They probably hadn't sold out that game yet.

Honestly, they should save this for some game next year when they are in last place and have sold like 18k tickets or something.

Does this mean he can't play in anymore games? This is dumb.

Actually, pretty sure that's the game they were already having a ceremony for him and tickets are already crazy pricy.

Very good/often excellent, but thanks to longevity, confused with greatness.  Can't wait for this ball washing fest to end.  #2 can't even carry water for #42.  Deal with it, Toilet Universe.

Very apt description.

They're actually going to retire the name 'Derek', so any future players with the name will have to choose a uniform number and a new first name.

Any word on the unconfirmed reports that the fistpump will also be retired?

I heard Cervelli was particularly concerned about this.

This must be part of the lingering resentment that the rest of the league won't agree to retire #2 as well, a la Gretzky and the NHL. Can't we simply acknowledge that his intangibles dwarf anything baseball has ever experienced?

We should start a petition to try and force him to wear a different number for the rest of the season. It should highlight the absurdity of this situation nicely.

It's a good thing Jeter hates attention and being in the spotlight.  Otherwise imagine how insufferable all of this would be.

Hey, don't sell him short.  I mean, he led the league in hits twice, and JAWS has him ranked as the 12th best SS to ever play the game.

Twelfth!  That's only 2 outside the top 10!

Why should we be nice to him? He's been getting his proverbial dick sucked in public for 20+ years now. People have always been nice to him, whether it's not asking him to move positions for a superior player, or getting more than his fair share of credit for his team's success, or having such pesky things like putting up a .438 OPS in a WS his team lost or a .567 OPS in an ALCS his team lost or a .353 OPS in an ALDS his team lost get curiously overlooked.

He's a great, great player, but beyond accurate description at this point. No one, and I mean no one, has been more Teflon than this fucking guy. And just wait until the fucking media decides that Jeter, not Mays or Maddux or Koufax or Aaron, is gonna be the first guy to go into the Hall unanimously.

Hold the phone:

The Yankees on Wednesday night denied a report that said they would be retiring Derek Jeter’s number on Sunday when the team honors him at the Stadium.

Minutes after Newsday reported on its website that Jeter’s No. 2 would be retired during the pre-game ceremony before the Yanks take on the Royals, Yankees Director of Media Relations Jason Zillo told the Daily News “the report is completely inaccurate.”

I heard they are making teams wear patches honoring Jeter. Patches of his SKIN. That seems a bit much but I guess that is the only way you catch intangibles?

They're talking about waiving the 5 year waiting period for Jetes*

They will retire his #2 on Sunday, then each day for the rest of the season they will give him a new number and then retire that number too. Replica jerseys with Jeter's name on the back along with each number will be on sale.

It's about time that someone is FINALLY giving Derek Jeter some recognition and respect. He is bigger than the game, that's why everyone loves him. Tip your hat to him right now or else you are a classless loser who is just JEALOUS!

So that fans can remember him as he is today, the Yankees will place the statue of Jeter precisely between second and third.

Good thought. I have a bear and salmon statue in much the same pose

I'm really hoping for a massive 'Deeeeerrreeekkkk' chant for his last game. One last goodbye from Fenway.

They're doing this on the first Sunday of the NFL season? I guess they couldn't sell tickets. Maybe they can get Simms or Bavaro or LT to boost interest.

aren't number retirement ceremonies sorta big deals like something you'd want to announce in advance?

so if it's not a number retirement thing, then what's the point of this exactly? they'll play some videos and allow muggles to purchase intangibles?

The thing I would love is a five infielder shift, one of the outfielders positioned between 3B and the mound to get his 45 foot toppers to the left side.

I've teased CI a lot in the past two-decades, mostly good-natured stuff, mostly, and mostly about the cult-like worship he seems to attract. But putting aside cogent observations about the most over-rated SS in baseball history, today is his I'm luckiest man in the world day I'm gonna sell a gazillion $ of crap" at the house that Steiny extorted NYC to build.

He deserves this day. And its beautiful here in the NYC metro-area. Here's to a 1-for-4 day, an inside out single to right, a Jeterian throw from the hole, and maybe just one pasta diving Jeter, to keep it in perspective.

And Nomar was the better hitter.

Nothing speaks to the difference between the Boss's Yankees and Hal's Yankees more than the money-grabbing events that keep getting created year after year, dating back to the biggest money grab of them all -- the new stadium. It's embarrassing to see these Jeter patches, the No. 2 flags waving over the stadium, and whatever other horseshit they cooked up to rob the fans of even more money.

Good thing it's football season.
