It again depends on what is meant by excluding 2001-2004.  If its Brady with his regular season stats the same but not getting a ring from '01-'04, he's likely in..  If its Brady starting his career in '05 as a second year quarterback (like he started his actual career) and three years younger, then he's likely to end up in.  If its Brady sitting on the bench until '05 and then playing, he's got some work to do.
Disagree with the last sentence. If he's a no-ring guy and he's going to make it on regular season performance alone, his non-counting stats all look a lot better if you chop out 01-04. He's going to be higher in career passer rating, y/a, completion %, etc. And he still has two MVPs. He's getting in on that record too.

His counting stats are good, not great, if you go from '05 on and Peter King and company are voting.  He'd have to play a couple more years and get those up.

EDIT: as is, completely agree, he gets in on regular season numbers.

Also, legacy wise, I have Manning slightly better than Brady and both as top five all time QBs and wont be changing my views based on the results of one game.

I am curious where some of you would have Marino.  He threw 48 touchdowns in 1984 (the closest guy had 32) and followed that up with 44 two years later.  Of course, no rings.

Id have him and Montana as the other clear cut top five.  I also only go since the merger, I have no idea how to compare modern QBs with like Johnny Unitas and Otto Graham, its almost a different game.

On Vereen:  as good as he is on screens, he's miserable in catching the ball 15-20 yards down the left sideline.  Yesterday, he again missed a wide open throw.  I've seen 4 balls thrown to him there during the season and 3 bounced off his hands.  From yesterday, he oddly had his inside hand in front of his outside hand and the ball deflected off that inside hand.

It's too bad because the play seems to be there once a game.  Wonder if McDaniels takes it out of the game plan - I'd doubt it - but unless he's killing it in practice, I'd have to think he'd be reluctant to call it.
Tanier had a good breakdown of a successful one (against Cleveland) and why the Pats need this play:
http://miketanier.sportsonearthblog.com/championship-week-diagrams-patriots-key-play/

Vereen's one of the best big-play options we have with Gronk out and the X receiver spot unsettled.

Dobson being back, and Thompkins I assume practicing and ready to go, for this game would be pretty big. Otherwise I think DRC and Champ can matchup up pretty well on Amendola and Edelman. Would be great to have that third and fourth weapon to use against Chris Harris' backups.

I don't believe Thompkins is allowed to practice until at least Friday, per concussions rules, unless the NFL is ignoring it on this front in the playoffs as they have on other concussion-related procedures.

You're right, though I'm not sure if he ever was officially diagnosed with a concussion, and I'm surprised no one would have mentioned if he wasn't there.

I don't think this is a rule. Wendell had a concussion week 5 but was in practice (limited) all week leading up to week 6. Several guys have missed Wednesday and returned to practice (again, limited) on Thursday. I think they have to get cleared prior to returning to practice, and again before playing in a game, but as far as I know there are no hard-and-fast rules around timeframe.

Also, at this point in the season, I don't think they're doing any more full pads practices. I don't know whether that's a factor or not - can Thompkins practice and participate only in non-contact drills?

For starters, Brady has not won in the postseason with as much consistency as he did at the beginning of his career (2001-2004). More importantly, his performances in conference championship and Super Bowls since '04 have been average at best, with a losing record to go along with it (2-4). Five of his eight playoff wins since the teams last Super Bowl have been in the divisional round, as have the majority of his best games statistically.

So, essentially, this "crappy playoff" Brady is Peyton Manning?

BB should still bring out a 300 foot tape measure and a willing coach and pull a Coach Dale from Hoosiers:

"Dante, how long is this field?"
"100 Yards Coach"
"And how wide?"
"53.3 Coach"

Because your right this IS a young team that will be traveling for its first playoff game on the ROAD since the 2011 SB.  They need to be prepared and calm and ready to play.

Kenbrell Thompkins did indeed suffer a concussion Saturday. He was limited today.

https://twitter.com/jeffphowe/status/423562415377117184

Patriots confirm that QB Tom Brady did not practice today due to illness.
Limited: Punter Ryan Allen (shoulder); WR Kenbrell Thompkins (hip/concussion), WR Aaron Dobson (foot).
New addition to injury report: LB Dont'a Hightower, limited with ankle injury.
Removed from report: Steve Gregory (finger, knee), Devin McCourty (concussion) and Will Svitek (ankle).

There was some measure of revenge in the fact that those douchebags (I liked Elway and TD) choked in the divisional round against the 9-7 Jags whom the Patriots subsequently defeated on their way to the Super Bowl.

Of course they did win the SB the next two seasons.

Weather is going to be absolutely zero factor Sunday.  Sunny and highs might get into the low 60s (game starts at 1 pm local time).

Early Super Bowl lines, for the curious

Denver -1 vs FG pick em vs Sea
Sea -2.5 vs. NE SF -1.5 vs NE

Betting market views these four teams as pretty close to even.
I'm actually pretty surprised by this and would take either AFC team over Seattle, and think the SF line should probably be more like -3.5

I don't remember anything about that game. But I just looked it up and -- yuck-- the Patriots totaled 17 rushing yards for the game

I assume you're betting heavily on SF then?

I think Seattle should be favored over anyone personally. I'm surprised Denver is giving points.

I don't know, I think Seattle might have peaked early, whereas SF has gotten all of their guys that were injured back. On a neutral field, I think SF should be favored over anyone. That 12th man though in Seattle...

That and Percy Harvin... Harvin makes that offense much scarier if anywhere close to healthy.

FWIW, this is more or less exactly what weighted DVOA is for. It gives significantly more weight to recent games, and still has Seattle way ahead.

Yep.  This is why the Pats offense now has a higher DVOA than the Broncos.

Interesting that the lines are basically the same regardless of opponent.  I think NE matches up better with SEA and DEN matches up better with SF.
SF weakness is deep passing whereas that is SEA strength.

The oddball factor is the outdoor venue. With their running game and tendency to play well in the cold, I think the best case scenario for the Pats if they make it to the superbowl is some really shitty weather, preferably a major snowstorm. The uncertainty as to the game time conditions might be why the early lines are where they are.

Yes but they won't play in the snow. The game gets rescheduled if it storms.

This is not true.

Standing between a mountain of snow and MetLife Stadium on Wednesday, NFL senior vice president of events Frank Supovitz was confident that Super Bowl XLVIII would go on as planned.
"Let it snow," Supovitz said.
The league has contingency plans that could move the game up to Saturday or delay it until Monday night, but Supovitz said those plans exist for every Super Bowl. And with the first outdoor Super Bowl planned for a cold-weather venue slated to kick off at 6:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, Feb. 2, Supovitz almost sounded like he was rooting for the white stuff.
"I think watching NFL football in the snow is really romantic," Supovitz said. "It's great, it's exciting, and if you've ever done it, you know that. It's also a rite of passage for you as a fan to have done it at least once. And this is a Super Bowl, right? So I think it's going to be amazing. I think it would be better if it snowed a little bit during the game. I think it'll just make it more memorable."

"There's so many questions about the weather," Kelly said. "We want to make sure that the national audience certainly knows this region has tremendous assets and resources and knows how to get this done.

"It's nothing more than reassuring people that, despite the fact that the world's greatest is going to be here, we still know how to clear snow. We keep the markets open every day and the schools open most days, and we'll do a good job Super Bowl week as well."
After New York/New Jersey Super Bowl host committee CEO Al Kelly detailed the reason for Wednesday's news conference, a MetLife crew demonstrated the Aero, a machine that can melt 600 tons of snow an hour.

Commissioner Joe Mrozek said the NJ DOT has access to 821 snow trucks and plows and 60,000 tons of salt within a 30-mile radius.

http://espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/story/_/id/10158176/nfl-vp-frank-supovitz-metlife-super-bowl-let-snow?src=mobile

The way I read it, it would take a really severe weather event to move this game.

Pretty sure.  The article you posted seems fairly sensational to me.  It reads like they're just trying to get a headline and some attention.  There's too much at stake for the NFL.  They thought this one through.  Barring a huge weather event this game is happening on Sunday 2/2.  They go out of their way to stress their weather clearing capabilities in the article I posted.

It sounds like reading those two articles, they're gonna play in the snow unless it's a "public safety" concern - i.e. a serious blizzard.

Yeah, I think it would take a major blizzard to postpone the game. Rescheduling the game is a logistical nightmare, 4-6 inches of snow or whatever is not going to get the game rescheduled

This is going to be a logistical clusterfuck as it is.  The NFL is not rescheduling this game, barring a full-on blizzard/state of emergency.

EDIT - Beaten to the punch.
