Of course they were true.

The guy laughing at all the naive fools too ignorant to see that John Lackey hated being here.

Maybe it wasn't about Lackey just being a misunderstood asshole and general malcontent. But if not, it was clearly about Lackey being pissed at the club for low-balling his buddy Lester and then having the audacity to expect him to pitch for a half-million bucks (and on what he saw as a rebuilding last-place team) without Lester around.

Really?
So the 4/70 M not only is the reason Lester is gone, but Lackey as well.
It is probably also responsible for the sucktitude of Bucholz and why Doubront asked to be traded.

Lackey gave STL management assurance he would play in '15, but in BOS? "I don't know about that,'' he said. "I didn't get that far ahead.''

(1 of 2) Lackey on being dealt: " "Pretty excited, actually. I wasn't real surprised. Honestly, this is as good a place for me (cont).'

Sean McAdam ‏@Sean_McAdam  6m
(2 of 2) ."me to be right now, so I was pretty happy with where it happened, I guess. You could see it kind of heading in that direction.''

Seems like those reports that he wanted out of BOS were true
And on queue, CHB chimes in:

@Dan_Shaughnessy: You could feel John Lackey's hatred for the "Boston Baseball Experience,'' in his reluctant session with Hub media today. Free at last
I'm sure the way he was treated in Boston his first three seasons stung, but I'm not sure those quotes really say he wanted out of Boston so much as he likes STL as a landing spot. And there is a difference between assurances with the team you are already under contract with about the future and the team who is giving up assets to acquire you.

That tweet from Shaughnessy is a hoot. It's like an arsonist deriding a retiring firefighter for no longer having the courage to run into burning buildings.

Precisely. That this is all shocking news to anyone is shocking in itself.

There's good reason why Lackey wasn't surprised he was dealt. He avoided answering the 500k question all year which was a major league tell aside from understanding how the business works.

Uh huh. I think the way the deal worked was that we took Craig (and his moderate extension, which was making STL nervous given his recent performance) to get (five years of) Joe Kelly. Fewer years of an established veteran pitcher for more years of a young guy is a pretty standard trade format.

Craig could be a total wash, or a really useful piece at a bargain price, depending on how his foot injury works out. STL would prefer we assume that risk, given that they have Adams and Taveras.

All that in exchange for a season and change of Lackey.
Don't forget the season of Lackey @ $???

Just wanted to +1 this. I was just writing it in the Craig thread, and I think it helps make sense of why the team took Craig despite their risk averse negotiating stance in long-term contracts.

Getting Kelley for Lackey is a really good swap for the Sox.

A good friend of mine for some 30 years, a Cardinals' fan who works for himself and goes to a great many games--spring training, AFL, minors and majors--says of Craig that, "He is injury prone and a liability on the field (especially OF)." I tend to place some weight on his observations.

Not that I disagree, but these are just about the two most obvious and non-controversial statements about Craig anyone could possibly make. You don't need an insider or Cardinals expert to know that.

If Craig hits, he'll be a useful piece. If he doesn't, he's a liability because he isn't good defensively, he isn't that cheap, and he is often hurt.

Not so much the "Boston *Baseball* Experience" as the "Boston *Globe* Experience."

Yes, I wish I could remember who it was, but I heard a beat writer back in late May or June talking about how much Lackey loves pitching in Boston in this atmosphere. It was presented as a "Believe it or not, he really likes playing here."

I'm just glad that Kelly is apparently going to take Peavy's place in the almost vacant "Pitcher with an incredibly easy name to spell that half the board somehow gets wrong" slot.
