I agree.  That's why I said "if that's what they're doing..." because over the last couple of weeks or so some people have been speculating that he wouldn't be fired now because of his illness.  My only point was that if that's the reason for bringing him back, I don't see why the same argument wouldn't apply if someone wanted to fire him in May.  Personally I think he should be judged based on his performance and not manage the team next year.

It's different, though, to fire him when he's on medical leave--even if you were planning to fire him before you found out he was ill. Maybe that's irrational, but it seems intuitively obvious to me.

Hey, firing the guy with cancer would have had its upsides. It certainly would have drawn some attention away from the way they messed up the whole Orsillo thing.
