There's a giant scrapheap of guys that were brought into Fenway who were supposed to abuse the Wall. It just hasn't worked out very often.

Lowell, Mike
Mueller, Bill
Beltre, Adrian

Worked out pretty well for those guys. Adrian Gonzalez abused the wall in 2012 as well.

"Millar, Kevin" should probably also be added there.

THAT has value. we need an acronym for that.
If we set Manny as the template 1.000 bat-flipper, I'd already put Cespedes at a Bat Flipping Expertise of about .900. And there's still plenty of time for him to improve on .900 BFE going forward .

What would Miami want with an impending FA making $11M next year?  They're going to want a bunch of cost-controlled guys, a few of which having All Star upside, as they always do.
Because he's Cuban, duh.

Cespedes went to a teammate about not wanting to play CF, not Melvin. Leaving manager in uncomfortable position. #athletics

Cespedes huge loss for #athletics, didn't help his status when he said he didn't want to play center field when he was needed there.

Only negative I've seen/heard about Cespedes. He seems like a quiet guy, really opposite type from Puig. His comment about not wanting to play CF was probably made to a Spanish speaking teammate because he was uncomfortable going to the boss. JMO.

About his English, quietness, and a funny story: I was 10 feet from him after he won the HR derby last year. Selig had just presented him the trophy and gave him the keys to the truck that was parked on 2nd base. Cespedes looked puzzled by the keys. During the break, Pedro Gomez explained to him in Spanish that he had won the truck. He was like "whaaaat?" Seemed to know zero English, and his manner was very low-key in general. But then there's the bat flip above. I like the guy.

He didn't know about Tiant or Canseco growing up. The question was whether he knew about the Sox' history with Cuban born players.

Seemed a little surprised to be asked by McAdam (I think) about playing RF and in particular RF in Fenway.  I'm guessing the Sox or his agent didn't clear up the details.  I hope that doesn't mean he won't be uncomfortable with it.

Here's hoping he and Ortiz really hit it off, and both help Bogaerts loosen up from inside the now-with-more-Latin clubhouse.

Joe Kelly better have kept practicing his salsa dancing.

Yes, it should give Bogaerts a great opportunity to brush up on his Spanish and celebrate his Latin heritage.

Well, at least he shouldn't have to translate for Ortiz.  You know, like he used to do for Spanish-as-a-primary-language teammates in the minors.

Seriously, Bogaerts' habit of tightening up with RISP has been ongoing since the beginning of the season.  Some braggadocio returning to the sad-sack clubhouse can't hurt.

I'm looking forward to both Cespedes and Kelly for that reason, among others.

A's fans I've talked to are really on the fence about the trade. They're worried about their offense (last night didn't help). Some people asked me if Lester is really that good. Ah, yuh. They definitely need another bat. Don't see Lester yet. Usually see him warming up on the first base side; will be third now here.

From Silva at Boston.com:

More on Cespedes:

Susan Slusser and Demian Bulwa of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote a terrific piece on Cespedes and his family's struggle to reach the United States after defecting from Cuba.

Also, check out this YouTube video from 2011 entitled "Yoenis Cespedes The Showcace" to see the new Red Sox left fielder working out and playing for the national Cuban team. Cespedes’ handlers released the workout video when he was trying to land a job with a major league club.

My favorite part is watching him jump onto a 45-inch stack of steps at the 6:49 mark.

Can't you make the argument with the RS current Outfield situation including
JBJ - great defensively, hoping to be adequate offensively
Nava - considered as platoon or depth only
Betts - learning on the job
Victorino - over/under on games played/2015 at about 80
Craig - we'll see which version the RS traded for: 2013 or 2014.
Holt - who can play anywhere

and a lineup including offensive weakness at C, 3B and SS currently

that Cespedes has more or just as much value to the RS than just about any team. Now if they are 10 games out on 7/31/15, and Cespedes gives no indication of signing an extension then trading him makes sense.

Maybe two of the runs could have been prevented if he was more familiar with the wall. The other six....

Remember how we were told Cespedes was going to play right field? Hasn't happened yet

This isn't making any sense. Perhaps, Cespedes through his agent, has expressed a desire to remain in LF?

I'm fairly confident that Cespedes would already be playing RF regularly if Allen Craig were healthy.  But since that's not the case, I don't see any harm in leaving him in his comfort zone in left while he learns one of the tougher right fields in the game.  We're not in a position where we have to force things to happen quickly.

Aren't they playing in St. Louis tonight?

3, with tonight's lineup
Because that 1 game makes a difference.

My point was that just because they see him as hopefully a RF long term doesn't mean he is going to play RF every night. It seems likely they want him to settle into the lineup and with Craig hurt whoever else plays will be capable of playing RF.
When they said Cespedes would play RF at least part of that was an assumption that Craig would also be in the OF which meant playing LF.

Cute response, but Craig's still on the DL & Cespedes has still never played an inning of RF in MLB.  I'm having difficulty understanding how this issue is the least bit controversial.  Or even why it matters.

He was a right fielder in Cuba before coming to the U.S. The Red Sox went out of their way to say he'd be playing right field. Even with Craig on the DL, Nava could play LF and Cespedes in right.

It's curious

Bradford with a decent Cespedes piece today

I have to say I like the guy, OBP issues or no:

Listen to his explanation when asked about hitting the home run off of Angels reliever Joe Smith:

"I've been facing him for a long time, since he was back in Cleveland," Cespedes said of Smith. "Ever since then, he's been starting me off with a sinker and then follows it up with a slider. When I saw the first sinker, I knew he was coming in with a slider, or I thought he was, so I was able to capitalize on it."

Not all that out of the ordinary, but I like a guy who goes to the plate with a plan, for sure.

It would be better, though, if he would keep such specific knowledge of a pitcher to himself.

I get what you're saying, but I think Smith has probably realized Cespedes was onto him.

I think people want to see his cannon put to use in the field that can most benefit from it (like on throws to third when runners are trying to go from first to third). He's also faster than any outfielder they would use in a corner OF position, possible exception being Victorino, and RF at Fenway is huge compared with left.

That was an absolute rocket off his bat, and carried farther than I thought when they showed a slow-motion replay.  It short-hopped the back wall in CF.

What is 'Laser Show' in Spanish?
