Waiting on the All-22, but the Ridley injury appears to be the result of a cut back gone terribly wrong. The blocking at the LOS is not the main issue. If this was an inside zone run then I believe there is a mistake by Vollmer on his zone block read (he's uncovered and instead of helping Kline block Kyle Williams, he immediately goes to the second level defender). If it was a simple drive block scheme then Vollmer is coached to ignore the double-team block and go straight to his man - in this case, the linebacker. This appears to be a man blocking scheme since there are no double/combo blocks as you would expect when there are uncovered offensive linemen.
Ridley makes the decision to cut outside (to the wide side of the field) very quickly. LaFell doesn't get a hand on Gilmore, who makes the devastating tackle on Ridley, but LaFell is clearly trying to gain inside leverage on Gilmore for an eventual block forcing him to the outside. Everything about the blocking is set up as a run between the tackles (you can sort of see the "parting of the sea" developing in the middle with o-linemen with their backs to the running lane and the defenders facing the running lane). Once Ridley cuts to the outside of the tackle, Gilmore blows past LaFell and Ridley's season comes to an end.
Ridley has three choices here and, unfortunately, he chooses the worst option. I think he sees the green of the field on that side and makes his cut instead of reading the leverage of his blockers and taking what is there, which is probably a minimal gain up the middle. LaFell doesn't get a free pass because he fails to engage Gilmore at any point but, as you can see in the screen above, Ridley should be reading the block of Solder who is angling the defender to the outside. Ridley either misjudges Gilmore's closing speed, which was pretty exceptional on the play as he comes from 10 yards off the line of scrimmage to meet Ridley two yards behind it, and/or expects LaFell to angle him off.
