I really don't think he's blocking anyone. I actually think a rotation of Yoshida, Duran, Duvall, Verdugo, and occasionally Ref works well, including using Masa at DH at times.Aside from the fact that Duvall has been playing, better, who is Duvall blocking?
Maybe Nick Robertson is one? He'd fit the mold of extreme release extension arms that Bloom takes flyers on.According to Alex Speier, Sox getting 2 minor league relievers in the higher levels of the LA system.

What's he blocking Duran from? A better seat on the bus? A bathroom stall?Duran

He embraced it. This isn't a case of the Sox asking him to do something he didn't want to do, or that he thought was a stretch: https://www.nbcsportsboston.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/kike-hernandez-has-bold-message-for-doubters-of-shortstop-ability/285043/I do wonder if their insistence at playing him at SS for so long messed with his head and screwed up his offensive approach too.
I dont see it. Or maybe we have different definitions of blocked. No big deal.CF
(Casas 1B, Turner DH, Yoshida LF, Verdugo RF)
View: https://twitter.com/TomCaron/status/1683951156412792833Two names I’m hearing as possibilities in the Kiké deal: Nick Robertson and Justin Hagenman.
The Boston Red Sox will receive right-handed reliever Nick Robertson -- who has thrown 10.1 big league innings this year -- and right-handed reliever Justin Hagenman (now at Triple-A) from the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Kiké Hernandez deal, sources tell ESPN.
No one thought it was that much of a stretch. Anyone who suggests they knew he'd suck at SS is using hindsight. There was no reason to think that in ST.He embraced it. I don't think it completely eliminates the potential of a Duvall trade. Reyes was playing games in CF on his rehab assignment. He could completely fill the Kike role by backing up the middle infield and spelling Duran. Also, with Story returning soon, there will again be a crunch on the bench with too many middle infielders. If Duvall is still around, that means one of Chang, Arroyo, or Reyes will have to go. With Duvall gone, all three can still fit.I wonder if this scuttles any potential Duvall deal, or rather have they decided to give Duran the CF job against lefties too.
I am not especially fussed about it, but even with the logjam, Kike seemed a better fit on the team rest of season than Arroyo given his ability to be play a very good defensive CF/RF and 2B, ideally on short half of platoon.
That’s just not true. Go read the posts in March and April. Anyone who suggests they knew he'd suck at SS is using hindsight. There was no reason to think that in ST.
All kidding aside; this is exactly how I feel. I'm sure along with Justin Turner and Kenley, Alex Cora is bumming too. It's still a business and Kike's play put him in this situation. I look forward to the video montage.Sad it came to this. I really liked Kikè. Seemed like a great teammate. Sad to see him go but yeah this is the right call. He was a liability at SS and the plate
Like I said, there was no reason to say that in March. Some people just naturally think *everything* is going to suck. Sometimes they're right. By April, he was already sucking at it. In March he played 10 games. No one had any reason to predict what happened. That’s just not true. Go read the posts in March and April
Which one of the 4?All kidding aside; this is exactly how I feel. I'm sure along with Justin Turner and Kenley, Alex Cora is bumming too. It's still a business and Kike's play put him in this situation. I look forward to the video montage.
IDK, I loved Kiké in CF but always disliked the idea of him at short. I posted all winter that it seemed like sleight of hand that they kept saying it when asked. No one thought it was that much of a stretch. Anyone who suggests they knew he'd suck at SS is using hindsight. There was no reason to think that in ST.
Anyway, good luck to him. Didn't seem like an asshole.
I'm late to the JMU party, my daughter is only a rising junior, however @RSN Diaspora might know more.Robertson hasn’t been good at Chavez but he was good in AAA
And he’s from JMU
who’s our JMU expert, @DJnVa?
People that watched the Dodgers when he was there a few years ago didBy April, he was already sucking at it. In March he played 10 games. No one had any reason to predict what happened.
Over his career, he was an average SS in 1000 innings or so.
Yeah , I would have been real happy if it was just one of these alleged twoI kinda love this trade. It's pretty small in the grand scheme of things, but we got two potentially useful pieces for a not-so-useful piece.
The game will have to start half an hour later for all the ex-Sox that will have to be remembered.Which one of the 4?
All the numbers I looked at showed him as average, not catastrophic. (in limited time)People that watched the Dodgers when he was there a few years ago did
In exchange for a player who had no role. That's what a good trade is.I don't care if the Red Sox are paying all of Kiké's salary for the rest of this season...this is a really nice trade if that reported return is true. Now maybe neither of those guys pans out, but they're both interesting enough that this could end up being a home run if either of them works out, never mind both.
I'm pretty sure there are going to be deals before the Rule 5 deadline. I'm also sure someone's gonna want a lefty reliever and would give us one or more lower level pieces next week.Adding a couple upper-minors arms, one on LAD 40-man and one who'll be Rule 5 eligible, makes me wonder if there are further moves in the works, with some of our own pitching depth (minors or majors) out the door later this week.
Why don't you link some of the posts that you're talking about so people don't need to go search for them.People that watched the Dodgers when he was there a few years ago did
Agreed. There almost has to be, right?I'm pretty sure there are going to be deals before the Rule 5 deadline. I'm also sure someone's gonna want a lefty reliever and would give us one or more lower level pieces next week.
Not sure what thread and date they’re in and “SS” isn’t searchableWhy don't you link some of the posts that you're talking about so people don't need to go search for them.
There definitely was some skepticism…. I was thinking he’d be good enough to hold the fort until Story or Beltre was healthy and thinking it’d be 6-8 weeks. Wouldn’t be “good” but also wouldn’t kill the team. Not sure what thread and date they’re in
IIRC there was some argument that Hernandez belonged in CF. . .but not much that he wouldn't be able to be a passible SS defensively. There definitely was some skepticism….
