I agree, Rudy, but plenty of teams are carrying worse guys in their pens (likely including the Sox). He isn't sexy or promising, but he should be useful somewhere in the majors.

Vavaro has torn flexor tendon in his pitching arm; about to go under surgery; out for the season.

No idea whether the Sox had suspicions about his health when they DFA'd him but explains his ineffectiveness.

Interesting that the article said that Red Sox has accepted responsibility for his medical bills despite the Cubs having claimed him and Vavaro clearing waivers when the Cubs DFA'd him. Apparently, this will give the Sox a ability to offer him a contract in November.

So this pretty much means we never DFAD him

Paying the medical bills seems like a no brainer if it gives them the option to see what he has next spring.

“The tendon is partially torn off the bone, but the elbow is stable otherwise,” the 30-year-old told Gordon. “I was worried I might need another Tommy John surgery. That’s not the case. This is the best possible outcome.”

Rehabilitation is expected to last six months, so Varvaro could resume throwing in November. The Red Sox say they were unaware of how severe the injury was, so both clubs agreed that it “would be appropriate to return Varvaro to the Red Sox for placement on the disabled list in accordance with the major league rules.”

According to reports he's been placed on the 15 Day DL.  Why not just put on the 60 day?  He's out for the year, even if you don't need the 40 man spot right now, you're only putting off an inevitability.

however, a team's 40-man roster must be full in order for the option of a placement on the 60-day disabled list to be available.[1]

Apparently it is a paper thing. They will have to fill out the 40 before they can shift him, but it will never make a practical difference
