Can't you just cut a new patellar tendon out of someone else and put it in Mayo's knee? What do we pay you for around here?
$10 sure doesn't go as far as it used to.

DRS, this may make a for a decent follow-up Central article, but I'm curious on the physiology of how tendons and ligaments heal compared to bones.  It seems most tendon and ligament injuries are a 6-12 month heal time while bones can be as little as a few weeks.  Are there any theoretical processes for speeding up the recovery time if we know why they take so long to heal?  In other words, is it possible 10, 20, 50 years from now new methods or technologies will allow humans to recover from these injuries quicker?

That's a great question, what was Alvin Mack's injury? Torn ACL, broken leg?

Alex Mack, the Browns center, has a broken leg.

Alvin Mack, a key linebacker on the fictional college team at ESU, suffered a career-ending knee injury in the movie "The Program"

We have a pretty good understanding of why one takes much longer than the other to heal (short answer: they're completely different tissues in completely different environments) and there's a ton of research trying to address it, but it'll be a while.

Waiting on the All-22, but the Ridley injury appears to be the result of a cut back gone terribly wrong. The blocking at the LOS is not the main issue. If this was an inside zone run then I believe there is a mistake by Vollmer on his zone block read (he's uncovered and instead of helping Kline block Kyle Williams, he immediately goes to the second level defender). If it was a simple drive block scheme then Vollmer is coached to ignore the double-team block and go straight to his man - in this case, the linebacker. This appears to be a man blocking scheme since there are no double/combo blocks as you would expect when there are uncovered offensive linemen.

Ridley makes the decision to cut outside (to the wide side of the field) very quickly. LaFell doesn't get a hand on Gilmore, who makes the devastating tackle on Ridley, but LaFell is clearly trying to gain inside leverage on Gilmore for an eventual block forcing him to the outside. Everything about the blocking is set up as a run between the tackles (you can sort of see the "parting of the sea" developing in the middle with o-linemen with their backs to the running lane and the defenders facing the running lane). Once Ridley cuts to the outside of the tackle, Gilmore blows past LaFell and Ridley's season comes to an end.

Ridley has three choices here and, unfortunately, he chooses the worst option. I think he sees the green of the field on that side and makes his cut instead of reading the leverage of his blockers and taking what is there, which is probably a minimal gain up the middle. LaFell doesn't get a free pass because he fails to engage Gilmore at any point but, as you can see in the screen above, Ridley should be reading the block of Solder who is angling the defender to the outside. Ridley either misjudges Gilmore's closing speed, which was pretty exceptional on the play as he comes from 10 yards off the line of scrimmage to meet Ridley two yards behind it, and/or expects LaFell to angle him off.

No one practiced today, but you have to list those who would have missed "if you had practice".
Uncle Bill must have woke up in a crabby mood to not fully take advantage of this opportunity. Oh the possibilities.

Here is a link to Alvin's greatest hits, including the injury:  Mack

I only linked it because it's pretty unsafe for work. Or at least watch it with the sound off...but then you miss the wisdom of Mack.

This offseason I'm totally writing a review of The Program for Football Central. And The Replacements.

Mack actually transfers after Coach Winters gives up on him and ends up starting at middle linebacker for Notre Dame in Rudy.

No, he transfers to Ramsey College where he quits the football team and announces he'll "focus on more scholarly pursuits".

Poor Brian Doyle-Murray.

Ironically, I was actually booking a guy for a patellar tendon repair as I got the tweet about this injury.  Maybe I'll live-blog his surgery on Tuesday for the website, or wear a GoPro and film the whole thing...

Poor Brian Doyle-Murray.
You're both wrong. He actually moved to WR to revive the once proud Texas State Armadillos after their death sentence from the NCAA.

That was his brother, Featherstone Mack.

The 'Dillos had a terrific kicker.

I'd say Robert Loggia's brilliant halftime speech had a little to do with it as well, but the kicker was the most attractive asset.
