The Astros made it through the first month of the season only needing their original starting five in the rotation and rank #2 in the AL in ERA... but they've lost Jose Urquidy to shoulder soreness and Luis Garcia to Tommy John surgery this week. Their substitutes for now are 27-year-old Brandon Bielak, who they've shuttled between AAA and the MLB bullpen the past three years, and JP France, who's an uninspiring 28-year-old with control issues and no MLB experience. Teams with a little extra veteran depth in their rotations should have Houston's GM on speed dial.

Another bullet avoided there by Chaim and the front office - quite a few people questioned why the Sox didn't push for Lee as part of their return in the Andrew Benintendi for Franchy Cordero Josh Winckowski trade.

Springs and Baz were already out for the year. Garrett Cleavinger just tore his ACL on a rundown play. Glasnow had to leave his last rehab start with soreness in his side, And now Rasmussen is likely getting TJ surgery.

Brutal luck for Tampa.

Or the natural consequence of the way they handle pitchers. Everyone on their staff throws with max velocity and max spin on every pitch, which gets them great results in the short term, but injured not long after that.

I really don't think that's unique to Tampa, that's pretty much how the entire league approaches pitching at the moment.

It seems to be at a different level in Tampa. Maybe it's just a coincidence that everyone who goes there pitches better than they ever have before and they also lead the league in pitcher injuries. But I suspect there's a strong relationship between the two.

I don't think it's a max effort/velocity thing in TB, they tend to just get pitchers utilizing the pitches they have more effectively, maybe focusing on one in particular. I do think TB is an outlier with having their pitchers assume different roles constantly, they occasionally have someone close a game and then open the next one, and that could be a source of injuries. That doesn't explain the SP injuries though.

In this case, it's also worth nothing that Rasmussen has already had TJ twice before. He was originally drafted by the Rays, but they didn't end up signing him because he needed his second TJ at the time. Before the Brewers traded him to the Rays, they were only using him as a relief pitcher. The larger point about the current environment of pitching injuries stands, but this specifically just really, really sucks for Rasmussen if it does end up going the way of a third TJ.

Reading between the lines I believe Angel settled his lawsuit and part of the deal was he had to leave. At least that’s what I’m hoping for.

On the bright side, Leiter's ERA at AA is more than a run lower than last year. Through his first 30 pro games (all at AA), he's 4-12 with a 5.24 ERA and 5.5 bb/9. The win total is a little unfair (and irrelevant) since they aren't pushing him to go deep, but part of not going deep is the high walk rate and giving up a lot of runs.

I got to watch him 3 times in person last year, and I have to be honest, he wasn't that impressive to me. Velocity is there, but our AA team wasn't exactly an offensive power house, and they teed off on him all 3 times. He kind of feels like a guy who got by against non-pro hitters by just overpowering them, but it hasn't translated at all to the upper minors yet.

I remember Allen from ST as quite fast. Apparently he doesn't hit much. Why do the NYY need him? What's the story on Diego Hernandez?

Allen had an upward mobility clause that required him to be on MLB roster. Per Logan’s Dad.

They had to add him to the MLB roster, that's why BOS had to trade him. That's what the 'upward mobility clause' is. If you mean the Hicks part being surprising, it was inevitable and this was a good time since Allen fills a similar role but better (he can pinch-run for one thing).

Hicks seemed like a star in the making years ago, but never seemed to be able to stay healthy. Is Tapia more valuable at this point?

Four years younger, still employed by a major league team, ahead in WAR by nearly a whole win this season (0.3 vs -0.5)...yeah, Tapia probably is more valuable right now.

It's being reported that Manfred is going to tell Wisconsin that they have to fund the $400 million in improvements to the Brewers field or risk losing the team. I'm sure there will be bogus economic reports that accompany this too. All of the governments need to get together and tell the various sports leagues and billionaire owners to fuck off.

The Milwaukee County Board voted against using public money to fund the renovations to the Brewers stadium.
The Milwaukee County Board Thursday happened to be discussing American Family Field renovations as well. They were united in voicing their objections to using local tax dollars. They unanimously voted to message the Wisconsin Legislature that they’re opposed to using Milwaukee County tax dollars for the stadium renovations.

"Telling the state of Wisconsin, the legislature, that we don't support this. We do not support taxpayers of Milwaukee County having to pay for Am Fam Field renovations, especially with the deferred maintenance and everything else we have going on in this county," Taylor said.

Gov. Tony Evers has proposed a $290 million aid package using state money to renovate the ballpark. But Assembly Speaker Robin Vos has already rejected that plan. He's yet to issue his proposal, but indicated it should include tens of millions each from the city of Milwaukee and Milwaukee County.

Supervisor Sequanna Taylor said she's a big Brewers fan, but she can't get behind using county tax dollars when there are so many other budget holes to fill.
