Daz has never been a defensive whiz. He was an O line coach and moved up the coaching ranks on the O side of the ball.
That said, I didn’t see the game yesterday but did listen to it on my iPhone as I had a bunch of things to do. Looks Ike the refs didn’t help at all but I look at the fact that they had 4 turnovers in their favor, that should have resulted in points (I guess there was a blocked punt that was returned but that didn’t turn up in turnover stat) and did not capitalize on the turnovers . They had only 1 3rd down conversion? That’s real bad. Those stats tell me the obvious, the offense was a non factor for most of the game. Time of possession was in favor of NC State (41:30 -18:30). Hard to win when your O is on the bench for 2/3 of the game.
With Dillon out, the pressure was on Brown. Looks like he had a pretty bad first half and an ok second but it was too little too late.
They have good athletes. Kudos for fighting back and winning the second half. But they are now 1-2 against P5 competition and their victory against Wake (3-3 now) is looking more meh with each passing week. (Clemson put 63 on the Deacons yesterday). Their other wins are against 1-5 Holy Cross, a 2-5 UMass, and 3-3 Temple. Bottom line they have not beaten anybody of substance. Combined victorious opponent’s record is 9-16. They are Too inconsistent with a coach who continues to lose his mind on the sidelines.
I see at best a 7-5 record and in my mind that is not enough to extend him. I think we have gotten all we are gonna get out of Daz as a head coach. He upgraded the talent, the facilities are vastly improved but the program is mired in mediocrity as a whole. Better than Spaz but that is a pretty low bar. They are starting a $150M capital campaign. I can’t see Daz as the guy you want out there leading the major revenue sport over the next 5 years posting 7-5/6-6 records and expecting to reach your campaign goals. We’ll see what next weekend brings.
