Maddison's ball was so good it gave Romero a concussion and know he's off.

Worried about a Spurs defense with a CB pairing of Sanchez and a Mickey making his debut. Udogie also making his debut, and the debuting keeper has already had some nervy moments.

Looked like a soft one there. Contact, yeah, but not a whole lot. Mbeumo places it into the bottom left corner 1-1.

edit: props to the Sky Tv announcer for using the phrase 'shenanigans in the penalty area.'

11 minutes? I’m all for attempting to curb time wasting this seems excessive.
It just shows how absolutely ridiculous implementation of VAR is.

It’s 11 minutes because they had to look at every frame to try and find a penalty that wasn’t called live. If it’s not clear and obvious just play.

Quite the strike from a player I once labeled as "the least technically skilled Brazilian in the world."

Bissouma looks really good and active but scoreline aside Spurs look a man or two short of options in attack. Have managed 2 but finding it very hard to create much in open play attack.

Agree. Son and Richarlson don’t have the right movements yet.

I’d be interested to see Son central with Solomon out on the wing.

Maddison looks good though.

Calling that a penalty on VAR after not calling live is crazy soft. Like, we’ve lost any idea of what VAR was supposed to be.
If you give refs video, they will just try to be NFL-style pedants no matter how many times you underline “clear and obvious” in the rule book.

Maddison is playing very well I agree. A much more natural attacking player.

Brighton are a hard nut to crack and very comfortable sitting deep. The hard thing about playing 4231 against their shape is it can leave you with 2 free fullbacks and both midfielders deeper than their entire XI which leaves you attacking 6 on 10. Then the wide players get doubled and have to recycle and all you can do is play 1 touch stuff in traffic centrally. This is essentially what has driven Pep and some others to be trying to move more fullbacks into midfield or even now CBs so more players can be moved forward to occupy more of the defenders who are sitting so tight.

Long story short I think if Spurs want to play Bissouma they need to sub Skipp for a more attacking player to get forward. Skipp did step into the attacking line a bit toward end of half but I just don’t think he carries the threat necessary

Given the current state of the market £40M for Maddison is a damned good bit of business. He's a perfect Ange-ball signing. I can see him being the beating heart of this Spurs side for the next few years. It's gonna take a few games for Son and Richarlison to get up to speed with the new way of playing, but when they do, once they start to link up with Maddison, Spurs might have something.

Paqueta went for more than double that, which just seems completely insane.

Apparently John Henry & FSG brass are at Stamford Bridge today. Maybe Henry & Boehly can arm wrestle for Caicedo, would make as much sense as anything they’ve done so far.

Look like Mac back in at the 6 & Gakpo as one of the 10s. Poch is smart as hell, even if hamstring by squad composition and injuries today. Chelsea will have some specific tests to throw at the Reds.

Liverpool: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Mac Allister; Szoboszlai, Gakpo; Salah, Jota, Diaz.

I’ll take that as a Spurs fan. They’ll gain more understanding of what to do offensively and there are a lot of teams in this league whose M.O. is “Brentford, but not nearly as good at it”.

What a build up. What a pass from Mo. No idea how he saw that. What a finish from Diaz

Great run from Diaz, too, to get inside 2 defenders.

Just so glad they didn’t concede first to start the season. New year, new Pool!

That was a beautiful sequence. Who made the initial pass to Salah? Was that McAllister?

This is why I would like to hear the conversation between the on-field referee and VAR. If the referee said "no foul, Son got the ball," it is clear and obvious error, and VAR should get involved. If the referee said "no contact from Son, Brentford player just fell down," same thing. But if the referee said "more of a coming together, not enough for a penalty for me," it's a judgment call with no clear and obvious error, and VAR should stay out.

English and international rugby does an excellent job of this, and their system works so much better as a result..

That was a tough one. He almost scored for Liverpool by handling it. I won’t complain if that consistentry isn’t a penalty all year but guessing that one goes back and forth.

Gakpo needs to come out and Jones on.

Anthony Taylor in mid season form. Ball hits him, doesn’t stop play. Trent lays on the ball so we pause and whistle it a foul 15 seconds later.
