Iphone 5 Update Problem

Attempting to update an Iphone 5 to the recent iOS 7.1 and the new update won't download.  16 gig AT&T.

I've moved all pics and videos to my cloud and deleted them from my phone. I've disabled all unnecessary apps and even deleted all location services apps to ensure I have enough space for the update. Essentially the phone is only using 3.2 gigs of space.  The download still won't work.

So, I did a hard restore and still nothing.

Ideas?

I'd try backing up, then doing a clean install and restoring data from the backup.

Are you able to download the iPhone software before it is used to update the phone? Assuming the answer is yes, how far are you getting before you have the failure (ie: what's the error message you see on the MacBook Pro?). The other thing is to make sure iTunes is up to date before updating the iPhone.

Those touch sensors are terrible. Never thought they'd be a good idea.

TouchID is freaking awesome. I can't imagine going back to a phone without it. It gives reasonable good security and makes unlocking extremely convenient and quick.

If it isn't working after the update then try deleting and retraining fingers. if it still is broken then just take it in to an apple store and get it fixed or replaced if it really is toast. If you have a 5S, then it's still under a year old and covered by warranty.

Nope.  The error message from the phone says there was an error downloading IOS 7.1.

iTunes is up to date.

I backed everything up, erased everything and then tried the update before restoring my data and that still doesn't work.

The same error message displays after every try: "Problem downloading iOS 7.1"

Based on the error message, I think the issue might be with the network connection. Is your MacBook connecting via Wi-Fi? If so, can you try connecting to your router with an Ethernet cable instead? Or, try a different Wi-Fi network if possible. By the way, what kind of connection speeds are you getting and who is your ISP? Have you successfully updated this iPhone on this same network and MacBook?

Another possibility is internet security software on your Mac is hindering your downloads from Apple. But this doesn't explain why you're having the same issue when trying to update directly on the iPhone.

Are you connected to a home network or in a corporate environment? Workplaces often block connections they deem inappropriate. Can you connect to the iTunes Store on the MacBook?

Lastly, you can also try downloading iOS 7.1 directly from Apple using Firefox or Chrome on your Mac instead of with iTunes. You can google "direct iOS 7.1 download" for the link specific to your device. If the download succeeds then you can update your iPhone using the downloaded file by holding the "option" key on the keyboard while clicking "check for update" on iTunes.

I apologize for all the questions, but it helps in isolating the issue.

This is a most likely a network issue, before we switched ISPs I couldn't update at home either. Try to download it directly from the modem (plug computer into modem, bypass router) and try that way. If you're still SOL, go somewhere else and update.

Ok, your next step should be to download the .ipsw file on your computer and then hold the option key while clicking "Restore iPhone..." which will let you choose the file you downloaded.

Update-

I installed and rebooted ios 7.1 3 times.  Touch ID- dead.  Brought my phone to the apple store and they swapped it out for a new one.  The ID was working perfectly before I installed the new hardware.  Good luck.

MacBook is connecting via wi-fi. I also added the cable and the download didn't work either. I have no idea how to check connection speeds.  I use Century Link bundled through DirectTV.

The phone I was trying to update is my GF. I updated my 5 at home and it took less than 2 minutes to download and update without using the Mac.

Home network. I connect to iTunes from the Mac at home with no issue.

The issue appears to be resolved as a PC was used this morning at her office and the download and installation was successful.

I'm now wondering if there is a home network connection speed problem that arose after I updated my iphone.

My FaceTime totally stopped working and I had to install iOS 7 to get it to function again. Weird. Happened simultaneously on iPad and another family iPhone, with same result of upgrade to new iOS being required to fix it.
