Up 3-0 you have that luxury. Plus if the rookie is on your roster, then you have faith in him, and you're not conceding. He's you best fresh arm.

My theory is you give them less hope if you have all your weapons at full strength for 5 and later.

Certainly must have been part of the thought process. I'm just hesitant to gift another runner into scoring position with a great hitter due up.
