Tim Wright is really really explosive in the middle of the field.  Classic seam stretcher.  Not very good with his hand in the dirt yet.

I love the Pats, but I'm not a huge football guy so correct me if I'm wrong... but wasn't the OL one of the larger concerns right now? Wow.

Wright was the 54th rated TE by PFF last season, with a -7.2 score in 626 snaps. He did rate positively (1.9) in the passing game but was truly atrocious (-10.1) in run blocking.

Hooman was #60, FWIW.

My opinion here depends on the draft pick. Mankins was clearly on the downside of his career, and while the tough SOB was reliable he had also regressed a lot from his peak and is not worth his salary at this point.

FWIW from Bedard:

What few wanted to admit was Mankins' play had slipped the past few years. This is BB selling high.

Richard Seymour Redux?

Seymour was traded on September 6th, 2009 at the time as a 5 time Pro-Bowler for a 1st round pick.

Loved Mankins, always a physical guy in the trenches and a great, great teammate. Anytime you saw some after the whistle stuff, Mankins was always right in the middle of it, no doubt defending one of his teammates. I have learned that it is dumb to criticize anything the Patriots do, because they are smarter than everybody else.

Of course this is TE depth but I wonder if it says something about Gronk too.  Could be pretty limited to start the year.

Well there is the move absolutely no one saw coming

Mankins was probably a goner next year anyways, but shocking that with interior line the perceived weakness of the team they just shipped off their most reliable piece.

Wendell/Connolly/Kline now starting?

Pretty happy they got out from the 10 million dollar a year Mankins was getting. Hoping this is a nice pick and they use the money to get Revis signed.

My thoughts:
  • Wright is a TE-in-name-only, measuring at 6'4" 229 at the Combine. He does add to the Rutgers quotient.
  • Have to think both Connolly and Wendell make the team now - I can't see them going Kline / Devey as the Gs.
  • Pats incur $8 MM in dead money for Mankins, but save $2.5 MM. He was a likely cut / restructure after the year - his 2015 cap # would have been $11 MM with just $4 MM guaranteed.

This is my take. I'd think the pick is fairly high; I don't see Wright as a guy with a lot of value.

This is selling high on a player who was trending downards in recent years and who isn't worth his contract. Let's wait and see what the pick is, but I don't expect anything high.

Wright has at least proven something in the NFL, something none of our TEs sans Gronk have done. Maybe Mankins was a bigger part of the OL's struggles than we imagined.

Here
Frees up a ton of cap space. I don't suppose there's another shoe to drop here?

Otherwise, fairly stunned, need to see the draft pick. Wright seems like a decent 2nd TE option to me, but OLine is obviously an area of concern to begin with. Maybe Kline had been outplaying him in practice.

Edit - I guess the cap space is really for the next few seasons, only 2.5 savings this year.

PFF has loved what Mankins has done in the pre-season. This scares me, he's not what he was 5 years ago but he plays with meanness.

Well this is a new one. Have to see what the pick is but if it's a 3rd rounder or higher I'm ok with this. I don't have the stats to back this up since I'm getting on a flight, but Mankins hasn't seemed the same since his ACL.

I'm hoping for something like a 3 that could bump to a 2 based on performance but I doubt it will be that high.

Evaluating preseason guard play based on an average of about 15 snaps a game. PFF at its finest.

I agree with this - he was definitely slipping.  BB always gets rid of a player too early instead of too late

Wright really can't do what Gronk does.  He should perform well as a weak side TE and in slot.  He isn't a TE1, just can't run block.

But he can run and catch.

Since its post June 1, only $4M hits the 2014 cap so the immediate cap savings this year are pretty substantial.  I don't know if there are other shoes to drop (probably not).  We may just rollover the space into next year, potentially helping with a Revis deal.

Here
I'm not really sure I understand what the Bucs are doing here either. Are they expecting to compete this season? Mankins is a guy on the downside of his career making a ton of money.

Wright is 220 lbs and as posted above not a great blocker. I think he is more of a "move" TE or just a straight pass-catching option.

Woah. I really want to react to this now, but can't without knowing the pick. Still though, everyone knows Mankins is in decline, but still pretty good and added a whole shit ton of toughness to the team.

This is weird.

Patscap has 5.75m saved this year on Mankins if traded or cut, and $7m the next two years. Significant space.

Bucs had been linked to Incognito. Can't imagine they still would be after this

Wright was struggling with drops and was 3rd on the depth chart in Tampa. The pick had better be a high one.

From upthread:

74% catch rate last season.  Better than Graham, Thomas, Davis, Gonzalez, Cameron, Gronk, Celek, etc, etc...

If he is struggling in camp, I would hope that it's fixable, since he was good last season.

Frees up a lot of '15 cap space if they just take the hit now.  Almost certainly a good move for '15 and beyond without knowing the pick, just going to suck if the interior OL submarines another season this year.

I don't understand Volin's comment, why would they have to create space?  They already had Mankins on the cap this year for north of $10MM
