Is San Diego/Denver REALLY the biggest story of general interest this afternoon?

Cubs no-hitter
Colts thriller
Pats beat Favre w/o Brady

Seems to me that any of those would make more sense. And did he really just say that he doesn't know the phone number for callers?

He just commented on the fact it isnt up on the Sirius website.

Said they will get it up when the station is fully launched.

I THINK what is going on is...XM devotes all of channel 144 to XM exclusive talk... but Sirius channel 123 has some live sports....which I guess there are contract issues regarding...SO....he wont be able to go live with Sirius until the entire channel is programmed with Sirius XM talk...

So looks like I need to try to keep getting XM free trials until Sirius Online is up and running.

Initial impressions...

FAR MORE energy than Mike's show, like comparing your granddad to your 21 year old Uncle.

BUT now that he is national, it of course at least so far is not NY centric.

He is much better with callers( then Mike) so compared to Mike on Fan, it's a slam dunk. Hope he gets a lot of callers that focus on the Yankees and Jets today.

I'd be willing to bet he's working from home with a remote connection...wouldn't be surprised if this was part of the appeal of leaving.
Still, you would think he would have worked out the details of how to take phone calls before he cracked the mic for the first time. And at the very least, he could have the phone number taped to his computer monitor or near the ISDN unit. I mean, PUH-LEASE.

Actually, he did. He said he doesn't like any of the New York teams. He said at some point the Yankees not making the playoffs might be a story, but he also noted he doesn't care about Jeter breaking Gehrig's career Yankee Stadium hits record.

I believe he called it "nonsense".

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman on now as a guest, dropping by the studio. Having microphone troubles right out of the gate.

At least now we know he's not working from his house.

Took them a good minute though to get Bettman mic'd properly...

And now he's onto hockey?
1) He's trying to hit everything

2) The commissioner is a marquis guest...you want him on your first day if you can swing it...if he's available now, you take it

3) Sirius is launching the NHL in October. This may be the highest rated hour of Sports talk radio they'll have until then...may as well promote it

The second "Sports Bite" update was just interrupted by a commercial break.

That's a little... awkward...

Nice, thanks...I wonder if Dog's kids are answering the phones....

Update: Tried that number and got "we're sorry, that number cannot be completed as dialed."

That must have been while I was downloading the effin' media player to my new laptop so I could listen. I was hoping to hear about Yankees Elimination Day plans.

Good job by dog on the impromptu interview w/ Torre.

He's a much better listen solo than Francesca (although that's not a difficult feat).

WTF is with all the fucking Metallica Channel promos during every break? Jesus, this is worse than getting browbeaten by Foxwoods ads or FOX's FrankTV props and "There's Only One October!!" crap.

Is it like this all the time on Sirius XM? Aren't there any other channels for them to promote?

I know that the MLB game coverage has been filled with Metallica promos lately.

XM is running a 24 hour Metallica channel right now. They do this periodically. Next up is AC/DC. I agree that the promos are way too frequent.

The Southside Johnny segment was far too long -- especially for Mad Dog's introductory show to XM/Sirius listeners. If you want to entice the rabbit (i.e. sports fans), having a 60-year-old fringe rock musician on the air for 20 minutes isn't the carrot you should be dangling.

Selig's on now.

Regarding Miller Park: We had no other choice. Needed a venue for two games. Couldn't use Minn (Vikings & U of M football), Tampa (Sox play tonight, couldn't have two games there today with 4 teams), Atlanta (had forecasts of rain), St. Louis (it poured all weekend), L.A. (too far to travel). Milwaukee was the only way to ensure we'd get these games in. By the way, Houston didn't argue about it.

They had issues again today... Russo was already mid sentence when his show started...

They'll iron out the kinks...this is how it was was Stern debuted for about 2 weeks.

Francesa would have hung up on this clown Derek. Frankly, so would I have.

But I definitely enjoy this show more than Francesa solo.

He had Madden on earlier and just got finished with Regis. Not exactly riveting radio, but high-profile guests certainly don't hurt.

If you can listen to Stern via online stream, which is easier to do than bringing my setup in the office, why can't I listen to Mad Dog, or other non-music channels for that matter? Annoying.

I must admit, I've only heard a very small sample size with my power being out due to Hurricane Ike (mainly trips in the car) but my first impression was that there were too many New York callers.

One Yankee fan complaining about A-Rod:

Caller: "Remember when A-Rod left the Mariners and the Mariners went on to win 114 games?"
Mad Dog: "Actually it was 116 and that team lost in the DS to the Yankees, but yea..."
Caller: "Remember when A-Rod left the Rangers and they made the playoffs?"
Mad dog: "That never happened.."

You'd think if people were paying money for Sirius/XM for the sole purpose of sports, they would have some clue as to what they're talking about. I guess that falls on the shoulders of the screeners who let far too many unimportant New York questions go through though.

Remy's on with him now.

Russo opens today's show stating his preference to see the Brewers in the playoffs instead of the Mets.
And Chris absolutely killed the Brewers after they blew a 6-2 lead in the 9th. It's still in extra innings, but he said there's no way they'll recover if they lose this one.
