“@Mitch_Rupert: Utley looks like he’s got some pretty pointed words for McClure, he doesn’t get fired up, but Chase looks very pissed off”

Pirates pitchers have thrown 30 straight scoreless innings, with shutouts in 5 out of the last six games, including winning 1-0 in extra innings twice over the weekend against the Phillies. Charlie Morton threw 7 strong last night, taking his record to 5-0 in five starts since returning the DL after hip surgery. He has given up only 6 earned runs in 33 1/3 innings this season. This rotation has been fantastic all season, with AJ Burnett once again flourishing under pitching coach Ray Searage, Francisco Liriano remaining steady, and Gerritt Cole making The Leap to true stud. I can't recall a tougher Pirates rotation in my lifetime, even Jeff Locke has been better than expected.

Giants signed the very old, very injured Marco Scutaro.

I don't know how to link to this, but here's Michael Hurcomb's brief write-up from CBSSports.com:

"The Giants re-signed infielder Marco Scutaro to a major-league contract Wednesday. However, he is still not expected to play baseball any time soon, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
The Giants made the goodwill gesture to sign Scutaro through the 2015 season, "matching his previously signed contract," according to the team. The Giants didn't want Scutaro's career to end with him being released in January to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Nori Aoki.
"Marco's performance in the second half of 2012, the NLCS and World Series will forever connect him to the Giants," general manager Bobby Evans said. "It was important to us and to him that he retire as a Giant."
Scutaro underwent back surgery in December and continues to rehab in Florida "in hopes of maintaining a quality of life and be pain-free with his family," the Giants said.
Scutaro was placed on the 60-day disabled list."

This is beyond classy.  The contract they matched paid him $6.6M per year.  Hard to know how much of that he will actually get paid, but wow, what a gesture!

curious -- what's with the home/away tues/weds swap basically all over baseball with everyone playing the same teams but swapping venues?

Very classy. Always liked Scutaro.
I'm still amazed he was not snapped in half, let alone was able to stay in the game after this :

Pitching porn.  King Felix vs. MadBum on MLBTV right now.
Jon Miller calling the game to the Giants.  I used to hate him on ESPN, and then heard him on these broadcasts and realized that it was entirely because of Joe Morgan.

Anyhow, he just said he thinks all of the idiots who chant "K! K! K!" everytime Felix gets to two strikes went to Duke.... and it cracked me up.

First hit off Bum in the fifth and Krukow was livid because the first hit in a no hitter is supposed to be a clean hit. The ball took a very bad bounce to Crawford, and then he threw it in the seats.

Did you hate Joe Buck because of McCarver? Actually, both were hate-worthy. Miller is always good, always in a good mood, great story teller.

Spooked by right fielder Maxwell? Not that he should have alligator armed it like he did. There are a lot worse near collisions than that and the catch is made.

Come on now, Al.  This isn't a fair comparison  :colbert:

Buck and McCarver are both awful.  Morgan was just so bad that he made it hard for me to stomach the ESPN broadcasts, even though Miller was on them.

Good stuff about Bryce Harper: http://grantland.com/the-triangle/2015-mlb-bryce-harper-offensive-surge/

We could start with Harper’s .726 slugging percentage, which, over a full season, would be the highest for a player his age (22) or younger since Ted Williams in 1941, a season that ought to ring a historical bell or two.

Harper’s 226 OPS+, meanwhile, would be the 10th-highest for a player of any age since 1901. The only 22-year-old to post an OPS+ that good was, again, Williams in 1941, and the only three names ahead of Harper on the list are Williams, Babe Ruth, and Barry Bonds — only the three greatest hitters, relative to their respective eras, ever to play the game.

He’s been 4.3 wins better than the average player, the 46th-best mark in history by a player his age or younger, and he’s got another 96 games to run up the score. He’s already halfway to the best WAA in history for a player age 22 or younger (8.6), a record held jointly by Trout in 2012 and Williams in 1941.

Pitchers duel in LA.  0-0 through 5.  Zach Greinke vs.... Anthony Ranaudo??  Although it looks like Ranaudo is pretty much out of gas after 76 pitches, as he walked Pederson on 5 pitches (all high) and went 3-0 on Puig (also all high pitches) until Puig hit a laser right at the CF on the 3-2 pitch.  Ranaudo did slip on the mound the previous inning trying to chase down a ball and twisted his ankle, which could also be a factor.

Can we trade Robbie Ross back to them for him?

Also didn't realize Ranaudo got a $2.5 million signing bonus from the Sox.  Wow..

Edit: He got pulled after 100 pitches and 6 2/3 innings leaving runners on 1st and 3rd for Ross Detwiler who has gotten bombed all year, but has turned into a decent LOOGY, who got Joc Pederson to fly out to end the threat.

Sounds like it isn't the worst news for Harper.  Hamstring strain, getting re-evaluated today.  I really, really hope it turns out to be minor, because it would be awful to lose any amount of the season he is having to an injury.

Verlander finishes at 117 pitches in his second start back. This is just stupid.  Do they really want him arm falling off now?  Ausmus is just asking for trouble.

He pitched so poorly too. What the hell?

Also, remember when everyone said the Royals the dumbest trade ever? Well, Wil Myers is on the DL AGAIN for wrist surgery. Talented kid, sucks to see him always hurt.

Chapman gets into a baseload jam and proceeds to strike out the next 3 batters in a row. Dude is filthy.

Rays lose 1-0 on a walk-off sac fly. Kiermaier threw a bullet from pretty deep center and had the tagging runner beat, but the catcher misplayed it.

Luis Valbuena has 19 home runs now, and after going 3-for-3 thus far is still under the Mendoza line

MadBum has been crushing the Pads all night, then Bochy let him hit in the bottom of the 7th even though he'd thrown 93 pitches and the Giants were up only 2-0.  First two hitters of the 8th went BB-double (WMB!), and now there are men at 2nd and 3rd with no outs.

Edit:  Home-plate ump just called out Clint Barmes on a check swing himself, Pat Murphy came out of the dugout to ask why the ump didn't ask for help from the 1st base ump, got tossed, then used a lot of filthy words.

Second edit:  Venable doubles and now it's 2-2 and MadBum is out.

Rays and Jays looked like they stayed out a little too late at Mons. Scoreless 11 innings and then Jays win 1-0 after a homer in the top of the 12th.

Lester went 4 IP 4 ER today. 17 ER in 26.2 June IP. 4.03 ERA on the year. Can't imagine the Cubs are too happy thus far. And it will only get worse as the years go by.

That said if they happen to win a title during his contract and he is a meaningful contributor, they likely won't care, kinda like us with Lackey.

If his was putting up these numbers with us the reaction would be?

Well if he had the same ERA on the Sox it would be better since it is the AL, and if he was replacing say Kelly or Miley then we'd probably have a couple more wins.

That said for $150M you expect a lot better.

Lack had a reasonable contract. You're thinking of someone like Barry Zito and the Giants.

Max Scherzer has personally outhit his opponents over his last three starts (including tonight), has a hit and run scored (on a shallow sac fly) tonight, has a 6-game hitting streak going, and is perfect through 4.
