Might as well start the thread

No headphone jack? Waterproof? Dual camera? No home button?

Thinner? Lighter? Longer charge? Faster re-charge? Larger storage tiers? EarPods? Lightning or wireless? If so, Bluetooth or proprietary?

Still on my 5s, never got around to a 6. Looking to switch carriers and upgrade. Wait for 7, or get good deal on a 6?

Not sure about size but I would guess if its thinner/lighter it will be minimal.
From what I have seen, Yes to larger storage tiers and earpods will connect via lightning port and include a 3.5mm adapter.

edit: pretty good breakdown at The Verge as to what to expect

I wonder what they are going to charge for a Lightning to 3.5mm aux adapter. I'll guess $35.

Apple dragging their feet but finally upgrading storage because of the camera, at least a generation too late.

Probably thinner but not something that's needed.

Oh....it will be thinner. Thinner is the most important feature to each and every iPhone customer. Even if it means sacrificing battery life.[/sarcasm]

This phone IMO will be the least popular in Apple's history. They're going to alienate a ton of people by nixing the headphone input. There really is nothi else new to differentiate it from the 6S, except a little faster she a little better camera.

More storage is good but like already mentioned at least a generation too late.

We've removed the headphone jack, and you're going to love it!!!

BTW if you aren't following @JonyIveParody you're missing out.

Seriously though, I thought it hit most expectations, there really weren't any secrets that we didn't know about. Extra battery life is nice, I really don't care too much about the camera. Nice we get the adapter for headphones in the box. I was 100% wrong about them keeping the jack back when the other thread stated

I'm up in Feb and I'll grab a iPhone 7 then. I'm debating on getting an Apple Watch finally.

$159 for AirPods?? HAHAHAHA

Not necessarily. Adapters come with every purchase. It's the wave of technology. Not to be tethered. Just like a mobile phone freed you from the wall many years ago. Progress. They'll sell a ton of these phones as usual.

If you buy the new phone you'll get a free adapter regardless. If you're not you won't worry about it anyway.

I'm at a crossroads so I'm considering this, but I wish I was more excited about the phone.

Here's my situation. I've damaged the charging port of my iphone 6+. I can barely get it to charge, but if I leave it in a certain position with the cord wrapped around it with tension, it charges. I took it to Bestbuy and they told me under the plan I could exchange it for a refurbed phone and pay my deductible.

So replacement phone will cost $199. End up with a 6+.
  • I can pay $70 to upgrade early. Have to turn in a working phone, so $199 + $70. End up with a 6+.
  • I can pay $280 to upgrade without turning in my current phone. So iphone 7 for $280 plus the new phone charge on my bill.
  • I could upgrade to something else, like GN7 pay the $280.
  • Is there any place that fixes charging ports. Geek squad didn't and felt the only option was to get the replacement, but they get the deductible that way so they may be steering me in that direction. I've got an old phone I could activate if I'm without my phone for a week or so.
  • Or any option someone here may have.

Thanks in advance.

My major complaint: they didn't include something to chain lightning devices together.

I use my car charger and my headset (for conference calls) in my car all the time, probably 2-3 hours a day. I hope they release something that I can charge and use the headset. I really don't have a desire for another device to charge in wireless headphones.

I'm not sure in your location, but there's a lot of places around. You can just do iResq as well:

$69

Personally I'd do that rather than go to a new phone.

It seems kind of bizarre to remove the jack for space considerations and going for thinner, then still have the bulge for the camera.. why not use that space for a bigger battery if the case still needs to be a certain width for the camera?

I'll definitey take that bet, $100 to JF.

They're going to alienate a ton of people by [integrating the monitor/removing the floppy drive/charging $500 for an mp3 player/removing the CD-ROM drive/nixing the headphone input].
Nah, Apple will be just fine on this.

$159 for AirPods?? HAHAHAHA
This is completely in line with market. Check out prices on Jaybirds, etc.

It's funny i see this narrative everywhere for everything Apple does, except most Apple Fans don't say any of that stuff. It's just Android people posting it ahead of anyone saying it and mocking other for saying it (even though most Apple people don't)

This was 100% true like 5 years ago, but I don't see it really at all anymore.

I love my Jaybird wireless headphones. Great sound and the the Bluetooth gives me about 30 feet freedom. Like everything else, these have substantially improved over time.

I know you posted this before the event, but what would you have liked to make it that much better? In this form factor you can only pack in so much stuff at this point. I think the 7 is a decent upgrade. It's a lot faster, much better camera, more battery life, stereo speakers, water-resistant and some other smaller stuff. I'm not sure what else people are looking for at this point.

I have to think they'll solve for this and announce something soon as there are too many instances where power and access to audiojack or lightning is required where BlueTooth isn't a great option. Beyond the folks driving around taking calls and business travelers that want to charge their phone while listening to music on a plane there are major restaurants and retailers that use the devices as a kiosk that require constant power and a card reader.

More BlueTooth peripherals address some of these concerns, but there are support complexities that high volume users won't put up with.

I have a 5, which I got not long after it was released in 2012. I am very much looking forward to the 7. I'd prefer to not have the camera that sticks out and I'm a little apprehensive about losing the headphone jack but overall I think this looks great.

Anyone have any insight as to when on the 9th you can pre-order? Is it likely to be Midnight eastern time? Midnight pacific?

Yeah, the higher storage options are a generation behind but its not like that will impact the sales for this generation. Really strange that there is no 64gb option though. That's the sweet spot for a lot of people.
I don't disagree that this will probably be the least successful rollout of a flagship iPhone that we've seen. Mostly because I think as far as hardware goes we are seeing the ceiling for bells and whistles and people are holding on to their older phones a generation longer. It's all about improving the spec sheet at this point. This is not unique to Apple.

Regarding the headphones, I don't think it will be as devastating as a lot of people are making it out to be but I still haven't heard a good argument as to how removing it benefits the consumer. The dongle isn't really a good solution. The lightning connector just isn't as strong as a headphone jack and I can see the weight of the 3.5mm plug pulling that thing out simply walking with it. Also, 3rd party lightning connectors suck, even for charging. At least the OEM dongle is only $9 bucks.

The camera sticks out on the 6 and 6s as well. If you put even a slim cover on it negates the lip.

They'll solve for this with the $35 adapter I mentioned earlier.

It's odd that they did not allow for charging with this adapter when they have in the past with various video adapters.

Totally agree, but they probably wanted to cushion the blow by saying you can still use the headphones you love for $9. Then later come out with and if you want to charge the device and use your headphones then that'll be $35. $50 if you want to charge and connect another lightning device.

I'm just glad I no longer work for an entity with a crap ton of devices in stock with highly emotional/reactionary business analysts. Though instead I work for a company that hasn't updated their mobile app in 3 years, has no iOS developers in house and is already getting inquiries.

They can conquer that when they remove the audio jack from the iPad, no place using an iPhone for a square reader is doing high enough volume that they can't just swap it in and out when they run a card.

Edit: or more likely, they leave it up to the company providing the swipe unit...if a place can't use it, they will find a new service before they find a new device.

That "courage" line really chapped the ass of tech bloggers.
Guys in their mom and dad's basement? It's marketing. Apple knew there would be some blowback of course but the technology is here to move away from being "tied to the device". Some people are never happy, get used to it or stick with your older devices and headphones. You have choices.

Well, it was a pretty stupid line. I say this as someone buying this phone, and barring terrible reviews, the Airpods as well.
The AirPods has me just a tad more curious. The current iPhone/Pod buds suck at staying in your ear if your moving around much hence you switch to another makers workout headphones that stay in your ear. As seen in the Keynote, other headphone company have already synced up with this such as Beats.

I love the current EarPods. I despised the old version. i've had a few different headphones that are in-ear. I've never had an issue with them falling out. I use them for work, running, etc.

What does "up in Feb" mean? None of the major carriers are offering a subsidized phone any more they're just willing to spread out the payments over 24 months. Why not just go out and buy the phone unless you think the price will drop by February?

One thing I would note -- lightning ports behave like crap when there is a lot of lint/fuzz/dirt jammed in them. When this is a problem -- if you wiggle the charger, you can usually make a connection, but have to apply some sort of force to keep it there.

I have been able to fix similar issues on multiple phones by straightening out a small paper clip and using it as a pick to gently pry out crud that has gotten wedged in the Lightning port. Worth a shot.

If you need to charge and drive, I am thinking Apple is assuming a lot of drivers use their car's speakerphone, so you can charge and talk on the phone at the same time while driving if you have that.

If you don't, you're SOL unless you get BlueTooth headphones.

Free phone from work every 20 months. Full price upgrade before then.
