Yes. Every single marketing firm that has been directing their attention to the 18-34 demographic for the last 40 years have been completely wrong. It's the COVETED 35+ demographic of men who presumable have families to take care of, are already entrenched in the brands that they chose to spend money on and have little in the way of disposable income. THAT'S who advertisers want.

Not the 25-year-old kid who has a job, more money than he/she has ever seen before and is buying tons of impulse purchases, because "Why not?"

Well it's true if you're trying to sell Buicks. Or adult diapers. Or cell phones with extra large buttons.

My favorite part is that there's no upper limit, just 35+. I'm sure their domination in the retired grandfather market with all those people on fixed incomes is what advertisers want as well.

I'm sick of Chad Finn skewing the facts in every freaking article. Why isn't he reporting the 75+ year old demographic? BEC'SE THEY DONT LISTEN 2 TOUCHER N RICH!

Why no emphasis on the retired Down Easter' Maine demographic?

I'd say Dennis is back on the sauce if that rant was a bit later in the day. If he was drunk at 9am in the morning that'd be impressive.

Is there a reason more females would watch Dennis and Callahan? Because parsing those numbers, that's the only result I can come up with. Am I missing something?

Had this on when I turned the car on and Tanguay was back! Ohhh the drama. I hope my 17 seconds of listening doesn't push them over the top.

Yeah, so much for Tanguay's "stunt"! I heard Meter was on as well instead of Minihane. (Click.)

Seriously I hope the title of this thread is still right, and these guys go away for good next year, particularly Dennis.

The title refers to when Dennis' contract is up and he has made no secret he is done when that happens. Much of the discussion around this latest stunt is who will take his place when he is gone between Tanguay or Mut.

Man I think Tanguay would actually be a downgrade from Dennis. What a dumb decision that would be.

Dennis's tweet, in light of the T&R tweet about the Demos in which they are No. 1, almost seems like a joke. As if someone got a hold of Dennis's account and tweeted "hey, we're #1 in 35+"

Mutt filling in for Dino this morning. Having to listen to Gerry and Kirk talk about play by play and how it takes zero skill to be a good PBP guy. Literally zero. Gerry said that yes, some guys are better than others, and some have better voices. But it takes no skill at all. He equated it to the guy who writes the box scores in the newspaper and asked Mutt, "does that guy have any skill to write those?"

Kirk said that when he's watching the game, he will sometimes ask his wife to tell him what's going on. She'll tell him when the ball is pitched and what happened and says that his wife is just as good as O'Brien or anybody else that does it.

Mutt tried to hold his own, but was being ganged up on. He tried to explain that it adds emotion and whatnot. Referenced Buck's "I don't believe what I just saw!" call from Gibson's HR. I can't remember if it was Gerry or Kirk, but they mostly said, "well yeah, your brain is telling you that you can't believe it, so you just say it."

Jack Buck's call.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirk_Gibson's_1988_World_Series_home_run

Jack Buck
CBS handled the national radio broadcast of the 1988 World Series, with Jack Buck providing play-by-play and Bill White as the analyst. This was Buck's call. It begins here with Buck speculating on what might happen if Gibson manages to reach base:

... then you would run for Gibson and have Sax batting. But, we have a big 3–2 pitch coming here from Eckersley. Gibson swings, and a fly ball to deep right field! This is gonna be a home run! Unbelievable! A home run for Gibson! And the Dodgers have won the game, five to four; I don't believe what I just saw!

The last sentence is often remembered and quoted by fans. Buck followed it with,

I don't believe what I just saw! Is this really happening, Bill?

Buck concluded his comments on Gibson's amazing feat with this thought:

One of the most remarkable finishes to any World Series Game...a one-handed home run by Kirk Gibson! And the Dodgers have won it...five to four; and I'm stunned, Bill. I have seen a lot of dramatic finishes in a lot of sports, but this one might top almost every other one.

So it takes zero skill to do PBP, but the difference between Curt Schilling vs Jessica Mendoza on color is a really big deal.

Glad they cleared up something I've never given a shit about.

Scully also made the Gibson call. He was on NBC tv and Buck was doing radio.
Scully's call on the Gibson HR was just as memorable as Buck's for what he didn't say, IMO. And that's what makes Scully great.

He described the HR as it flew and followed "and she is gone!" with 60 seconds of silence while Gibson circled the bases and the Dodgers celebrated at home plate. He broke the silence once the celebration hit the dugout with his most memorable line from the game: "In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened"

[Tanguay] You're a moron! [ / Tanguay] Schilling and Mendoza are color (not colored) analysts. It takes no skill to do Play by Play, but filling gaps in air and generally talking about baseball with no real insight takes real skill.

Lest anyone think this is the case, I've heard The Most Honest Man on the Radio, Kirk Minihane, give the same pathetic "Older guys are the ones who buy cars and houses!!" party line on the air.

I can only imagine what their response would be if the ratings were reversed and T&R touted the fact that they were winning one specific demo that nobody cares about.

Hmm, the Dennis explanation of demos sure sounds like the Imus explanation when he lost to D & C in the ratings. I believe D & C laughed at Imus' desperate grasp for relevance back then.

Schilling was the 3rd wheel today. It was pretty good when they stuck strictly to baseball talk. Good timing with Johnston and Flynn total snooze fest fill-in on 98.5 today.

I caught a few minutes this morning and was wondering who the third guy was. At that point it was pretty much a nonstop three-way Hillary bash-fest, which makes perfect sense now given that it was Schilling.

Just flipped on for a minute, Schilling on today. Conversation regarding Zika virus, mosquito spraying, and its effect on Eco-systems went like this(paraphrasing):

Callahan: "they say like 1,000 species goes extinct every day, but who cares? That's always happened".

Schilling: "how do they even know that, who can even track it? That's a BS stat. And besides, Mother Nature will sort it all out anyway". America is going to be so great again.

"Curt, you've got cancer. But we're confident we can treat it. Not going to kid you, the treatment will be difficult, but you'll be cancer free."
"You're one of those 'scientists,' aren't you? How do you even know that I have cancer? Spare me your BS. Mother Nature will sort it out. I'm outta here."

(searches for insurance card brought to him by strong Union; which he still has because Commie-law bars his health insurance company from dropping him (or his wife) due to their cancer history).

And FWIW---
According to the UN Environment Programme, the Earth is in the midst of a mass extinction of life. Scientists estimate that 150-200 species of plant, insect, bird and mammal become extinct every 24 hours. This is nearly 1,000 times the “natural” or “background” rate and, say many biologists, is greater than anything the world has experienced since the vanishing of the dinosaurs nearly 65m years ago.

So humans are winning. Believe me, we're winning so big............... That apparently 40% of the electorate is one big Curt Schilling fills me an existential dread I can barely describe.

Listening to Minihane's podcast from today. He had Mike Mutnansky on as "host", but it was really the two of the them talking. Kirk once again stated that he and Dennis have no off air relationship and it's uncomfortable during breaks. He spoke vaguely about why they don't get along, but it sounds like there have been incidents where he felt Dennis was trying undermine him. I don't listen to D&C anymore, so not sure if they spoke about this on air previously. Mut still stinks because he's still a generic radio guy. Nothing unique or compelling about him. Minihane was point blank telling him that's the reason why his career hasn't progressed further and it was going in one ear and out the other.

Minihane has apparently watched way too much WWE and thinks that "act" is gonna take him places in the future. He's already the third (unnamed) voice on New England's 7th (amirite @Chad Finn?) best rated morning show!

Meanwhile, Mutnansky is paying his dues as the generic radio guy doing scores, updates, and the Red Sox pre- and post-game shows.

Check back in five years when Mut still has a job in the industry and Minihane is co-hosting Curt Schilling's podcast from Schill's garage on periscope.

I don't care if Mut is still in radio in 5 years. If he wants to remain irrelevant and make shit money for that long, good for him.
You think the guy participating in Red Sox broadcasts is more irrelevant than the third wheel on the D&C show?

You think if WEEI offered them to switch gigs it would be Mut who'd say no?
I don't doubt Mut would read headlines and try to ignore Gerry's racism if he was assigned to do that by the brilliant minds who run WEEI. Is being on Red Sox broadcasts better than being ignored by John Dennis? I dunno - I suppose that depends on if your goal is to have a job in radio five years from now, or not.

Kirk may very well flame out but he is likely making more in a year as Mut will make in the next 10.
You think 3rd chair on the 7th best rated morning show in the market pays really well?

I would bet Kirk makes more, but remember that Mut's first WEEI contract was as a host, so if he's still on that deal, he's probably not making terrible money.

Regardless, I think we can all agree that WEEI would be far better off firing both Kirk and Mut and giving their money, and roles, to Christian Arcand.

He is a personality and while his name isn't on the show he has been the lead voice there for quite a while now. I guarantee you he is making a hell of a lot more money than Mut who is likely making about the same as a manager at Chili's.

Edit:I have no idea what a manager at Chili's makes but I assume it is nothing special.
Edit2:Mut has also made no secret when he has filled in on the show that he would love to have the gig full time or any full time gig for that matter.

Do you have some inside info or something?

Because WEEI was in cost-cutting mode when they hired Minihane, and it would not surprise me at all to find out he's still on an "entry-level deal." I suppose it is possible that they gave him a bump when they moved him to D&C but despite being "the lead voice" the ratings have not risen (much) and advertisers continue to abandon both the station and the show.

I'm sure Mut is making more than he was when he was at the AM station in New Hampshire. Is there a bump for being in the Red Sox orbit? I have no idea.

I have no inside info but he has stated multiple times that he makes lots of money, of course huge grains of salt are required for any such statement.
When I googled "how much money does Kirk Minehane make?" the first article was from Chad Finn(who?) about Kirk signing a multi-year deal but no money details seem to be available that I can find.
http://www.boston.com/sports/untagged/2014/01/03/weei_signs_kirk_minihane_to_multi-year_deal

I assume Mut took a step up when he went to EEI but generic sports guy doesn't pay like radio personality and now that he doesn't have a regular gig he is probably paid hourly at a pretty modest rate.

I'll stop at this point since I don't really have anything to add but ideally Chad will pop in and enlighten us.

He's not with the Astros or Rangers. The pre/post game show isn't a full time a gig (obviously doesn't work during the off-season) but you're right it doesn't go far. His wife works and they still can't afford to buy a house. And he's a fairly well know sports personality in his market. I don't think people realize how little some in the sports media world are paid.

Radio/TV is very much a pyramid. There are tons of people making almost nothing, and a few at the top in big markets making a fortune.

Yeah, it's almost like people don't get into a sports journalism career to make as much money as possible. Making tons of money is a lot easier in, say, the finance industry.
