That's an odd way to report the George Kirby trade (j/k).

If they didn't like him enough to tender him, any return is probably better than nothing. Hoping for some flyers.

Terrible facial hair on this guy. What the hell is even going on with that mustache?

Also, glasses reminiscent of Eric Gagne. Fire Breslow.

In all seriousness, the guy seemed solid in his 28+ innings. 3.32 FIP, 144 ERA+, 10.9K/9... walk rate was high. If he brings that down, he looks like an elite reliever.

Urias made 4.7 million last year. Certainly due a raise for 2024.

I wonder if we are eating some of his 2024 salary

Pretty good return on Urias after a brutal year. Guess they're gonna pursue a free agent to compete with Valdez?

Here's Campbell's minor league numbers.

His walk rate was significantly lower in the minors... 2.8 in 2021, 2.3 in 2022, 2.6 in 2023... jumped to 4.1 in the majors. ERA for those minor league seasons was 2.33 (A+), 1.57 (A+, AA), and 2.62 (AA).

I might of given Urias more of a chance but I get moving on from him. To get a useful reliever for him, I’m pleased.

Boston now has the first Portuguese NBA player and MLB player. Cool.

I liked the Urias pickup but definitely understand the value proposition here. No certainty Urias gets back to his previous numbers. And Valdez can rake, if he can just be less of a butcher…but the MIF prospects are closing in anyway.

But if he was on the mariners 40 man doesn't that mean he goes on ours and thus does not open up a roster spot. Though it is still a useful return for a player that was semi redundant

Campell looks very interesting indeed. I had my fingers crossed on Urias but......I guess there's a plan "B" for 2nd base. I just hope it's not Glayber.

Well we are the closest NBA and MLB teams to Portugal

One of two Isaiahs ever to play in MLB.

The other one was a 1972 Tigers right fielder named Ike Blessit, who went hitless in his five career at bats.

I was optimistic when we got Urias, expecting very good defense and disciplined at-bats. He had a solid OBP, but the defense was really disappointing, at least by the eye test. After watching him for 32 games, I preferred Reyes there, offensively and especially defensively. And Reyes is nothing great, he's basically a Futility Infielder who hit decently in a small sample size.

So no great loss IMO. We can always use another decent pitcher, hopefully we got one.

Now that his Red Sox career is Dead, for one last time, I can say Urias hit the crapper.

If by "elite reliever" you mean "slightly deranged," I'm right there with you. I'm not standing in against that guy, are you?

That's not how arbitration works. There's no agreement between the Red Sox and Urias for 2024. The Mariners just get the right to go through the process with him.

I got to watch him a bunch when he was here for the Mariners' AA team. Not the most impressive "stuff", but he made it work and was really effective, and was a fan favorite who seemed like he had a really solid closer mentality.

I like Urias and expect a bounce back year from him, but I like this deal for the Sox. Campbell also has a ton of team control left.

It’s going to be very tough for me to get over how awful that facial hair is

Haven’t loved the look of a Sox pitcher this much since Rod Beck. He looks like the Yankees reliever in Major League who threw at his own grandma.

Those are damn good numbers besides the crappy walk rate. If Breslow is the pitching specialist everyone makes him out to be, I think this is a sneaky good pick up. Replicate his 2.5ish minor league walk rate and that's a really solid bullpen piece for a non-tender candidate.

We’ll see. Campbell’s slider was one of the best in baseball last year by wOBA allowed and we needed more of that in our pen. But I’m a little surprised and not wild about the move right now.

Fine with putting some faith and playing time in the hands of Enmanuel Valdez but man, I’ll be pretty annoyed if we sign Whit Merrifield.

Nick Senzel’s a former top prospect who’s been interesting in the past before injuries hit. And Joey Wendle had a lost year with the bat, but rates as an exceptional MI defensively. (He was +9 DRS at 2B in 25 games in 2022, which seems…impossibly good.)

Yeah, I mean it's weird to me to cast Urias as a guy who "can't hit 250" when he IS a guy who can give you an on base percentage around 340 and a slugging percentage north of .400. That more than plays at second base. There's been a lot of recency bias in evaluating his seasons which isnt unwarranted given how bad his season was.

Still, I think trading that kind of player for middle relief is generally bad business, but Urias was coming off a really bad year and there's plenty of guys who are about as good as Urias who can compete for the job with Valdez, and relief pitching was a place of concern for us, and this guy has the upside to be a high-leverage reliever.

I wonder if they’re committing to some version of Rafaela at 2B?

I expect Breslow to bring in a strong fielder at 2B/SS and not leave things to Valdez.

Yea I think it boils down to defense. They have to drastically improve up the middle and overall. Second base seems like one of the easier ways to accomplish that. I also could see Duran going to left and committing to Rafaela in center. You do that, add a good glove at second, and all of a sudden you defense looks pretty exciting

we have like 863 middle infield prospects and if they were banking on Urias’ skill set to be anywhere near regular playing time then that represented the most fungible innings of anyone on the roster.

Urias might also be one of those guys who doesn't look as good on your team as his stat line would indicate. It's Hunter Renfroe Syndrome.

I like this trade for both sides.

On paper, I think that arb2 Urias — even after a rough year — is worth more than rookie eligibility Campbell. So for the Mariners, betting on a Urias’ return to form is a good bit of business, especially since I think the incumbents might be the corpse of Kolten Wong and some utility types.

For Boston, they just need more stability (especially on defense) at the position. Reyes gives us a decent floor, Rafaela is tempting for ceiling, and one infers that we may be looking outside the org for a target with more two-way potential to be the main guy at the position. Urias’ possibility of bounce back didn’t add a lot to this picture.

And it’s always helpful to have RP with options hanging around.
