For the Patriots fans who are also Connecticut fans, it was a little solace to get another win in that building. That’s now a Super Bowl and National Championship to help erase the game that shall not be mentioned. DDB Jr. was 8 when I took him to the Super Bowl in 2008, and he was sobbing on the way out. It felt a little like child abuse. He got to go to the game last night to help fill in the student section. Connecticut is now his second team but I am glad he was there.
UConn is now 8-0 in Arizona in the tournament. And 4-0 in that building. They actually got to play a regional final there when Phoenix was auditioning for the final four and wanted to show they had the infrastructure. Much different configuration though — court was in the end zone with big temporary risers on the side.

Not sure about why you bolded those parts, but to explain, yeah, I kind of felt bad taking him to that Super Bowl given the trauma, but I am being tongue in cheek. He got to see a Super Bowl and learn that sports is sometimes painful, but I am still glad he got to go back last night night and see a championship.

Yea I was at that Super Bowl in 2008, both regional games in 2009 and this years final four. Last night did help. The talk of being a wagon and unstoppable made me a bit nervous because of the venue demons. Glad it work out this time.

Cam Spencer was dribbling out the clock late and Hurley wanted him to get moving so he stepped onto the court and nudged him. Ref called it a turnover.
If you had described the play before it happened and asked me to guess the result, I would have guessed T or nothing. Was turnover the correct call? I guess a player in contact with the ball contacted a coach who was standing partially out of bounds?
I thought the ref handled it well and did a nice job of letting Hurley do his annoying things without having rabbit ears in a game that was decided. Curious though what the call actually is. Doesn’t matter other than for curiosity.

After reading some officials forums (holy shit, these guys are something!) and reddit, I believe the call was indeed out of bounds. You're welcome.
It's in the official final stat book as a shot clock turnover. Though that doesn't necessarily mean it shouldn't have been a different type of turnover, just that that's how the stat crew entered it
Interesting. Scorer was confused. There were 12 seconds left. Unless there's some rule that certain conduct means you run the rest of the clock? I think it's more likely that nobody knew what was going on, but according to what I read the call would have to be (1) let it go, (2) technical if the act is judge "unsportsmanlike" or "causing contact that is unnecessary, unacceptable, excessive or extreme during a live or dead ball," or (3) out of bounds. From the replay it does look as though Hurley is still on the line when he touches Spencer and Spencer is in contact with the ball. There seems to be a debate whether this really is out of bounds, but general agreement that the ref did an ok job calling turnover.
You're probably right, especially since it didn't really matter with it being a meaningless turnover seconds before the game ended the stats crew would just be focused on ending the game and getting stats printouts and game books for everyone that wanted them (considering I know how many copies we print for much less important games I can't even imagine how many they're printing for the finals). If it happened earlier in the game they'd probably take some more time to confirm the rule, but since it was about to be a shot clock violation anyway and nothing else besides a turnover was called they probably went with that.
Also, I'm sure uconn didn't care at that point, but calling it out of bounds would require penalizing the player with a turnover, which seems unfair. There's a turnover "other" option on the college software, for more rare or obscure turnover types that they probably should have used and just credited it to the team.
That's pretty interesting. I never thought of that. So when Andrew Hurley comes in all the time at the end of games that are not close and he dribbles out the clock and they turn it over, does he get a turnover, or is that a team turnover? Not that he cares, I'm sure. Connecticut had 8 turnovers last night, which is kind of unusual, but now that I think about it, I guess a few were that kind of end of game turnover stuff that I guess counts statistically but didn't really affect the game.
Shot clock is always a team turnover, or at least it's supposed to be, I've seen a few college games where it was incorrectly credited to the player and never fixed.
NBA and wnba games almost always end up with perfect correct stats, minus the judgement calls that come up on plays like controlled tips, whether the passer or receiver should get a turnover, stuff like that. College games don't have nearly the same accuracy, especially with the things that aren't as important, team rebounds, turnover types etc.
