made a move to bolster the cornerback position after learning of Orlando Scandrick’s four-game suspension.

The team has traded for cornerback Justin Green in a move with the Patriots, who received defensive tackle Ben Bass in return.

Green (5-10, 200) spent last year with the Patriots both on the practice squad twice with a two-game stint on the active roster. Green joined New England as a rookie free agent in 2013 out of Illinois.

Green will join a cornerback position including Brandon CarrMorris ClaiborneSterling Moore,B.W. Webb and Terrance Mitchell, until Scandrick returns in Week 5.

Bass made the Cowboys’ roster in 2012 as an undrafted free agent from Texas A&M who played two games as a rookie. Last year he suffered through injuries that landed him on IR without playing a game.

This year, the defensive tackle has been hobbled with hamstring issues and didn’t practice much here in training camp.

Green is okay, nice stop-gap acquisition for the Cowboys and no real loss for the Pats. Curious what the Pats see in Bass, if anything -- potential IR guy for another year?

Bass is undersized for the power forward position, is a streaky shooter, and just isn't that good at basketball.

He definitely fills a need. There was a need for Bass on the NE sports scene with the recent loss of Mike Carp.

I thought Green was OK last year but if he's been passed by Butler he doesn't really have any place here. Good trade for him, good chance he get a real shot in Dalas

Per this blog piece from 2012, Bass is a guy who has good physical tools (6'4", 285 lbs) of a 3-4 DE but had a rocky career at Texas A&M, leaving the program and then re-qualifying academically before going undrafted. The Cowboys liked his work ethic and he played a bit before getting hurt. Last season, the Cowboys changed the defensive scheme and Bass got hurt again, so he was IR'ed.

This SB/blog piece puts forth the idea that Ben Bass was a hidden gem, based on some preseason, second-half superstar performances, some roster/practice squad shenanigans and Jason Hatcher's quotes about Bass dominating the 'Boys OL in practice (who doesn't?)

Bottom line: Bass has the physical tools, hasn't played much, hasn't been healthy or has been subject to roster shenanigans or both, and is a total lottery ticket unless someone in the Pats organization has inside info OR Jerry Jones was drunk and needed a CB.

To be fair the Cowboys do have a very good OL.  What's more concerning in terms of Bass is that their DL sucks....so no binky here.

And Green is a terrible rebounder who just doesn't seem to have the desire to be great. Fair trade.
