https://www.bostonglobe.com/2020/07/17/sports/red-sox-must-play-into-september-this-season-reset-luxury-tax-2021/?outputType=amp"In order for the team’s luxury tax rates to “reset” for the 2021 season — something that would remove one disincentive to pursuing free agents in the offseason and spending beyond next season’s 2021 luxury tax threshold of $210 million — the season must be played beyond the Aug. 31 trade deadline."

"FWIW: Teams can reset their luxury tax penalties/rates if the season is played to its conclusion. If there's a shutdown and season can't be finished, luxury tax penalties/rates will revert to 2019 status."

Alex in today's Globe:

Aug. 31 this year possesses two-fold significance. It’s the date of this year’s trade deadline, with a somewhat muted and late-developing market likely in a season where there are questions whether the season will be played to its completion. The date also represents the point where — if the season is still being played — the team will be assured of resetting its luxury tax rates for the coming seasons.

Is it too soon to start counting down the days, Magic Number style? Today is 25 days and tomorrow's a good one if we're looking at uni #s.

So, what actually has to happen? Red Sox finish an official game? Throw a pitch out? Any team plays?

This is the most exciting thing this year so I just want to know when is the official time on Monday to get to.

My guess is that as soon as any team (not just BOS) throws a pitch in September, the tax number is reset, and there can be much rejoicing.

So what's the celebration? To fit with the theme, we all take a tax bill out of our desks, shred it then throw it in the air like confetti?

I think flushing it down the toilet might be more appropriate this year. As would the toilet then overflowing.

OK, it's 6:40 eastern which means that it really finally is three days precisely. (Thank you for your kindness in overlooking my failure which was not only a failure of rounding, but indeed a failure of being able to count to the number four while looking at a calendar.)

So we commonly refer to the players who win championships as one of the 25 or somesuch.

But with roster rules and various players getting moved today it's very hard to actually tell who was on the roster during the great tax rest of 2020 at exactly 4 pm today. How will we commemorate them in future years?

Similar to "The Punto Trade," I would imagine.

Also, "One of the 25" refers exclusively to 2004.

I'm not totally confident there will be future years.

stolen from reddit (where it was probably stolen from somewhere else)

I was going to write a snarky 'Can't wait for the NESN video!' response, but to be honest, a one-hour video of Chaim and the Gang of Four doing their job would be infinitely more entertaining than the supposed 'baseball' this team has been playing.
