Logan's Roster

One of the strongest memories I have of any film from when I was 9-10 was Logan's Run, and the underlying conceit that people were only allowed to live until 30. This nicely dovetails with Cashman's multi-year plan of culling his thirty-somethings to as few as possible, so I thought it might be entertaining to have an ongoing thread where we track how many guys on the 40 man are over 30 and still allowed to roam Pinstripe Island.

So right now it is at 8:

Holliday (37)
CC (36)
Headley (33)
Gardner (33)
Turncoat Suckboat (33)
Robertson (32)
Little League (31)
Garcia (30)

Four of those eight have deals that expire this year and very likely won't be coming back (possibly CC), three more expire after 2018 and may stick around next season (Gardner, Robertson, even Headley as a backup 1B/3B possibly), and Ellsbury who I think will be gone by spring training.

Coming up fast on the rail, Warren, Betances and Chapman are all 29 and will be 30 by next April, Tanaka and Romine are 28.

This is obviously a bit in jest and there will of course be exceptions, but it's worth noting that the two guys Cashman just made a point of getting at the deadline, Gray and Kahnle, are both 27 and under contract for the next few years. Then I guess it's into the Carousel and on with the next batch:

Is there a "leader" in the under-30 set that can take the media weight?

I think Judge is maybe already that, but Gardner will probably be around through next year so guys will have some time. Greg Bird also maybe could be if he could actually play in baseball games sometime...

Didi also seems to be a pretty good team leader and his role there will probably only go up as more younger guys come in. I don't think anyone will bump him from SS for at least a few years, I think they will move Torres to 2B or 3B if Andujar doesn't work out.

Great thread idea, jon. Loved Logan's Run. Love Cashman's very coherent vision for this team even more.

Who do you guys think will go next? Is Betances the next "name" to get flipped for prospects?

Also, how much value does a veteran pitcher have on a staff beyond what they do on the mound? I'd really like to hear terry's views in particular. The Yankees, when they're good, always seem to have a couple of guys like that in the rotation or featured prominently in the bullpen.

Again, awesome thread idea.

I think Cashman will definitely market Betances and Robertson in the offseason, but it seems like teams are a lot more desperate to pay up for closer types in July than in December so he'll end up keeping the stocked bullpen going into next season, bad news for guys like Heller and Holder and Gallegos and Rumbelow.

No real idea, I think they will try the latter but I think they'd DFA him before moving him for a different bad contract. They could also try to include a fringe 40 man pitcher or two like Mitchell or Cessa in an attempt to get the other team to pick up something like 3/18.

Adam Warren turns 30 today, so NY is back to 9 guys 30 or older on the 40 man.

Of the nine guys over 30 on NY's 40 man roster, four are FAs:

Holliday (37)
CC (36)
T. Frazier (31)
Garcia (30)

Holliday and Garcia are certainly gone, CC I think they'd like back if he'll take a one year deal, and Frazier I think only if he'll take a one year deal and they can move Headley (unlikely).

These five are still under contract, Headley and Ellsbury will be moved if at all possible IMO:

Headley (33)
Gardner (33)
Ellsbury (33)
Robertson (32)
Warren (30)

Now that we're ready for an offseason thread and no longer riding a magical run. I'm not entirely sure that we want or need CC back. The man had a great final 1/3rd of a season but really is a 5 inning pitcher who taxes the bullpen. In all likelihood we give him a roster spot but I don't think he offers anything over JM outside of a veteran presence.

CC after the game was very clear that he wanted to come back to NY, I think it would be really hard for Cashman to say no to a deal for 1/10 or 1/12.

As for what he brings, he was 4-0 with a 1.04 ERA against Boston this year in four starts.

You really missed the boat not trading Ellsbury and a prospect for Verlander

Seriously, good call by you, not that we have much idea if it was actually possible. NY didn't even block Verlander being moved with a waiver claim, that might have messed up their plan to finally get under the luxury tax number this winter because there's a real chance DET would have just let him go.

Maybe the story of this postseason is New York or Boston not blocking Verlander.

Another one bites the dust with the Headley trade, only four guys left over 30 on the 40 man roster currently, Gardner is the oldest player on the team.

Gardner (33)
Ellsbury (33)
Robertson (32)
Warren (30)

Sabathia and/or Todd Frazier may still be coming back, but wow, this purge/transition has gone even quicker than I expected.

By the way, it also makes you not care so much about the age of the managers who have an average age differential of probably 13-18 years old at this point.

Sabathia is officially back, so we're back up to 5 guys over 30 on the 40 man.

Torres up and Gardner is sitting today, this has to be the youngest lineup NY has had in a long time, everyone under 30:

"The last time the Yankees didn’t have any player 30 or older in their starting lineup was on 9/29/1989. The last time the Yankees didn’t have any player 30 or older in their starting lineup in the month of April was on 4/26/1942."

Bumping this thread because it turns out that NY got more WAR from under-30 players in 2017-2018 than in any previous two year period in their history:

2017-2018: 83.2
1941-1942: 81.4
1956-1957: 75.2

There is a full chart by year in this article, good job Brian!
