“@ChrisCotillo: Someone close to Dan Haren tells me ”there’s no way he’d want to play in Miami“. Has threatened to retire if traded. #Marlins #Dodgers”

So the Dodgers find a way to get him off their books and get Heaney.  That's some cold-blooded, but solid, GM'ing right there.

Solid trade on both sides I think, especially if Gordon's breakout lasts.

Haren has an extra $1m clause in his contract for being traded.

Be interesting to see how this plays out. With the Lester interest you kinda have to figure LA (along with SF) would be in the mix for Max.

Wow. Interesting, ahem, series of names there. Good luck to all MLB broadcasters if Mr. Hernandez makes the show.

He's already played in the majors.  Pronounced "Kee-kee"

He just got traded to the Marlins too. Poor kid, he wasn't bad when he was playing for the Astros

“@TBrownYahoo: In course of Rollins conversations, Dodgers and Phillies also discussed Chase Utley, according to source. Now Dodgers have traded their 2B.”

The Dodgers have Alex Guerrero chilling in AAA earning 7 million annually. They have a 2B.

Hmm, you have to figure they plan on using Guerrero, right?

MIA definitely overpaid, but I hardly think it's an embarrassing or awful deal for them. They got a cheap, young 2B, which they needed. And they got a free Dan Haren - LAD is paying full freight. If he really threatens to retire, they can shop him to SD or LAA and add to their take. Or they can offer him another year on his deal to get him to play for them and consider it salary for this year, then shop him again next year. It;s not like MIA would have been better off getting one year of Kendrick for Heaney.

It's being reported that Miami gets paid $10m for Haren's salary whether or not he retires. So presumably they hope he retires and they can use the $10m on something else. Essentially, Friedman found a creative way to add cash to sweeten a deal without having to take on an albatross contract.

Yeah, I don't hate it either. Let's see Heany actually do something on the major league level first before we slam Miami.

My evaluation of the trade was based on the fact that I really don't think much of Dee Gordon.

That was a good, well reasoned argument. You didn't change my opinion on Gordon but I'm willing to admit that you shifted my opinion on the deal a fair bit. I still think guys like Keke Hernandez have a fair amount of value, but they're also probably not key. I'd argue that's is probably still an overpay, since even in his "breakout" season Gordon had a 101 wRC+ but you're right, it's not embarrassing.

For the record, it would actually be pronounced "Kee-keh". In order for it to be pronounced "Kee-kee", it would have to be spelled Kiki.

Having caught a few games at Minute Maid this past summer, yep - it's "Kee-kay."

Heaney flipped to Angels for Kendrick.  Dodgers also picked up Jimmy Rollins for two "young" pitchers that haven't been named as far as I can tell.

Perhaps all of the Dodgers trades should be lumped into one thread since they are kind of interrelated?
