Northeastern came out guns blazing last night, scoring 3 in the first, including a power play score from freshman Kevin Roy. Merrimack mounted a comeback, though, with an impressive effort in the 2nd and 3rd periods. Ultimately, NU came out on top when senior Robbie Vrolyk netted an empty netter with about a minute or so to go. Lots of good, lots of bad, but certainly something to be encouraged by for Husky fans.

Michigan split their series with RIT. The Wolverines lost last night 5-4 in OT after holding a 3-0 lead in the first period. They won 7-2 tonight as 7 different goal scorers lit the Yost lamp. Rutledge started the first game and was shaky. Racine started tonight and was more assured. It's going to be interesting to track the goaltenders as they try to establish themselves as Red's go to guy. Stud freshman defenseman, Jacob Trouba, had goals in both games.

BC opens up their title defense tomorrow at Matthews Arena. Surprisingly, they're 2-4 at Matthews since 2008. Should be a good game - outside of the first round of last year's Beanpot, BC and NU have played quite a few one-goal games in a row. I've mildly optimistic the Huskies could pull off the upset, but I'm in no way expecting a win here.

NU's next game is at Chestnut Hill next weekend, so those two points they got from Merrimack on Wednesday are even more important.

Biggest concern with BC is on the back end. They lost a lot if talent and leadership. Thankfully Milner is 10x the goalie of Muse so we likely won't have to suffer through OT games with Harvard as they pick apart high glove.

Offense should be very solid. Didn't lose that much and got some good guys coming in. We'll probably lose tomorrow and struggle a bit through the first part of the season but the team should be gearing up for a 2 seed come April. Death. Taxes. BC Hockey success. And if someone can inset a GIF of Gaudreau's (sp?) goal, you will win 200 points. Though I will say BU certainly has us on the celly front. Mods just don't compare to drunk nude trying to go bar down and relieving some stress in the penalty box.

A nice 4-1 win over the Huskies with goals from Shea, Gracel, Guzzo, and Rowe.
Record breaking (for a home opener) crowd of 7,123 (4,200 students). Great atmosphere; UMass really dominated play. Even though it's an hour and half away for me, my son and I had a blast and we'll definately hit a handful of games this year. Big one next Friday vs BC.

HUSKIES WIN!

3-1 win for Northeastern, with goals from freshmen Ryan Belonger, Kevin Roy, and Colton Saucerman. The Saucerman goal was launched from behind the blue line, directly in front of BC's bench. Not one of Milner's finest moments... Kevin Roy continued to dazzle with another goal and several other near misses (there seemed to be quite a few shots off the post in general). It feels like every time he's on the ice he does something amazing. Chris Rawlings was excellent tonight as well, though it'd be nice to see fewer rebounds.

As well as NU played tonight, BC was very clearly not at their best. We'll see how it shakes out further down the road, but for now... first place :)

Terriers may have found a star in Cason Hohmann. After a quiet freshman year (apart from the game-winner v. BC), the MI native tallied 3 points tonight in the 4-2 home opener win v. Providence.

Feels like Merrill's absence has already cost the Wolverines a win. Having both Merrill and Trouba in the lineup would help mask young goaltending issues.

Hard to make any conclusions based on Providence. Sorry but they are pretty much the dregs of Hockey East.
I don't think you're giving Providence enough credit here. In Nate Leaman's first year as coach the team improved by 6 wins and got to the HE Semis. They are only going to get better, especially with this recruiting class they have - including former-NU recruit Jon Gillies (who's going to be a stud in goal) and Mark Janikowski (21st overall in the draft last spring).

They're a young, inexperienced team, but they're going to be good, and soon.

Michigan defeats Bentley 6-3 with Guptill and Treais notching two goals apiece. Racine stopped 22 in net, suggesting he might have a step on Rutledge to be our top goaltender. The Wolverines' next series is against The Dynasty at Yost next weekend.

BC wins 3-0 over NU.

Wasn't expecting a win, especially on a banner night for BC... but this was gross from NU. This looked like last year's team. There were very few, if any, things to feel positive about on the NU side. Just an ugly, ugly game.

As is life in HE, things just get tougher for the Huskies, with a home and home against a good-looking 3-0 UNH squad next weekend. I'm hoping for a split, but that's an enormous task if they look anything like they played tonight.

Quinnipiac ties Ohio State 1-1 on Friday night and beats them 3-1 on Saturday. Now 3-1-1 on the season.

Saw first QU game of year, the 3-1 win. Fought off a 5 minute major, even scored SH goal. Empty netter to lock it up. And o
It was skate with the Bobcats night (kids can skate on ice after game, meet with players). A nice night, a solid win despite one player from its starting line missing game.

I got tickets to the Clarkson and Brown's this year. Can't wait to go back down.

Big weekend in Hockey East, full slate of conference games. I'll, of course, be focused on the home and home NU has against UNH. Should be an entertaining series - UNH looks like the usual perennial powerhouse we've come to expect while NU looks to rebound from their first loss of the season.

Dartmouth and Yale officially tied 2-2 in game 1 of the Ivy Showcase. Dartmouth won the shootout which will advance them to play the winner of Princeton/Brown (tonight, 7 pm) tomorrow.

Michigan defeats The Dynasty 4-2 to take the first game of the two game series at Yost. AJ Treais notched two more goals. Mike Chiasson scored his first career goal, and Alex Guptill added the fourth. Steve Racine has really established himself as the first choice goaltender right now.

This Quinnipiac team pisses me off. How do you lose 2-1 at home to AIC? This team falls asleep way too often during the season and to me that reflects from head coach Rand Pecknold who just can't seem to get this team over the hump.

Been out of this thread for a couple of weeks after a frustrating weekend against Merrimack, so the response is a bit late... but well played. Probably should have written out their full name, the University of No Hardware.

Speaking of teams with no hardware! The Huskies have managed 1 point in their past five games and are slowly looking more and more like the frustrating, inconsistent, under-performing team from last year. This weekend against Alabama-Huntsville will be a good opportunity to start from scratch and get some consistency going. I think it speaks volumes that I and several friends are thinking split this weekend.

More decommitting fun over on Huntington:

Northeastern freshman forward Cam Darcy will leave the hockey program and join the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the USHL, according to a source.
Darcy had decommitted when Cronin left, but recommitted to Madigan shortly after that. For those keeping score at home, that's Gaudreau, Haar, Gillies, and Darcy now in the past year and a half. Yikes.

Tough start to the Wolverines' season after another loss tonight. 4-6-1 overall and 2-5-1-1 in the CCHA. It's certainly not panic time yet, but this has to be one of the worst starts for UM in a looong time.

Yep. 1-1 in the third period on your home ice in both games, and they can't close it out. A stupid mistake by a senior leads to the go ahead goal tonight. Man, I don't know what to say. This is pretty much the winter that hockey hates me with the lockout and this terrible start to the season. Red hasn't mentioned when Merrill is going to return. I hope it's sometime soon. We have some players (Treais, Bennett, Trouba) who are enjoying individual success, but obviously, the important thing at Michigan has and always will be about the team's success. Neither goalie has really distinguished himself as the de facto starter...

...I don't think we're even on the pairwise grid at the moment.

I went to see Providence stomp Northeastern tonight (6-2). Jankowski looked good. He's skinny and still a long term work in progress, but for someone who just turned 18 this fall he looked really good. Once he fills out that tall frame and gains some experience, he could be really good. Calgary may have been on to something...

For the first time all season, Maine has gone 2 games without a loss. After winning at UMass-Lowell last weekend, they tied UMass-Amherst at home 2-2 last night. Talk about depressing...

The Black Bears are 2-9-1 on the year, with both wins and 4 of their losses by a single goal (including Notre Dame on neutral ice). They're also still winless at Alfond (0-5-1). When they return to the ice two weeks hence, 9 of their next 11 games will be against sub-.500 teams, The calls for Tim Whitehead's dismissal are growing louder.

If anyone wants to see a comically bad hockey team, look at Northeastern right now. Chris Rawlings has likely lost the starting job in goal, the defense can't figure out how to clear the puck, and the offense can't figure out how to put the puck in the net. Kevin Roy is pretty much the lone bright spot at this point. Fantastic stat I saw this morning: Huskies are 3-14-1 on the road in HE under Jim Madigan (2 against Vermont, 1 against Providence, all last year).

Hard to believe this is the only team BC has lost to in their past 30ish games.

Yea, I don't really even know what to say anymore... they could have had a crazy good team here... Oleksiak, Haar, Gaudreau, Bitetto, Darcy, Gillies, Qualier, and Reid could have all been on this team right now.

Meanwhile, in actuality, NU keeps getting embarrassed. Except for Alabama-Huntsville, they don't have a win since the first week of the season.

This is a fast sinking ship, and I don't think Madigan is going to be the one to save it. I wish Cronin hadn't left.

Great weekend for Yale in Colorado, with two overtime victories over #2 Denver and Colorado College. A similar success in Colorado two years ago heralded a team that could compete on the national level - this year's team has been somewhat inconsistent so far (a terrible lose to Clarkson a couple of weeks ago, for example), but maybe this is a sign of things to come?

Hey Jack, maybe try to instill some discipline. 2 goal leads late on the 3rd isn't the worst time for penalties, but c'mon.

Good crowd at BC @ Agganis, as expected, seemed like a 5th goal was scored, EN, being there and heading up the stairs, but looking by boxscores, maybe disallowed for offsides or something.

First win against #1 team for BU since January 26, 2006 (also v. BC - at Conte)

Goalie Matt O'Connor, FR, looked really polished and confident for BU. BC seemed a little flat on an abundance of chances.

KKK came out smokin and carried much of the play, a lot of cheesie calls by the zebras both ways. the wrap around softie Milner gave up to make it 3-1 was a killer in hindsight

we'll get'em tonight at home

great watching with the NBC varsity Emrick and McGuire doing the game, and McGuire had a good point when he said that Bc was gettin a little too cute with the passes. This has been a problem for years, just shoot the fuckin puck

We won in a shootout, but who cares at this point. If they're going to split or worse, what's the point of posting updates? We have some serious leadership problem with this to the point where we leave one of our best players at home for this trip. It's troubling.

If UM continues to struggle, do we start hearing thw "has the game passed Red by?" talk? I know that seems harsh, but Michigan SHOULD be a contender every year. The school's proximity to the US development team along with its many other selling points (Yost, the helmets, big school, etc) are tough to overlook, and it does seem like the program is slipping a bit. I realize they have made the tourney and even made a run two years back (fortunate to get by North Dakota that year), but they were also sort of lucky to stumble onto Hunwick and it's not quite the NHL pipeline it was in the past.

I don't think so. I think that a major reason for this year's struggles is a result of not being able to keep goaltender commits. We're starting two freshmen and they're going to have growing pains. It also doesn't help that our best defenseman has been out with a neck injury for almost all of the season. I don't know what to say about the leadership problems or whatever. We have several NHL draft picks. The talent is there. The talent is not performing.

I'm sure we'll find out what's going on, but I think that it's too early to say the game has passed Red by. We were in the National Championship game two years ago. Red isn't Gene Chizik. I think.
