Steve Ballmer, the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, has turned down a $60 million-a-year offer for local TV rights and is forging ahead with a plan to start his own over-the-top streaming network, The Post has learned.
If he follows through on the plan, Ballmer, the former CEO of Microsoft, would be the first owner of a major US sports team to deliver games direct-to-consumer via a Web-based service and not through traditional cable or satellite companies, sources said.

You should have made the subject line longer and added something like "in the last 20 years".

I will bet you a million dollars they are not the first major US pro sports team to not be shown on TV.

Correct me if I'm wrong (which is the most unnecessary phrase ever to write on SOSH) but to name one team, I believe that the 1903 Red Sox did not have many of their games shown on TV, unless Channel 38 showed a few on Friday nights.

The 2000 Montreal Expos didn't have an English language TV contract. Their games weren't shown on English language TV. 2000 is pretty much modern.

I'd suggest going with something like "Clippers to switch broadcasts from TV to internet only?"

PS you owe me a million dollars money.

Thanks!

For anyone reading after the edit, the original thread title was something like "The Los Angeles Clippers may possibly become the first major US pro sports team ever of alltimes to not have their games shown regularly on television. No, really, sincerely that is the subject of this article that is linked in the tweet that is posted inside this thread!"

I guess in retrospect the original title was more interesting, if less accurate. But at least I got a million dollars money.

I'll throw down a million on this being a pure leverage play by Ballmer.  He knows Fox has also recently lost the Lakers and Dodgers deals to Time Warner and will overpay to retain the Clippers.  He's the perfect man to pull off this bluff with his background.......I'll bet he gets close to $100m if not more out of Fox.

Until internet live is truly as "live" as in as live as the television feed (and not a good minute behind due to the limitations of HLS), I really hope this kind of a thing doesn't happen.

agreed - fans will not like this and are not ready for it. People want to watch sports on the big tv they have in the living room, not on a laptop. Not enough TVs have a easy way to access the internet to make that possible yet.

Good move by Ballmer. I bet that the occasional buffering and the slight graininess of the picture will only add to the excitement of watching Clippers' games.

We should talk to the resident Chicago Blackhawks fans about how they watched their team's home games in the late 1990s-mid 2000s.
